In our final Fall Season session for this year (before we move on to Holiday watercolors), we’ll be sketching three beautiful autumn leaves β€” Oak, Japanese Maple, and Chinese Lantern Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata). Each has its own distinctive rhythm and shape, making this a perfect exercise in observation and line confidence.

✍️ This is Episode 3 of our new Drawing for Watercolor Artists series β€” created to help you strengthen and grow your drawing skills. As always, these sessions are designed specifically for artists who draw directly on delicate watercolor paper, combining classic drawing principles with watercolor-specific care. Enjoy previous "Drawing for Watercolor Artists" episodes here: https://www.patreon.com/collection/1666609

I this session, we’ll explore how to:

🍁 Study natural, organic leaf shapes with close attention to stem direction, negative space, proportion and edge character

✨ Minimize erasing by drawing only intentional strokes (the "ghost stroke" exercise is invaluable)

πŸ’§ Plan your watercolor layers as you draw, so your outlines are paint-ready

Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just getting comfortable drawing freehand before painting, this practice will help you approach your next watercolor piece with more confidence and precision. Can’t wait to share this cozy, leaf-filled session with you all on Friday! πŸ‚πŸ–ŠοΈ

I enjoy the drawing process before painting a project. It helps me become familiar with the nuances of the composition before painting. Fall leaves is dropping just in time as I'm in the homestretch of completing your 3 pumpkins tutorial which I'm loving. The blue pumpkin drew me in:)
