such a great fun movie...........1 of my faves.........as a kid I saw this as a late night tv movie in double feature with Where Eagles Dare, another clint ww2 movie that is required viewing..........I do think Kelly's is fun, and has inspired other movies........clooney 3 kings in 1999.........but I think what makes this movie interesting is the timing of its production, mash the movie had been a smash hit and tv show was coming, so I think Hollywood felt it was ok to be goofy about war

Smooticus

Awesome! Watching this at lunch!

REDR58

Oh yes!

REDR58

Seconded on Where Eagles Dare!

First of all, I'd like to say thank you so much for reacting to this movie. It truly is a forgotten gem. Other reactors have polls and it never wins. But it is such a good movie. I don't know if there's an official category, but I would add heist to the comedy, drama, war description. Commenting as I watch. Congrats! You're the first reactors that realized that the captain was looting the boat! When they were attacking the railroad station with the tanks, they were playing "Oh, for the love of sunshine" a guy singing about his love for a girl. But as they were leaving, they were playing "I've been working on the railroad" Yes, it was Cowboy ringing the bell. Since the locals were still living there, the Germans probably didn't think too much about the bells. The guy that went into the building's attic was placing what is called a satchel charge, a big explosive with a timed fuse. That's why the brown building blew up with such a big explosion. Exactly right! They had fun with the walking to the tank scene and made it like a western showdown, since Eastwood had made all those "spaghetti westerns" in Italy earlier in the 60s. Telly Savalas was in a lot of war type movies in the 60s. He ended up with a TV series called Kojak, a NYC detective. His trademark in the show is that he usually had a sucker or tootsie roll pop in his mouth. His catch phrase was "Who loves ya, baby?" You may remember Carol O'Connor as Archie Bunker in All In The Family. What a funny, ground-breaking show that was! Don Rickles was one of the first insult comedians. He made fun of everybody. He was good friends with Johnny Carson from the Tonight Show. Johnny nicknamed him "Mr. Warmth." There's tons of him on YouTube. You should watch at least one so you can appreciate the nickname. He was great, I thought. Of course, it would be hard for him to do his act in today's PC world. I haven't seen all your reactions yet, so I don't know if you've seen the Blues Brothers or not. I couldn't find it in your collections. But Cowboy turns up in that movie if you watch for him. And if you haven't seen The Blues Brothers, you really need to. Willard (Dean Stanton) was a prolific character actor. He was in many many things, and he's always a great actor. You've probably seen him in things and just don't remember. Gavin MacLeod (Moriarty) ended up with as the captain of a cruise ship on the TV series The Love Boat. Bad continuity: The village where it started was destroyed by Mulligan's mortars after they pulled out. The captain was trying to salvage the yacht there. But when they went for 3 days off, they were in another village, and the captain was still working on stealing the yacht. They sent Cowboy around to see if there was a side entrance to the bank. He didn't find one. But when they entered the bank, Cowboy and a few others ran in from a side door. I have a connection with this movie. And it's true what you said. If there's not a war going on, driving or commanding a tank is a lot of fun. We convoyed a lot on the autobahn. The first tanks we had when I got to West Germany would go 45 or 50 mph (with a little modification 😉 ) We had to qualify once a year in tank gunnery, so we got to shoot the main gun, machine guns, and just all the toys an 18 or 19 year old guy would have a blast (pardon the pun) shooting all that stuff. If you noticed, the gunner had to aim through a scope, similar to what's on a rifle, just bigger for the main gun. We could always tell the new gunners. They didn't hold their head right when they shot, and there were many "Gunner's eye" or a black eye. LOL Some of those tanks really had a kick when the main gun went off. OK, I've bored you enough. a ba de a ba de a ba dat's all folks! Be well, Greg

Totally Whatever

Great trivia, Greg! No, we haven't seen Blues Brothers - we've seen some clips, of course, but not the whole movie. We might consider it for the holidays.

REDR58

Presumably Oddball had a record player stashed somewhere in his tank. I wonder how the heck that thing was able to play as he’s rumbling around without the needle bouncing all over the place! 😄 Edit: And Hank Williams Jr. with The Mike Curb Congregation’s “All for the Love of Sunshine” was written in 1970 so being diegetic music Oddball is apparently ahead of his time about 25 years! Then again Oddball is basically a 1960-70s-era hippie slightly out of time in general. One of the reasons I love this movie is that anachronistic element.

