About the mayonnaise in the pool thing, it's a callback/reference to the re:zero side story "The First Mayonnaise Disturbance" which is about Subaru craving mayonnaise and him trying to create it from scratch with the help of Rem and introducing it to the Re:zero world. It ends with Rem filling the pool with mayonnaise as a way of trying to impress him and he accidentally swims in it. That then leads into what we see here in the OVA.

19:50 Oh, I wish we had more Roswaal fan service, they teased us with the bath scene and then nothing after. You can't just do that, that has to be a crime. Anyway, Ram was amazing as always, honestly my favourite character in the whole show. And yeah, the OVA is a bit of a downgrade in writing from the show. It's alright, some slice of life, some wholesome moments, and fan service, of course. I swear, sometimes it feels like they need to fill a fan service quota, and some of the character writing was a bit more tropey. I know that there's less and less fan service as the show progresses, thankfully. My favourite part about the OVA has to be the scene at the end when Puck makes it snow across the whole capital, truly one of the few "Halcyon Days," as you said. 39:40 - About that, Subaru is into crossdressing. Good for him. 01:07:16 Where is the date? Believe it or not, on a pachinko machine. The author leaves lore in some of the weirdest places. He once left a massive lore drop on a napkin at a hotel he stayed at. I'll just reiterate my point about wholesome relationships with a sprinkle of toxicity, this time with Puck and Emilia. Why would Puck put all that pressure on Emilia? Hmm... maybe Puck is saying something like, "That's what you feel, Emilia. Don't hide from it." Anyway, great reaction as always. You don't know how excited I am for you to react to the next episode, you'll know what I mean when you do watch it.

Puck is actually a lot more toxic then the anime shows and while this isn't technically a spoiler I will put a spoiler warning here in case you wanna read the Cut content on Witch cult translation or watch the Cut content from Aninews on Youtube Emilia's contract with Puck actually makes her combat wise weaker, I won't say more about that

