"Wait.. Roswaal touched him in the bath!" is a crazy sentence without context lol. Also great reaction!

"A single 'thank you' is worth more than a million 'sorry's" has been one of the most valuable lessons for my daily life that I've seen in media, and I don't think I've seen it anywhere presented so clearly. I always rolled my eyes at people who were apologizing for no apparent reason, to the point where it seemed like verbal self-flagellation, but I remember how watching this episode made me reconsider the times I say sorry. I used to apologize anytime I'd cause someone even a small inconvenience because I believed it to be the polite thing to do (and, to be fair, because I legitimately felt bad) without ever considering that simply showing appreciation for someone's time and effort may be the correct way to go about it. It's a small mental shift, but it feels so much better for all parties involved. Also, good job on being suspicious of the puppy from early on. While we're at it, I'll give you another free fulfilled prediction (on what I'm gonna say): Romania, the scene where his head is on her lap, bawling his eyes out, is the most beautiful scene in the entire series, I don't know why you would have any issues with it :D

Carthaphylus

About that lap pillow scene, the uneasiness is understandable, and I suppose you're being hypervigilant about these sorts of tropes appearing in stories. My reaction to the scene was also uneasy, but for totally different reasons. Unlike you, I binged the first season, and once I reached this scene it felt more like a moment of peace for Subaru after all the tribulations of the past episodes. Although it's hella weird to be so... 'open' i guess... after in retrospect, from Emilia's perspetive, just 2 days in the mansion. My paranoia came from how easily Emilia seemed to read Subaru, which made me assume she had to somehow know about the restarts. But then again, why wasn't he allowed to say it to Emilia before? On the other hand, this time he was a lot more vague, and maybe she just thought Subaru was exhausted after the loot house and then waking up in an unfamiliar place. I don't know. (I'm mostly presenting it how I perceived it in the moment while I was watching the series myself, so as to keep things spoiler free.) Now, some notes about the things that rubbed you the wrong way about the scene. I suppose the main question is whether, from a writing perspective, the lap pillow was necessary as opposed to just a conversation, to which I would say it's mostly unnecessary, with some caveats. In a literal sense, it puts Subaru in a more "vulnerable" position, one in which he could more freely express his sadness and despair. Subaru saying evasively, how if Emilia keeps doing this, he might fall in love with her, feels more like Subaru trying to hide his frustrations with both light-heartedness and juvenile romanticism, which he seems to do a lot in general, one could even call it a defense mechanism. And this highlights something intresting. Subaru literally asked for a lap pillow, but the second he gets it, he doesn't revel in it, if anything he is being defensive and evasive until he can't anymore. Emilia shows a lot of emotional maturity in the way she treats Subaru here. She is firm, almost ordering him to basically sit down and shut up for a second, but also empathetic. She might not know the details of why Subaru is suffering, but she knows he is suffering nonetheless, and that he is bottling up these emotions for some reason. (One could say this is one of the toxic masculine traits Subaru is showcasing, although it gets a bit murky given that he is literally not allowed to say why, which could metaphorically represent the feeling of having to bottle things up, where trying to express your emotions is like "a shadow hand crushing your chest" if you will.) To which I'll leave one of my favourite quotes: "There are few things more terrifying than one's own heart, and there is almost nothing more terrifying than sharing it with another, but the most terrifying thing of all is to leave one's heart unshared." On a final note i would say it's good you feel uneasy about the scene and that you are analyzing it so much. It means you care about how the show will play out and how the characters will develop. Keep that uneassiness for it might make the future episodes more rewarding.

renna

What an episode once again... i really liked the transition where Subaru shows a huge fake self-confidence, while on the side showing that he feels sick. Very good imo. And this episode shows once again why Emilia is amazing bcs from her perspective, it doesn't make any sense why he's so completely at his wit's end, but once she realizes it, she still acts and tries to help him without judging him at all, she just letting him go and rest. Just like the fact that she asks him for a "thank you" and no need to apologize 50 times. She's a real sweetheart. And i love this scene even more by knowing that it was so important for Subaru to just let go, he NEEDED that. He's been under so much tension ever since arriving in this world, where he's definitely not used to handling this much stress all at once. This anime always handles dialogue so well. Perhaps your awkwardness about this scene is bcs you're "afraid" (that's not rly the word but you get it) that Emilia only serves as Subaru's emotional support, and that her character will only exist for him rather than as an independent character. Regarding "toxic masculinity", the issue is how it's used, and that's a shame, when there are simply toxic ppl that shouldn't be labeled as toxic femininity/masculinity. And these kinds of studies are dogmatic, driven by an ideological bias. Subaru wasn't toxic, it was a reaction to Betty's bitterness instead of "bcs it's a girl so he said that".

