They have a canon comic book which shows the shepherds past. It is quite good but a lot of his past is exactly what you expect it to be. The loss of Wash is devastating but that is definitely a whedon thing, to kill off a character who is beloved enough to be emotionally devastating but not important enough to derail the plot. Usually at or near the end of a movie or show. Unfortunately Wash was one of the few besides the shepherd they could kill off. Simon, Kaylee, Mal and Inara all needed to survive for the sake of their romance arcs, Jayne is removable but definitely would not be as emotionally devastating, that leaves Zoey, Wash, or River. River would have been a emotional and poetic tragic arc for her character but the writers thought she had suffered enough and that she deserved a happy ending where she is still partially insane but stable and in control of herself now. That leaves Zoey and Wash, either of which would have been emotionally devastating and I think they decided Wash would hurt more, since not only was he beloved by fans but his death would be heartbreaking for Zoey too. It’s so heartbreaking and so quick that it does kind of take you out of it for the rest of the movie.

TeatroGrottesco

Well, you got breaking glass straight off. :) The opening tracking shot into the ship and reintroducing all the characters was, if there were edits, they were practically invisible. My personal theory is that Book was an Operative in the past and then became a Shepard. Love when Serenity goes in and out of the atmosphere, the sound drops off. River framed in the burning swing was a gorgeous shot.

TeatroGrottesco

My personal theory is that Book was an Operative in the past and then became a Shepard.

Emptysea93

Close, but that’s not it.

Grampa Brad

I love Firefly but many of us were angry at the deaths of Book and Wash. The operative starred in "Love, Actually."

TeatroGrottesco

Thank you for the kind words and for being open to all the suggestions. 🖤🤍 The themes in the movie strike a tone for me, especially the idea of making "people better" and "making better worlds." Having an actual intelligent antagonist who is not just a plot device for the protagonist and is incompetent. Mal's line that he was going to show him a world without sin, which in fact is a world where everyone is dead, because it does not exist. The follow-through of the idea that they created the Reavers in their attempt to make better people. Most film characters have this plot armour to such a degree that there are never any stakes. I remember being in the theater when Wash dies in that scene, you felt it in the audience. Looking where you both were less than 14 hours ago (episode-wise), you had never even heard of these characters or this universe. The verse, the writing, and most importantly, the performances were so good that the losses felt like they were is a credit to everyone involved. The scene at the end where was Mal was talking to Zoe about the ship they were actually taking about her was a nice piece of writing in dealing with grief and to keep going.

Grampa Brad

You may be right, my friend. My theory is that Book was the commanding general at the Battle of Serenity Valley.

TeatroGrottesco

Also, a good theory. I just base it on he thought laterally and never came from a place you expected. The scene in Object in Spaces where Jubil say that is not not Shepard and when River hears what he is saying at the dinner table.

TeatroGrottesco

He was also in a great David Mamet film, Redbelt. Ending was awful but the overall movie was great. The ending was just off if you know the subject matter. I was angry as well, we should have been I think that was part of the point. The nice, good, and people we love don't always make it and we should effect us when they don't.

Grampa Brad

Alan Tudyk (Wash) stars in a series called "Resident Alien."

TeatroGrottesco

It is for me... lol I like that arc better. lol If figured it was a bit different in the comics.

I’m sad it’s over but your entertaining and heartfelt reactions have made it an absolute pleasure rewatching this show once more, thank you. I hope you both have recovered a little after the trauma of Serenity’s conclusion. Nanette with the tears but Carolyn looked absolutely shell shocked. My heart sank knowing what was to come when I saw your Hawaiian shirt during your intro. It’s such a gut punch for everyone who’s grown to love Wash throughout the show’s run. It did raise the stakes for the final battle when it looks like everyone is a potential casualty. The good news is you can simply watch the show again and just skip Serenity, pretending it never happened.

Ian Forbes

Great reaction! Totally understand and share in the sadness at losing Book and Wash but if you watch pretty much anything Joss Whedon did, there’s a strong likelihood that at least one beloved character will not make it to the end. The comics carried on the story and are canon … not sure I want to spoil what happens there but Nanette and Carolyn, if you want to know, DM me via Patreon.