@14:53 Regarding "shounen protagonists" (and this is gonna be a pedantic), but "shounen" is not a genre. It's a manga demographic. And some background on how manga works with this. Basically, most manga gets released weekly, as part of a compilation of various manga titles (so like 1 new chapter of several different manga each week) (note: usually, a bunch of the chapters for the same story will be released together in it's own dedicated comic book, but that usually happens later, once there are enough chapters to make a standalone book). And there's a number of magazines in Japan, and they generally target a specific demographic. "Shounen" is for males aged 10~19. "Seinen" is for males aged 18~30. "Shoujo" is for females aged 10~19. And "Josei" for females 18~30. If your manga gets published in a magazine like "Weekly Shounen Jump", then by definition, the story is a "shounen". It matters not what the contents of your story is. And hence, why "shounen" is generally a poor descriptor for anime, since anime does not remotely resemble this kind of demographic grouping. Hell, sometimes a story will even switch magazines, and it's classification will change. That happened with Vinland Saga, who started out in "Weedly Shounen Magazine" for 7 months before moving to "Monthly Afternoon" (a seinen magazine). Anyway, since these tags aren't strictly related to their contents (though obviously, publishers have generally identified what each demographic is likely to buy), they can be rather dubious to apply as content terms. Of course, most people don't give a shit about that, and use "shounen" to mean any kind of idealistic or simplistic story that is oriented around battling (and "seinen" as the same thing, but much darker, edgier, or gorier). I know you wouldn't like specific examples, but there is no shortage of manga with thematically dissonant theming to it's general magazine publication. Anyway, back to Re:Zero. Re:Zero the anime as I mentioned in another episode, has no relation to it's manga, other than both being based on the Light Novels. Though I'll note that the Re:Zero manga was published in (several) seinen magazines, so if one must use a manga demographic, "seinen" is the most appropriate (though as you've picked up by now, it's not really that applicable imo). That said, I think the trope of "shounen protagonists" is a valid thing, even if it's misleading, since it doesn't necessarily apply to (shounen) (protagonists), but a large subset of them. Sorry for the pretty tangential rant, but people using manga demographics to infer the quality or aspects of a story and judging it based on the tag alone (before knowing anything about it except the demographic and maybe the synopsis) is a pet peeve of mine. — @16:34 I don't want to go into too much detail, but "magic" and "spirit arts" are distinct in universe. Back in OG episode 8, Subaru did ask about it to Puck (as part of the magic learning bit), and Puck said "Magic users cast magic with their own mana, but those who use spirit-arts draw mana from their surroundings. [Subaru line omitted] Basically, it depends on whether you use a gate." — @19:50 Tbf, there was that bath scene with Roswaal swinging his dong around behind Subaru's head. And of course, sex sells. Re:Zero's manga as I noted earlier, was published in a seinen magazine, giving credence to it being oriented for the male gaze (for better or for worse). I should also note that anime watching also skews male in Japan (https://www.d8aspring.com/eye-on-asia/case-study-anime-in-japan), though I found it quite difficult to find the statistic I was looking for (a sampling of how much anime overall is watched by gender, so many of them were about which genres each gender preferred) — @21:46 Tbf (and I'm no wine expert), I was under the impression that most of the aging had to do with the aging it in the barrel (not the bottle). And some googling has shown me, that not all aging improves the quality of the wine (though obviously, nobody ages wine to make it worse on purpose). Eventually, the alcohol will turn into vinegar as well. So I would say that Subaru's concerns about it still being good are pretty plausible, since presumably these bottles have been hidden away for many many years. — @29:39 Actually, there's 2 drinking ages in play here. The drinking age in Japan is 20 (so Subaru is using that as a reference). But Emilia mentions that the drinking age is 15 in Lugunica, so she would be using that as a reference (not being from Japan and all). So imo, the implication here would be that Emilia is at least 15, not at least 20 (or perhaps at least 18, though I think the number 18 isn't actually present in the Japanese for that phrase about the porn sites). — @24:11 I love Ram's sass as well. She never miss a moment to drop Subaru down a peg. — @30:09 I should note about "manastration" there is another translation for it called "Magic Release Period" (this would be more accurate to what is literally being said). Obviously, this is a pun, and puns suck ass to translate since you rarely can recreate the pun in another language, forcing the translator to pick a meaning. In this case, the connection to "menstruation" was kept, since that's a significant aspect of how it's being used here with Subaru misunderstanding it. — @32:51: The mayo is covered in the side story titled: "The First Mayonnaise Disturbance", which Memory Snow (Memory Snow itself is a compilation of like 5 or so side stories) partly adapts? IIRC, this is part of it, but also the trailer that someone linked you (which was not part of Memory Snow proper) is also part of it. I guess I should also talk a bit about Japanese mayo (which you might recognize as Kewpie Mayo), but it's made differently than American mayo. It's also more prominent in Japanese culinary culture (https://thisis-japan.com/mayonnaise/). So mayo is more of a thing in Japan. — @1:08:15 I couldn't agree more. Re:Zero is just simply a show that has so much depth to it, that the few bits of random fanservice detract or distract from that. It's just not a show that people ought to be watching for that kind of thing (doujins would serve them much much better).