That Guy

I watched this when season 1 first came out, and I never forgot that phrase. I have repeated it a hundred times, and implement it almost every day.

Sascha

I understand your wariness now that you've explained; it would suck if Emilia turned out to be just some passive character there to comfort the MC when he needs it. But your reaction to the lap pillow initially seemed so odd to me since we had totally different headcanons behind her actions. When I first saw this scene, I thought she was acting maternally because of the loot house incident, seeing him as a boy traumatized and nervous about expressing it. I never thought of the stuff in the mansion being important to anyone other than Subaru.

That Guy

The first time I watched the Lap scene, I really, really struggled with it. I like it a lot now on a rewatch, but that's because I love the characters so much after almost 4 seasons of anime and as a new webnovel reader as well. I think almost all of your discomfort at Subaru's, and some of the actions of the girls too, is 1000% valid, and even teenage me cringed a bunch at these behaviours when the anime came out (I was raised right, I guess?) If I were to give the author the benefit of the doubt, I would say that Emilia often displays a strange combination of Aloofness and naivete (I hesitate to call it this because I think the actual naivete is only a fraction), which leads to her sometimes having strange boundaries when she "shouldn't" and having no boundaries when she "should". This leads to her being super open in a strange way sometimes. Also, I found your discussion at the beginning over "toxic masculinity" to be surprisingly reasonable. I think the term has become a buzzword, but it's important to me that you emphasized the "toxic" adjective of that, because it specifically separates a subset of behaviours that are a combination of biology and social conditioning that are definitely toxic, from the total umbrella of what are "masculine" energy behaviours, a lot of which are super awesome and healthy when channeled correctly and for good things.

Reuben Filimaua

All I can say is, you don't need to worry about character writing quality. Despite the tropes being here and there throughout the story, the author still manages to give equal love to everyone in terms of providing depth and agency.

We can never thank the mods enough (that goes for all your channels) - so yes - super, super thanks to the mods! 👏 We appreciate having you to keep us all in check, thank you! The idea you bring up of Emilia possibly acting unknowingly to herself at times is so JJK isn't it? She needs to stop eating those Witch Finger cookies Ram and Rem keep making her! Hahaha! Last thing we need is Sukuna to isekai himself into our other world here like Tim Burton's Beetlejuice! The lap pillow - awkward and juvenile I agree, but then again, it's not the first time we're seeing this awkwardness and gender conformity unfortunately (I guess if we're keeping score, at least we got the Puck lap pillow back in episode 1). Yes, I think framing Emilia's affections as rewards is icky, hopefully we don't get much more of that! Definitely on the side of the scene feels fan service to me, especially with the upward camera shot, right along with Emilia's outfits in the mansion. I'd say there's room for improvement, and happy to hear it noted. Along with the awesome opening bit on toxic masculinity. Really great reaction and balanced discussion this episode, I am not surprised it went over an hour - there's a lot to discuss when you have double length episodes every week and this show doesn't seem to waste much time in moving the plot along! Thanks for all your thoughts and happy that you're really excited to see what comes next!

In The Wonderland Alisa

It’s great to see another new discussion! I hope I’m not too late to join in, haha. Regarding Subaru’s interpretation of why Emilia referred to herself as Satella, my personal take is this: Subaru probably views it as from Emilia’s perspective, she is in the midst of a danger-filled royal selection, and this boy—who seems overly enthusiastic and trusting (for example, not commenting on her looks) and wants to help her—might get dragged into trouble simply by being associated with her. So, in order to keep him completely out of harm’s way, she identifies herself as the witch who symbolizes the ultimate evil to scare him away and force him to leave (because, from her perspective, Subaru, as a native of this world, should naturally know what that name means, and thus conclude that she is dangerous or insane and leave).