Greg In East TN

Ha! I hadn't thought of that. They didn't have mobile tape recorders back then (at least I think that's right).

Greg In East TN

It's full of surprise co stars. I think you'd enjoy it.

Greg In East TN

I know this will probably generate a lot of discussion, but since you said this was your first Eastwood movie, you must watch The Outlaw Jose Wales. I think that's his best move that he's done. Some prefer Unforgiven, but I think it's kind of boring until the climax.

Bubba Fett

Definately need to explore some eastwood movies. Outlaw josey wales and hang em high are my two favorites. He has another great wwii called where eagles dare that has another fun plot. My favorite scene is the radio seen with Carroll O'Connor listening to their coms. "The game is on" makes me laugh every time.

REDR58

The first audio tape recorder was invented in 1928 and high quality machines were certainly available by WW2, but the tape machines were just too large to fit inside of a tank. Record players weee also pretty big too, so we’ll have to assume movie magic!

Greg In East TN

You're right of course. We're supposed to ignore facts and just go along with the movie sometimes. :)

JAKH

You saw Harry Dean Stanton (Willard) in "Alien" (1979) The "guy with the packages" was Captain Maitland, who was returning from taking the sailboat to Paris. He was hiding behind the packages because he recognized the voices and names on the radio. He was also the one at the end who went into the bank and saw the "Kilroy" graffito. Telly Savalas wore a helmet for the first hour of the movie because he wanted audiences to see him as Big Joe, not distracted by Kojak's signature polished bald head. The actor playing the German tank commander was also in the excellent true story movie "The Great Escape" (1963), which you gals should watch even though it is outside your normal time frame. It has a great ensemble cast. Telly Savalas and Donald Sutherland were both in "The Dirty Dozen" (1967), another big name ensemble cast that you should consider. The Tiger tanks in the movie had a stylized key symbol on the front of the hull and the back of the turret, which indicates that they were from the infamous 1st SS Panzer Division, which was commanded by the hardcore fanatic Sepp Dietrich ("Dietrich" translates to English as "key").

JAKH

Great early Clint Eastwood movies to consider: "Where Eagles Dare" (1968) - based on a book by Alistair Maclean "Dirty Harry" (1971) "Magnum Force" (1973) - Dirty Harry sequel "The Eiger Sanction" (1975) "The Enforcer" (1976) - Dirty Harry sequel "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976) "Escape from Alcatraz" (1979) *True Story*

JAKH

Another 1970 true story that you should consider: "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (1970) Watch it for December 7th

- The way you remember the characters right away by their names makes this film even more entertaining, because not every film can do that. - Even though he plays the General, I can only ever see Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker from All in the Family. - I say "negative waves" way too much in my personal vocabulary, and it comes directly from this film. I agree with Carolyn, Oddball seemed very 1960s for 1944. - Little Joe is hilarious, played by Stuart Margolin. Good actor. Big Joe was played by Telly Savalas of "Kojak" fame. - Harry Dean Stanton, who plays Private Willard, has been in everything from The Godfather Part II to Pretty in Pink to The Green Mile. He was a very prolific character actor. - I loved Don Rickles. What I find crazy is that, this movie was 1970 and his "Toy Story" voice work was in 1995. That was 25 years after Kelly's Heroes. Toy Story was 30 years ago. That means that more time has passed between Toy Story and today than from Kelly's Heroes to Toy Story. Great reaction! I can't wait for more Clint Eastwood!

Crazy Ivan Games

"The Great Escape" is a great movie! Would love to see a reaction.

REDR58

The movie was filmed in Yugoslavia and most of the equipment that’s seen in the movie was provided by the Yugoslav government and Army. Much of it was older US equipment that was given (sold to?) to the country after World War II. Just about all the American vehicles seen in the movie are more or less World War II authentic. I think some of the equipment is postwar, but the Sherman tanks, Jeeps, half tracks and other vehicles are more or less right. That said, the German “Tiger” tanks are mockups. A real Tiger tank was much larger and had a different wheel arrangement than the vehicle show in the movie. The movie Tiger’s tracks are much too narrow, too short and the hull is not long enough. This is because the movie “Tigers” were smaller, old Russian T-34 tanks (used by the Yugoslav Army) that were modified with a fake upper hull shell, turret, gun and other details added on to look as close as possible to real Tiger tanks. In a lot of movies filmed after but that were set during the war (“Battle of the Bulge,” “Patton” and so on) filmmakers were forced to use newer equipment than existed in WW2 because authentic vehicles was hard to come by, especially in running order. This movie was made about 25 years after the war and very few, if any, real WW2 German tanks were left in running condition and most of the ones that still existed were in museums. Even today, there is only a single Tiger I in running condition at a museum in England. So a real effort was made by the movie producers to make everything look as realistic as possible, given the constraints of what they had on hand. Oddball (Canadian actor Donald Sutherland) carries a “liberated” German Luger P 08 as his sidearm and his tank has a German steel army helmet on one of its headlights. There are a few businesses in the United States that let you drive in in some cases shoot the guns in a real tank, including M4 Sherman tanks like you see in the movie. $875,000 in 1945 is about $15,700,000 today! Great reaction, as always!