FranciscoGios

Well I will finish off the rest of the Firefly episodes from you guys. Now watching this reaction you guys made it worth it. Carolyne the only reason they killed off Wash was because Alan Tudyk was unable to fulfilled the rest of the contract with the studio if they would had made season 2 of Firefly. The producer decided to kill off his character, this is sometimes how Hollywood is with their client actors or actresses.

Totally Whatever

We didn’t realize that was a Josh Whedon thing! Glad we didn’t know before watching.

Totally Whatever

Yes! Glass right away was a win. It would make sense that he was an operative. I do wish they would have gone deeper into his background.

Totally Whatever

Couldn’t agree more with everything you said. Just 14 hours and the crew feels like family - just incredible on all levels. Thank you again for recommending this series.

Totally Whatever

Thank you for watching it with us! We are recovering, it took some time to regroup after that. I’ve never seen Carolyn speechless.

Totally Whatever

Thanks, Ian. And thanks for the warning on Joss Whedon’s other projects. I think we might need to read the comics now. How many are there?

Totally Whatever

So glad to hear that you will finished the other episodes. We wish we could go back and watch it all again. Oh no! Of course, it was a contract dispute. We should have guessed.

Totally Whatever

He was fantastic! Only one of us has seen Love, Actually - so we have to add it to our list.

Grampa Brad

Well said. Alan Tudyk playing a space ET alien sent to destroy earth is a funny series. Alan said not just the other cast of firefly but the crew was welcome at Nathan Fillion's place to play HALO or hang out said a lot about Nathan and Alan.

Ian Forbes

There are a few and some are harder to find than others. They published some compilations which you can find on Amazon and the wiki pages and Reddit searches will try to provide a reading order. I think the key ones to find are The Firefly Legacy Edition Book 1 and Book 2; they contain the events post Serenity and include The Shephard’s Tale so you get more info on Book.

Finished the reaction of the movie. Wow. Yep, it's powerful and tough. I have read a lot of reactions over the years since the movie. A few will claim that Wash's death wasn't needed. Okay, it wasn't. It upped the stakes right then. From that moment forward, anyone else could have died. If they had all made it, there would have been no tension in that fight. Further, with Book dying, everyone figures that the rest are safe, so it hits that much harder. I knew this would hit Carolyn hard. I hope she has recovered. As many have said, just stick to the series and they all live on. I also thought it would be tough for Nanette to see how hard Mal has gotten. Not since the Pilot episode have we seen him this hard. It shows how tough it has been on them and the crew as well as the dialog about jobs being harder and harder to find. The Operative is a great villain. "I'm a monster." He knows exactly what and who he is and he believes. Chilling. That actor is great! Seen him in several things and he does not disappoint. Did you ever get the Firefly comics? In my head, Book was an Operative as well. He knew too much about them for him not to be. I think Zoe's dress at the end was either the slinky dress Wash got her or her wedding dress? I'm not remembering now. Great reaction! Thanks for sharing! Take care!

Totally Whatever

Thanks for watching the whole series with us, Jon. I do think Carolyn is still recovering. We have read some of the comics, so the characters live on!

So, I am seeing your reaction almost a year late. And I am impressed by your comments that nobody warned you. It is pretty much an unspoken rule among the fan community that no one reveals the spoilers of the movie. And while I am sorry you had to go through that, you are now one of us. The emotionally traumatized fans of Firefly. Welcome.

Totally Whatever

A year late - but we are so glad you are here! With such a massive spoiler, we were shocked that nobody slipped. It probably helped that we posted all of the episodes on Patreon first. That wasn't intentional, we were still figuring out the ins & outs of YT and editing reactions. The Firefly fans are the best, and we are happy to be part of the group - even if we had to be traumatized during a scene we shall never forget.

Joeking1701

Hi ladies, have managed to catch up with your excellent Firefly reactions, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I was a big fan when this came out, even attending some of the Starfury conventions in London when they came over. I got to meet most of the actors, with the exception of Gina Torres. If you want to know the backstory to Shepherd Book, there was a graphic novel that came out not long after the film came out.

Totally Whatever

We are very jealous that you met most of the cast. We will check out the graphic novel, thanks for the suggestion.