In The Wonderland Alisa

Also, this is just a personal take. Back then, I felt that since this story is driven more by characters and psychology than by plot or world-building, to myself, I find it more interesting to explore why the characters act the way they do and why they can’t stop than to focus on what the right thing to do is or what the optimal solution might be. That said, it’s also interesting to see different perspectives on the matter; thank you for the amazing thoughts!

Kotaro 14

I personally love that you always give your audience your straight thoughts. I always gain a new perspective watching your videos, and I love re-experiencing the show in that way. When it comes to the lap pillow scene, I think your reaction is totally understandable. I'm also the type that's very wary of those sorts of scenes. I think it's totally fair to recognize that there is a lot of great character work for Subaru while also still not liking the fan servicey elements of it. When it comes to Emilia's character, I like that we get to see how emotional intelligent and kind she is in this scene. I think it says a lot about her that she would recognize Subaru's suffering and sit with him within his vulnerability when he's practically still a stranger to her all things considered. That said, I totally understand the frustration in her not getting in on the action like she did in the first few episodes. I'm not sure how relatable this is to other female anime watchers, but for me, I feel like I always hold my breath when it comes to female anime characters. I never know what tropes they'll fall into or what depth will be stripped away in service for the male characters. So, your worries are totally relatable, and I respect you for holding onto them until you get to see more. Aside from that scene, I enjoyed the development between Subaru, Rem, and Ram. As you were saying, it's nice to see how his loops have evolved from spending time with one or the other to both of them now. He especially had some great moments with Rem. I think seeing him upset when she went to see Emilia, hanging out with him in the village, and then him getting closer to her as they are finding the kids really left a different impression on him this time around. Keep it up, Subaru! Don't ruin this for yourself 🥳 Also, I just want to say, your commentary for the reaction was amazing. I was laughing so much when you were commenting on Subaru and the kids doing radio calisthenics. You're so right. It is incredibly cheesy. But, somehow, I think it works really well in showing just how much of a dork Subaru really is 😆 He may be infuriating, self entitled, and an insecure mess who causes his own downfall at times, but scenes like this really show that deep down he's a massive dork that wears his heart on his sleeve. Like Emilia said, he's a good boy. We just have to push through the cheese and the cringe to see it, I guess 😆 But anyhow, thank you for the reaction as always! Thank you to the mods as well. I hope you all have a lovely week 💛

The maternal thing and treating Subaru like a little kid is strikes me as…not infantilizing Subaru, but if you’re the love interest – I’ve done a lot of reading about a lot of men in modern day U.S. society (at least) expecting their partners to be more “moms” to them than girlfriends - there’s some scary trends here with that, and I have seen it in real life, so it weirds me out. That’s partially projecting in that scene with me. But that’s a whole separate can of worms in itself. And the idea of her being “maternal” to him feeds into that “Emilia is going to be the trophy love interest and not have much use outside of giving him space to be vulnerable” which…I fear the most for her character right not. But like I said in the discussion, I’m going to try and be open minded, but I’ve seen it happen and I really would like this series to beat the stereotype, haha! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

Hahaha -- well...well, yes. X_X Out of context, the most bizarre sentence in the reactions so far! Haha! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

Oh yeah, I love the lesson we get about saying thank you instead of sorry! I love that this show addresses that so casually! And yesssss, just WAIT until Sunday when we get more with that darn puppy! And ahahahaha!! And why am I not surprised about that dang lap pillow scene! XD Let’s hope it’s not the best in the series – we have a long way to go and I don’t want it to be downhill from here! ;) 😛But I appreciate you humoring me! Thank you for that and the comment!

romaniablack

I also thought she knew at first about the restarts! Yes! I think that since he was vague, he could say what he did; agreed on that! I LOVE Subaru being vulnerable - which I GUSHED about in the discussion, yes. I definitely agree that he didn’t revel in getting what he wanted; he used that moment to open up, which was great. Again, by the end of the discussion, Subaru wasn’t what I felt uncomfortable about with the lap pillow scene - it was where Emilia’s character goes to from here. But, like I also said in the discussion, I’m keeping an open mind, but I’m also letting you know my concerns because I DO care, yes! Hopefully, the show proves me wrong, but I am wary. Thanks for the comment!