Thirded!

Greg In East TN

Me, too! and the original Midway for June 4th.

Totally Whatever

Yes, I knew we recognized him! We haven't seen Kojak, so we didn't recognize Telly Savalas.

Totally Whatever

We've officially added "negative waves" to our vocabulary, too. Glad you enjoyed this reaction and thanks for the trivia.

Totally Whatever

Very interesting information about the military vehicles, especially the 'Tiger' tanks. I just googled "drive a tank" 😲 There are more options than I expected!

Mr. Writhms

There is a movie called "Three Kings" with the same sort of plot (stealing gold), set in the Iraq War. It's pretty good. It stars George Clooney.

Greg In East TN

Be careful what you wish for, gals. Here's a short video of a Russian tanker that took his wife with him on the gunnery course. ROFL Of course, if you just want to drive one, that's ok. But think about this if you want to fire a tank. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/c9sfPK06ZDU

I'm happy you liked it! It really is such an underrated and overlooked film. I tried to make a reaction happen elsewhere for years, but the best it could achieve was loosing badly on a few polls. My parents were not big on movies. I can count on one hand how many times we went to the theater or rented movies while I was growing up. With just a 2-3 over-the-air channels at home, I mostly watched whatever was on TV or what we had recorded. Watching several of these these classic 60s and 70s war movies together with my dad was a recurring thing. But this one stands out as the most unique and entertaining of them all. I've seen it so many times as a kid that I'm so familiar with the dubbed version, the original English actually still feels odd to me. As REDR58 already mentioned, this is one of the most accurate movies regarding the authenticity of the military hardware shown. And I think you did interpret it correctly, Oddball has very similar vibes as a hippy from the 60s. But the entire movie has some anti-establishment subtext to it. Eastwood is a good actor, but probably even better director. The Dollars trilogy from the 60s made him an international star. If you would like to get into spaghetti westerns, these are a good start. The Dirty Harry series from the 70s is also good, especially the first two, and there are less reactions to that. He also stars in several great western later in his carrier, that reinterpreted the genre, like the The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider, or one of his best, the Unforgiven. But this latter works best if you have seen some of his other westerns before. And a few other underrated, but great movies of him I like: Where Eagles Dare, A Perfect World, Escape from Alcatraz.

Totally Whatever

Thank you for such an excellent recommendation, Gábor! We will have to watch some more Eastwood movies - Dirty Harry is high on our list.

Totally Whatever

Oh no, she seems so unhappy. I have a feeling Carolyn and I would love it - with good ear protection, of course.

Greg In East TN

Here is a short video of the tanks I used to be on when I was in West Germany on the East/West German border. The first time they fire it, the driver didn't have the brake on and it just rolled backwards. But watch the firing at 0:58, and you'll see the front end rare up. That takes one hellofa kick to lift that much weight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NurGf1zkEB0

REDR58

Holy cow she is really upset!

REDR58

Greg did you ever fire the missile out of the M551?

REDR58

Here’s a quick view of the intro of the “Kojak” series that several people below mentioned that Telly Savalas (Aristotelis "Telly" Savalas) starred in. I don’t remember much about this series as it was a little bit before my time, but my mom used to watch it. https://youtu.be/HY2reJ9ktRo?si=Fl1nklTLCWapjRUt Savalas also portrayed a very famous James Bond villain in a movie called “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” The villain in question was portrayed by a number of different actors over the years. He is my favorite of all the actors in that role. Savalas’ daughter, Ariana Savalas, sings with the “Post Modern Jukebox” Band: https://youtu.be/Q4k7RKaX3EA?si=voWBPvDWuLxg0yu3
