Another classic Mel Brooks movie!

Wade Wallenstein

Happy Birthday Nanette! Not only am I glad you've seen this before but also seen Clue! Huge favorite of mine that I just watched a reaction to last week. I also love your Murder, She Wrote shirt! My Mother watched that often along with Matlock. "SEDAGIVE?!"

Harvey Lee

IT'S PRONOUNCED FROONK KEN STEEEN !!! Mel Brooks serves up another great comedy filmed wonderfully in Black and White and using some of the sets from the original Frankenstein Now i need to get some Ovaltine ready this evening ( Do i even have Ovaltine 🤔 in any case i know it's going to be great

Kevin Rubio

This is easily a top 3 comedy film for me, and one I love introducing to people. I was fortunate enough to attend the 20th anniversary screening of the film in Hollywood, at the Egyptian Theater. Mel, Terri, and Peter were in attendance as well as surviving crew members. Dustin Hoffman sat in front of me and as the lights were lowered he yelled out, "IS THIS MOVIE FUCKING GREAT, OR WHAT?!" The crowd erupted in screams and cheers, not knowing who the instigator was. A Q&A and reception was held afterwards. The most uttered phrase was, "sadly, they are no longer with us," and you could see how it effected Mel every time he said it. That was 32 years ago. He's the only one alive today. I met and spoke with Terri that night and confessed my life-long crush. She confided in me that day what the world would learn about a few years later, that she had MS. "Honestly I wasn't going to come tonight." "I'm so glad you did." "Me too." Then she gave me the best hug. Core memory right there. (Kinda crying right now) This was Mel at the top of his directing game, and Gene never wrote another script because he only wanted to do it if Mel asked him to. Here a video that was included in the DVD release. Enjoy. https://youtu.be/obzq9BZCRhY?si=GYHa2Ws5e17m3Td5

Kevin, what a fantastic memory! My eyes were tearing up as well! 🥹

Gene Wilder rants are the best😊

Thanks, Wade! I love Murder, She Wrote. I used to watch it with my mother all the time.

What a beautiful memory. Thank you for sharing this with all of us, Kevin. I imagine Terri was every bit as kind as I pictured her to be.

If you missed the note in the opening credits, all of the laboratory equipment is all from the original 1931 "Frankenstein." And in the opening scene, the bell peals 13 times. Gene Wilder agreed to do the movie on the condition that Mel Brooks promised not to appear in it; he felt that Brooks has a way of breaking the fourth wall that would ruin the illusion. As oxymoronic as it sounds, he wanted the film to be a serious comedy. But Brooks does make voice cameos as the cat that squeals during the dart game, and as the wolf heard howling on the journey to the castle. Igor's moving hump initially began as a joke; Marty Feldman had surreptitiously been moving it around before someone finally noticed. The "walk this way" scene inspired the Aerosmith song "Walk This Way." The gag of the horses whinnying at Frau Blucher's name, Cloris Leachman alleges, is because Mel Brooks told her that "Blucher" is the German word for "glue. It's actually a fairly common German surname, the way Smith or Jones is here in America. And when the Creature abducts Elizabeth, the reason she's singing "Battle Hymn of the Republic" is because it's in the public domain, so no copyright royalties were due to anyone.

This is some fantastic trivia, Tim. It makes the film even better. Now we know why the horses were so upset. 😂

Doug Bilodeau

I saw this with my (desperately-wanted-her-to-be) girlfriend on Valentine's Day 1975. Afterwards she indicated that we were now an official couple. We married six months later. The movie practically set the tone for our marriage. We used many movie lines in our conversation, but this one most of all. Maybe 20 lines we'd say frequently. If nothing else one could always mutter "Blucher!" and the other whinny.

Doug Bilodeau

Back in the day, I thought Blucher was a reference to the grim old Prussian General Blucher, who joined up with Wellington late in the battle of Waterloo. That made the defeat of Napoleon certain and ended his career forever. I liked to imagine that the horses in the movie were French.

Sorry I'm late to the party but Happy Bday Nan. I consider this to be one of the greatest comedies ever. I saw it upon the original release and knew it would be rewatchable . At that time Gene Hackman was uncredited. A great time as always ladies.

Hi ladies, this is probably a bit late but, many happy returns. Gotta love Gene Wilder, especially when he teams up with Richard Pryor. Also Terri Garr, she appeared in an episode of the original series Star Trek (Assignment Earth). She is also in my second favourite movie (Miracles) with Tom Conti and Christopher Lloyd. Christopher Lloyd also appears in my absolute favourite Movie, which I watch two or three times a year. Clue, as you say with Madeline Khan. Mr Lloyd also appears in a Star trek movie, you will have to watch them to see which one. Sorry for the ramble.

David

"I'd watch anything with Gene Wilder" "They should have a buddy comedy together - one of them can't see and the other can't speak" Close, there's a Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor comedy called See No Evil, Hear No Evil. Gene Wilder is deaf, Richard Pryor is blind.

Totally Whatever

We always appreciate your rambles ;) Not sure we have Miracles on our list- I'll double check and add it if we don't. Clue is Nanette's favorite too!