romaniablack

I am glad Emilia’s there for Subaru; yes, she is a sweetheart. And yeah, I detail in the discussion that it’s great for Subaru to get his vulnerability out on display. And by the end of the discussion, I do detail why I’m uncomfortable, which is where the scene places Emilia in terms of her character. I’ve talked a lot in the intro about the whole toxic masculinity thing, so I think I’ve exhausted that for now - but yeah, by the end of the discussion, if you go back, you’ll see what my issues were! Thanks for the comment, though; I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

romaniablack

THANK YOU - it feels so good to resonate with someone that gets it, too. I guess Emilia in the first few episodes did not come across to me as aloof or naive as she does in this arc, so that change in how we see her character makes me side eye her hard. “Are you not what I thought you were going to be?” but not in the way I’d like. But like I noted in the discussion, I want to be open-minded with her character, so as wary as I am, I’m glad you said that about her character and her traits – that’s good to note moving forward! And thanks for the notes with my intro – I definitely will stumble in articulating my thoughts at times with discussions (I’m not on a script, so I’m just speaking in the moment), so there will be times I wish I could explain myself better, but I appreciate your open mindedness! Thank you for the comment and noting all this - that helps!

renna

Ah, i don't want to bring the topic back up, i got what you meant! I just wanted to complain about the term itself, that's just a ridiculous buzzword in short. Yeah, i didn't listen to the whole discussion (oopsie..)! But then, i'd rather say nothing and let you discover this incredible anime. Hoping you'll like it more and more.

romaniablack

No, it's totally fine! I LOVE reading y'all's comments and seeing your thoughts, so I appreciate it! Feel free to speak your mind in any episode! And thank you!

romaniablack

The mods are INCREDIBLE! Yes, thank you to them! Hahahahaha comparing Emilia to Yuuji (and Sukuna) was NOT on my 2026 BINGO card! That’s hilarious! XD LOVE the concept, though! That is very true about the Puck Lap Pillow! I hadn’t thought of it in that way! I’m glad that someone got what I was getting at - yeah, the scene makes me side eye things a little bit but I’m hoping that it’s all up from here! 😀Affection should not be a reward! Thank you for the comment and kind words - yeah, here is a lot to talk about in these episodes and I’m SUPER excited for this week and what’s to come!

romaniablack

You are NEVER too late to join in! As long as there are no spoilers, I’ll always check out a new comment, so thank you!! Thanks for the perspective on that! I’ll definitely note that in a future intro!

romaniablack

That is a good point – I’m doing BOTH in my discussions, so there’s that at least! Why not look at something from a three-dimensional, multi-layered perspective? ;) Thanks for the comments!

romaniablack

I appreciate that you are happy I’m giving some raw thoughts - I will try not to get too emotional when watching, hahaha! I can let it get me heated sometimes! I definitely felt “off” about that scene, but I’m going to try and see what the show does with Emilia’s character especially - we know that Subaru is going to get development and grow (we hope) - I do appreciate that she’s emotionally savvy to recognizing his struggles and making him stop and sit in his feelings; that was really good and you phrase that well. I appreciate you getting where I’m coming from – yes, I worry about the tropes female characters fall into, and yes “what depth will be stripped away in service for the male characters.” That is EXACTLY it but yeah, I am hopeful that they do more with Emilia than that, so we shall see!! I do love the development with Rem and Ram as well! And yes, don’t mess this up, Subaru!! And yesssss, it was cheesy with his discussion on the kids, but it works SUPER well to show how Subaru wants to be courageous while also being his dorky self! 😀 And yes, Emilia is right; he’s a good boy underneath it all! Thank you for the comment and kind words and I am SO hyped for tomorrow’s new episode!

