Hello, dear Patrons!

Next week, I'm inviting you to join me as we paint a lush, vibrant tropical composition together - and it is going to be so good. This tutorial is a little celebration of colour, texture, and all the things that make watercolour feel like pure joy. Here's a taste of what we'll be exploring:

🦜 Painting vibrant tropical birds: we'll learn how to break down a colourful subject into manageable segments and build gorgeous, soft feather texture that truly comes alive on the page.

πŸ‹ Working with yellows: yes, that wonderfully tricky colour group! If you painted along with me for the Yellow Roses tutorial, this will feel like a natural next step. We'll continue practicing glazing and creating realistic, luminous shadows on yellow subjects using colour theory.

✨ Granulating watercolour effects: one of my absolute favourite things to paint with. The texture these pigments create is simply magical, and tropical subjects are the perfect playground for them.

And here's the best part - if any of this feels a little overwhelming at first glance, please don't worry for a single second. I'll be breaking the composition into a bird-only segment and a fruit-only segment, with separate outlines provided for each. So if your heart is calling you toward just the bird, or just the coconuts - you can absolutely do that. You're in charge of your own creative journey here.

The full pigment list is below, so you can get your colours ready ahead of time. 🎨

Get your brushes ready, friends. Whether you're here for the feathers, the fruit, or simply the joy of losing yourself in colour for an afternoon β€” this one is for every soul who loves birds, blooms, and the quiet magic of watercolour. I can't wait to paint alongside you. 🌺

See you next week! πŸ’›

The color of the bird reminded me of a display in the Alaska State Museum in Juneau. It feature all sorts of uses for rare earth minerals found up there. One was a chunk of malachite and next to it was a tube of Daniel Smith paint. That was soo cool!

Lydia Hentschel