In The Wonderland Alisa

A new episode! Haha, finally—a lighthearted, comedic take on the Re:Zero story that we haven’t seen in a while. I really miss this. I understand your feelings about the impression Emilia gave in Chapters 1 and 2. To avoid unintentional spoilers, without getting into the in-story details (i.e., setting aside discussions of character development for now), if viewed purely from an external perspective, something occurred to me later back then, that it might also have to do with the needs of the writing? In Chapter 1, the story is just beginning. The foundational setting of the alternate world, its atmosphere, and the protagonist’s goals all need to be established. Therefore, as Emilia serves as the primary embodiment of all these elements, she naturally can and has to be given the opportunity to stand out. At this point, Subaru’s personal personality, emotions, and character growth (as well as the circumstances of other characters and the world’s background) had already been set up, but they actually weren’t the primary focus. By Chapter 2, Subaru’s adventures in the alternate world—and his personal growth—have officially begun, and new important characters have started appearing one after another (you could say in quite large numbers over a short period). If this chapter shifts its narrative focus from the opening introductions and goal-setting to primarily revolving around Subaru himself and these new characters, then giving Emilia too much screen time and distinctive characterization would distract the attention, disrupt the story’s flow and emotional focus, and—by trying to juggle too much at once—potentially undermine the character development of all characters, including Emilia. In other words... I’m wondering if, aside from the character designs themselves, this might also have to do with the demands of narrative pacing? Sometimes an author needs to take turns stepping certain characters back and bringing others forward to make room and ensure a certain section of the story is crafted well—especially in a long-form story with a large cast (of which many are important). As for the conversation between Pack and Emilia... it’s quite thought-provoking, isn’t it? Taken out of context, by modern standards, it could almost be suspected of being the kind of father who deliberately sets guilt traps, stirs up isolation anxiety, and suppresses his daughter to control her 😂 (Of course, I’m not saying Pack is actually that kind of spirit—it just made me think of a possible misunderstanding). But considering the story’s underlying sense of danger and the context of this episode, it instead feels like a small reminder for her not to set her expectations too high, not to let her guard down too easily, and not to get too comfortable with the current sense of ease. Although it’s very direct and harsh, and the way it’s phrased does make it feel not really fair and a bit hurtful—it probably can’t be called an “all good” parental remark.

OVAs - especially for shows with fan service already sprinkled in the regular episodes, are usually trouble! There's no shortage of OVAs that if you blind watch at random, you'd have to wonder if it's just another word for hentai, and these are in popular series too. But there are also some series where maybe we wish we could get those kinds of OVAs and never do! Haha! Luckily this episode is pretty wholesome - but definitely not perfect as you rightly call out. I enjoyed the snow contest, it's nice seeing something a bit more lighthearted. And his head falling off the statue at the end is just the perfect bit of dark humor for this show!

romaniablack

Ooohhhh, okay, that makes WAY more sense! Thank you for the comment and explaining this! I appreciate it!

romaniablack

Oh yeah, I'm glad this episode is wholesome for the most part! I thought the snow contest was super cute and I really love when this show does some dark humor! XD When it does it right, it's SO good! Thank you for the comment! :D

I seriously wish we had more of Roswaal in general! But yes, I love Ram in this so much! <3 I really do love some wholesome parts of this OVA – but yeah, it’s like filler where it’s “lighter,” but also at the risk of not being in character, completely. Drag Queen Subaru WHEN. Need that, and good for him! And that is WILD – this author is a madman, confirmed. But I will watch the pachinko short! Thanks for that info! I get wary of characters pressuring others to “push” them in directions, sometimes, but yeah, we’ll see where all that goes as we get more into the series! Thank you for the kind words and comment and OOOOHHHH yes, it’s going to be a LONG discussion with Director’s Cut Episode 7! Hoo boy!

romaniablack

Thanks - I know how the manga publishers like Shonen Jump work – I’ve read and analyzed manga for decades. 🙂The English teacher in me is labeling protagonists in series (manga included) that are Shonen, as Shonen Protagonists. I do understand the differences between Josei, Shonen, Shoujo, etc. It’s a generalization for sure, but yeah, a majority of series I watched as a kid were part of the Shonen genre. And I know that Re:Zero is based on light novels, but I’m just comparing what I’m used to with Re:Zero, even though it’s not necessarily the same genre, but the audience base, I’m assuming, are young adult males, similar to Shonen. That’s the connection I’m making. Sorry if I triggered a pet peeve, but that’s where I was making a connection and where I make it when I talk about this in the discussion, if that makes sense. Yes, thank you for noting that distinction between magic and spirit arts. Right – and yeah, I noted how it was problematic in THAT scene for the homophobic connotations. Also not great. To be fair, wine gives me a headache, so I’m not a master of it as well – but it’s just a joke, for the most part. 🙂 I didn’t realize this was going to become a math problem between the drinking ages with Emilia. Hahaha, I didn’t sign up for that in watching an anime! XD But that’s a great point to bring out. Ram is so much fun in this; I loved her in the OVA. Oohhh, Magic Release Period would be a much better title for this! Thank you for the information on that! And thanks for the notes on the side story involving the mayo! That’s interesting that Memory Snow adapts so much! And yes, I’m going to react to the Trailer and extra clip in the intro for Episode 8 of the Director’s Cut. I do remember that Kewpie is the Mayo that is prevalent in Japan, yes! *shakes hands on last note* Thank you so much for the comment and all the information! I appreciate it! 😀

