🌴 🦜 In preparation for our upcoming tropical composition tutorial, I wanted to share an ad-free early look at my latest YouTube video, going live this weekend. In it, I walk through one of my favourite topics: the watercolor greens that simply cannot be mixed using yellow and blue - and more importantly, why.

🎨 We cover two categories: the super-vivid Phthalos you see on the parrot, and the extraordinary super-granulating green on the palm leaves - and I demonstrate exactly how I painted both. As always, I go a little deeper than just the how-to. We touch on the physics of light and how subtractive color mixing actually works, which I think is a very important concept to know for anyone serious about watercolor mixing. If you've ever wondered why your mixes sometimes look flat or dull - this video answers that question at the root.

🟢 Want to explore the full spectrum of watercolor greens? I have an in-depth review covering everything - from single-pigment greens to convenience mixes and all the way to granulating colours - including swatches, the mixes they make, and my favorite use cases. Watch it here and download a FREE PDF guide: https://www.patreon.com/posts/essential-ad-152495282

Enjoy this warm-up before we dive into the full composition together! The full Patreon tutorial - with real-time narrated recording, reference photo, black and white outlines, and complete pigment list - is available here (Tier 2 & Tier 3): https://www.patreon.com/AnnaBucciarelli/posts/green-parrot-pt-159869275

Thank you as always for being here and for making these tutorials possible. I truly couldn't do this without you. 🌺

Linda Allard

D'accord... Là comprends maintenant. À demain sur YouTube 👋 🎨

Hi Anna, New here and looking forward to getting started. I'd like to comment on granulating water colors. They look so beautiful and effortless, yours do anyway. I have a few colors that are supposed to be granulating but they don't! Is it the water ? I even bought some W&N granulating medium to make my own and it does nothing at all!!! Any suggestions. Thank you!

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Jill, Welcome to the community - so happy you're here and already diving into the wonderful (and sometimes mysterious!) world of granulating watercolors! 🎨 Your question is such a good one, and don't worry - the granulating medium not working is actually really common, and there's a lot going on behind the scenes with these pigments. Before I get into it, could you tell me which W&N colors you're working with? If you have the Color Index (CI) codes from the tube labels, even better - that way I can cross-reference exactly what pigments you're working with and give you more specific guidance! In the meantime, here are a few things that have a big impact on how much granulation you'll actually see: - Paper texture matters enormously. Hot pressed paper is simply too smooth - the pigment has nowhere to settle into, so granulation is almost invisible. Cold pressed is perfectly fine and will give you lovely results, but rough paper is really where granulating pigments shine and where you'll see the most dramatic effect. - Adding clear water drops while the wash is still wet can also enhance and encourage granulation - it gently disturbs the pigment and helps those particles separate and settle beautifully. - Also worth keeping in mind: granulating pigments exist on a real spectrum. On one end you have classics like Ultramarine Blue, which granulates gently and gives a subtle texture. On the other end are pigments like some of the Schmincke 2-pigment combinations, which are super-granulating and can be almost overwhelming depending on your paper. Depending on where your W&N colors fall on that spectrum, you might be expecting more than they're capable of - or just need the right conditions to see them perform! If you're just getting started with these types of colors, I'd really recommend watching this quick YouTube video where I get into the key techniques: https://youtu.be/WxTcHHE2Vk0 - and then jumping into the Finch & Orchids tutorial here on Patreon, which put a lot of these effects into practice in a rmore methodical way (the entire tutorial is all about these pigments). Happy painting! P.S. Please note: the best way to reach me is via Patreon's direct message feature. Comments can sometimes get lost in the shuffle of updates, but I make a point to review DMs and answer every Friday. Don't hesitate to reach out!

I think the brush you think is an Isabey is actually a Raphael brush? I have a Raphael that is that color and size 1

Anna Bucciarelli

Shellee - you are absolutely correct - my apologies! I have mixed them up because the names in gold have rubbed off and they are roughly the same size...I have updated the description. Thank you so much for catching this.