baseballlover723

I know I'm quite late with this, been a busy week for me. So a minor terminology thing (and I don't think you intend to cause any slight because of this). But Tappei (the creator of Re:Zero) isn't a mangaka, he's an author (or I suppose if you want to be more specific, a novelist, but I think using a more generic term is alright compared to an incorrect one). Tappei writes the Web Novel (alone) and the Light Novel (with an editor and illustrator) (which is considered the "true canon"). Re:Zero has a manga, but it's not made by Tappei. And it's also behind the anime, and written in parallel with completely different mangaka for different arcs. Ie. they started publishing the next arc before the previous one was even done. Both the anime and the manga are adaptions of the Light Novels. But technically, the anime has no relation to the manga outside of obviously being based on the same source material. Ultimately, it really doesn't make a big difference. I doubt anyone would misunderstand what you mean by "mangaka", but nonetheless, I do think words have meanings and we should all strive to use the correct titles. And ultimately, mangaka isn't Tappei's title. (I should also note that it's a bit of a pet peeve of mine when people use "manga" as a standin for "source material" or otherwise propagates manga defaultism. They don't all come from manga! They have different idiosyncrasies due to the nature of their native mediums.) — @32:46 On the topic of Subaru's magic, this is another place where translation makes a difference. But what the Director's Cut calls "shadow" magic is actually "yin" magic (of Yin & Yang fame). I should note that there is a lot more to Yin & Yang than simply dark & light, though I would not say I am qualified to really opine on that (having not grown up in that culture). It's not a bad localization imo, but it does connote a simpler nature than what it would connote in the original Japanese. — @45:45 This is something that some of the official subs have managed to fuck up. And I can't believe they do this. Some official subtitles call Satella "the Jealous Witch". First off, "jealousy" and "envy" are just straight up not the same thing. And secondly, "envy" has a connection to the 7 deadly sins that "jealousy" simply doesn't. So how they managed to choose "jealousy" over "envy" in a story that outright mentions the 7 deadly sins, I have no idea. Something something words mean things. Luckily it seems like your Director's Cut subs don't use "jealousy" and correctly use "envy", though my copy does. Maybe they updated the script? They don't often do that though. But this was an egregious mistake to make imo. Anyway, this is why I think it's important for translators to be intimately familiar with the source material of the thing they are translating. Because you never know when you're gonna hit some key term that needs to be translated one specific way later. — @55:29 I have no translation notes on the "This has gotten to be a bit of a problem" line from Puck. That doesn't mean that there's no information loss, it's just been a long time since I've dove into the S1 subs, so my memory is pretty fuzzy on some things. But I presume if there was a notable difference I'd probably recall something. — @1:01:10 Regarding the hizumakura (lap pillow) thing. That's just kinda a thing in Japanese culture. It's pretty commonly depicted in anime to show intimacy. It's far less common in real life I think (I imagine because the posture sucks). I don't blame you for thinking it's fanservicy though. I imagine that culture shock is also in play for you (which is a perfectly natural thing). I'll also note that Emilia's VA is the one singing the insert song during the lap pillow scene. — @1:24:59: I believe (though I haven't checked) that those are not the clocks (which change color based on the time). — Edit: If you choose to read this out, please omit the bit about working for FLE. I am credited under a pseudonym. @1:25:27 Here's another random deep dive into the translation of this term for the evil dog thingos (and I mostly mention this because I saw someone give a more shallow explanation). So the original kanji is 魔獣 (ma | juu), and if you throw that into Google Translate, it'll tell you that it means "magical beast" or "demonic beast". Of course, that's quite accurate in the generic sense, but as with a lot of things, there's a lot of nuance that is lost in translation. Another pretty important term is 魔女 (ma | jo), which is the original kanji for "witch". The first kanji is the same for both of them (魔: "ma"), which like most kanji, has a lot of meanings. The dictionary definition of 魔 is "witch, demon, evil spirit" (https://www.japandict.com/kanji/%E9%AD%94). But that's as a standalone word, and not as part of another word generally. 魔 (ma) generally adds the meaning of "evil" or "magical / supernatural". 魔女 (ma | jo) translated very very literally, is "evil/magical woman/feminine person/spirit" (and I'll note, males would use 魔人 (ma | jin), though 人 is "human", not "male/masculine", and yeah, that is considered sexist by some: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radical_38#Controversies_over_sexism). And 魔獣 (ma | juu) translated very very literally means "evil/magical beast/animal". Anyway, "witchbeast" is the currently preferred translation of 魔獣 (ma | juu), because it preserves the linguistic connection to "Witch" (which the official subs just gave up on, and left "ma" untranslated). Earlier fansubs used to use "witchfiend", but it was only a few years ago that the Re:Zero fansubbing community ended up deciding to switch over to "witchbeast" (hence why a lot of people might be more familiar with "witchfiend"). I don't exactly recall the reasoning for the preference for "beast" over "fiend". But I do recall being advised by one of our translators that "witchfiend" was falling out of favor and going to be replaced by "witchbeast" in the near future when I was working on the precursor to the FLE Re:Zero subs, which were modified Re:Zero subs for Teeaboo (so we switched there). I should also note that I don't actually speak Japanese, so take this with a grain of salt. But being involved with the Re:Zero fansubbing community (as an English editor) for quite some time now, these kinds of things tend to come up (usually with requests to try and maintain a specific aspect or connection). So the exact details might not be 100% accurate for the precise connotations (mostly working off of memory and some googling of the kanji to check my memory), but the general gist should be close enough. And of course, the most important part, the linguistic link between the translations between "Witch" and "mabeast / witchfiend / witchbeast". — @1:37:07: I'm working off of memory here, but I think it might be connotationally more similar to like saying "You're buff / ripped". There's another anime (that you haven't seen, so I'll keep it vague) that I like where a physically strong female character frequently tries to hide and is embarrassed by her muscular body. But I might be wrong on this. Looking back at the FLE chat logs, I made a note that we should look into it, and it seems like we never did. The base Season 1 subs were already based on a prior fansub, so we mostly only made standardization changes to it, since it had already been looked over for accuracy (not to say that there couldn't still be mistakes). It takes a lot of effort to go line by line through an entire season.

