Geez. I hope Rocky fares better than the Bears.

Michael Lynch

Yes yes yes! Ivan is played by Dolph Lundgren. He is truly an impressive specimen. He was a chemical engineer at MIT and a national European karate champion. Is 6’5” and 240 pounds. Not to mention the looks. He had it all. Stallone wanted to see what kind of power he had and he had. Dolph punched him in the chest. That one punch bruised Stallone‘s heart and put him in the hospital.

This movie is so exciting. In the theater, people were cheering at the end of the movie like they were at a real sports event. Probably the greatest soundtrack to work out to because you can visualize the scenes from the movie that it goes with while you work out.

Dorsalfinsky

I thought he was great in Johnny Mnemonic. Seriously.

Dorsalfinsky

How can it be the greatest soundtrack ever. It ain’t got no Eye of the Tigre.

The only thing I don't like about the Rocky franchise is every time I watch one of the movies, I always tend to get an urge to go running or join a gym or something.....or at least until I remember how much I like donuts and cake 😁

M-O-O-N, that spells Rocky!

Crimson Ace

Dolph Lundgren (Ivan Drago)... drummer, karate black belt champion, body builder, soldier, intellectual, bouncer, master of chemical engineering, MIT scholarship recipient, bouncer, NYC socialite, boxer, mixed martial artist, talent judge, model, singer, speaks 5 languages, cancer survivor, husband, father, director, and star of almost 100 movies. A film of his life would seem like a farce, but his story has always fascinated me.

There are so many other really excellent movies I’d prefer you watch before you watch anymore Rocky movies (or sequels in general). How about the movie that won Billy Bob Thornton an Academy award: SLING BLADE. Or Steven Soderberg‘s first movie: SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE. It won best picture at the Cannes film festival and was the first Indie movie to make over $100 million at the box office. Please, you don’t have to watch every sequel. Most of them suck.

Totally Whatever

We really wanted to see this one after falling in love with some of the characters. I know we have more excellent movies to watch, too. We try to put out a good balance.

Thanks for doing another Rocky reaction. Each movie brings another dimension to the story and characters. I think each movie has heart.

Mark M

I'd love to watch Sling Blade but I can't find it streaming on any platform. Normally I can just rent from amazon but for some reason Sling Blade just comes up showing 'This movie is currently unavailable'.

Flounder

Yeah that is a problem. You either have to get it on dvd or BitTorrent it. The different cuts of the movie complicate things too. I far prefer the original theatrical cut. SL&V is available all over the place though.

Hello ladies I hope you girls are having a good time with the movies. I think I remember telling you guys that this is one of my favorite aRocky movies the only reason being that not because they killed off Apollo but because since we were young, we were taught the USSR was the grand enemy of the West so yeah like Carolyn said this movie was very political. So glad you girls watch it, see you girls on next time.

How did y'all enjoy seeing Rocky solve the Cold War?

Totally Whatever

So good to hear from you Francisco. I do remember you mentioning that this was a favorite.

Another great reaction. Although I enjoyed this Rocky entry, it was never even close to my favorite. To me, they go in the order of their release. That is, I like (love) Rocky I best, followed by Rocky II, etc., with the exception of Rocky V which is terrible and not worth watching. While I understood the dramatic and narrative purpose of killing off Creed, I was very sorry to see him go. I never understood why Carl Weathers didn’t have a huge Hollywood career. He was good looking, charismatic, physically impressive and a hell of an actor. He should have been a megastar. But I long ago reconciled myself to the stupidity of Hollywood and its capacity to ignore immense talent. The casting of Ivan Drago was interesting. Dolph Lundgren holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering, is reputed to have a genius IQ and was a fourth degree karate black belt as well as the European karate champion before winning the role of Drago. But, as impressive as he is, he’s still no Carl Weathers. And he’s not much of an actor. When he heard that Lundgren was playing the titular role in The Punisher a few years later, Stallone reportedly was incredulous, saying to the director “You gave that guy lines?” Years after the film came out, Stallone recounted the story of the time he asked Lundgren to hit him as hard as he could, as part of their fight scene. He wanted authenticity. Lundgren was understandably hesitant to do so; this film was going to be his big break and the last thing he wanted to do was injure its star. But he did it. He hit Stallone in the chest so hard that Stallone had to be taken to the hospital later that night, with chest pains. The tissue surrounding his heart had become dangerously inflamed as a result of the punch. He was held in the intensive care unit for several days before filming could resume. Y’all wondered if there were any limits on the size discrepancies between fighters. Other than the differentiation of weight classes, there are not. And there’s no size limit on heavyweights. However, once you get that large, greater size can be a detriment, not an advantage. There are several recent examples of heavyweight challengers standing 9 inches shorter and weighing 85 to 100 pounds less than the defending champion, yet winning decisively. Probably the best example in history of this was Jack Dempsey vs Jess Willard. Dempsey was 6 ft tall and weighed in for the fight at 187 pounds. Willard stood 6 ft 7 inches and outweighed Dempsey by 60 pounds. Dempsey not only beat Willard to win the championship, he gave Willard a brutal beating on his way to a dominant three round knockout. In those three rounds, Dempsey broke Willard’s nose, his jaw, several ribs and knocked out several of his teeth. Once fighters get that big, they tend to become awkward and slow and have little stamina. One last thing, the actress (Brigitte Nielsen) that played Drago’s wife was engaged to Stallone at the time of filming. They married shortly afterwards and starred in Cobra together. Cobra is a perfect example of a “so bad it’s good” film (that is, it’s so bad that’s it’s entertaining in ways never intended by its participants). Their marriage only lasted for a couple of years.