romaniablack

I’m sure that “light-hearted fare” is….rare in this series! XD Yeah, you make a good point that it’s setting up Emilia as the embodiment of the elements to set up the story. And they wanted her to step back to let Ram and Rem shine; as an English teacher, it’s a formula I’ve seen in writing – I just, like I said, get wary because I’ve seen what’s happened with characters like hers in other stories and I’m hoping there will be more to it than that – luckily, Episode 7 of the Director’s Cut has me VERY excited to talk about her in more detail! Yeah, Puck has me intrigued to see what more we get with him as we go – so I’m curious how their dynamic will develop. We shall seeeee! Thank you for the comment! 😀

> Sorry if I triggered a pet peeve, but that’s where I was making a connection and where I make it when I talk about this in the discussion, if that makes sense. No worries. It was mostly just reminded me of people doing that kind of thing of judging an anime by it's cover (or tags), which isn't really what you were doing. Though I do think that it plays into expectation bias. Actually funny story about expectation bias and Re:Zero. There was another reactor I watched (and note this is only for stuff in Arc 1 and 2, so it should be safe for you), and they started with thinking that Re:Zero was a generic isekai and all the characters were simple and lacking depth, and despite them being decently analytical, and clearly paying attention and noticing details, managed to get expectation biased so hard that he just kept seeing more and more evidence to reenforce what he thought. I remember a big thing he would bring up was that he thought that Subaru was some master manipulator and was secretly the villain of the story and it was a cautionary tale (in Arc 2 specifically). Surprisingly, neither his attention to detail nor his logical conclusion was greatly flawed. His big flaw was Occam's razor and the complete rejection of the little details that gave characters depth. As a note, I find that the fact that someone can consume a piece of media, and look at the same details and come to a complete opposite conclusion due to their personal life experiences and what they keep in mind vs mentally discard is a mark of a complex and interesting story. A story that can be interpreted in multiple ways, much like the real world. Anyway, expectation bias can be a tricky thing, though I suppose as it relates to how something fits to a trope or genre, is basically inevitable when consuming media. --- > To be fair, wine gives me a headache, so I’m not a master of it as well Me as well, I get Asian flush, so I rarely drink anymore. It's just rarely worth the logistical hassle when I'm eating out (cause I almost always have to drive there and back, or figure out a DD) and I've never really liked the taste of it to opt for alcohol at home. I'm usually just a water guy, but if I wanted a flavorful drink, I'd just go for a soda then. --- > I didn’t realize this was going to become a math problem between the drinking ages with Emilia. Hahaha, I didn’t sign up for that in watching an anime! XD But that’s a great point to bring out. It's really more of a logic problem than a math problem imo. Though I suppose those tend to be grouped together. I have a reconvinced notion that English teachers wouldn't like math that much and vice versa, but I think that's heavily influenced by my education preferences. I was always a STEM oriented student and English (and writing in particular) was my least favorite subject in school. My past self would probably be shocked to know that I'd spend several hours per week lamenting over how to best tweak a line's structure or vocabulary to best communicate a narrative while while having a consistent and high quality prose.

romaniablack

Hahaha, no, it’s totally okay! I appreciate you going the extra mile to explain things and your perspective. But yes, expectation bias is a thing! Especially when watching others consume the media you enjoy or have a deep attachment to. *shakes hands* Those who are triggered by nitrates unite! Yeah, my entire body just rejects alcohol to a terrible extent, so I avoid it if I can and agreed – soda is where I go for a treat drink-wise. I need to drink more water. I didn’t sign up for math in anime! XD There’s definitely a science to it - most English teachers are more active on one side of the brain than those that are in STEM, who use the other side of the brain more actively. It’s so wild how varied we are as humans!