In The Wonderland Alisa

Thank you! I’m really looking forward to watching the rest of the reaction. And yes, if this interpretation is indeed close to Subaru’s own—I also personally think it would be a very self-centered interpretation, one that assumes good intentions, lacks evidence, and serves his self-narrative and psychological stability by reinforcing his sense of purpose and feeling of meaning (Emilia’s actions are good-intentioned; she’s an overly kind and pure girl who truly deserves my protection).

Besim Sani

Out of curiosity, what is it about Emilia being “sexualised” in that like couple second frame that made you feel icky? It wasn’t overly done or pressed on for the absolute sake of it (in my opinion anyway). If anything I felt it was quite tasteful given the circumstances. Humans are sexual creatures underneath all the pretext. I’d argue that sexuality is a part of everyone’s existence on a level that it warrants being addressed. It goes without saying that non-tasteful sexualising comes off as smutty and crass and I’m with you there, which is why i come back to what part of that scene made you feel icky specifically?

romaniablack

So, the shot from above of her breasts was an angle that was one -- they're kind of like the frames where it's a zoom-in on a woman's breasts -- it's a bit objectifying and makes women uncomfortable -- and it's just for the service of the viewer, typically male, hence the whole "male gaze" thing (I'm EXTREMELY simplifying; it's way more complex than that). But yeah, if you listen to the full discussion, I explain it all in detail there. Thanks!

romaniablack

No worries about it being busy – glad to hear your thoughts and thanks for the comment! I appreciate the terminology note! That’s good to know about the mangaka vs. author detail - I’m so used to saying mangaka, that it did slip. Good to make that distinction, though, so I appreciate it. Ohhhh, yeah, I have some ideas about yin and yang; maybe I’ll bring that up in a future intro! Ahhh, that’s interesting about the “Envy” vs. “jealousy” bit – if her name comes up past the first OVA, I’ll note that! Honestly, I felt for these kids and their ergonomics – I could not do the lap pillow position for a while. 😛That is sweet about Emilia singing in that part! Thanks for all the links and translation notes; that’s great to list! Thank you so much for all the information!! And for the comment!

romaniablack

These characters all definitely deserve hugs and protection!
