Jack woke up before sunrise, drenched in the kind of silence that doesn’t belong to morning but to a moment of truth. The kind of silence your body makes when it’s about to confess something your mind is still trying to deny.
His first breath felt wrong.
No — not wrong.
Different.
Warmer. Deeper. Softer.
He sat up slowly, the sheets brushing against his skin with a sensitivity that made him gasp. Fabric shouldn’t feel that soft. It shouldn’t feel that… intentional. He ran his hands down his arms and froze.
His skin wasn’t the same as last night.
It felt silkier. Supple. Sensitive in a way that made him pull his hand back like he’d discovered someone else’s body under his palms.
“No… no, no…” he whispered, but even his voice cracked differently. Lighter around the edges. Breathier.
He rushed to the mirror.
And there it was.
Not a hallucination.
Not a trick of light.
Not a dream.
His face had shifted. Only slightly — but unmistakably.
The angles around his jaw had softened, as if someone had taken a sculptor’s thumb and smoothed the edges. His lashes looked fuller. His cheekbones had a subtle curve.
But the most shocking change wasn’t visible.
It was the feeling.
The quiet inside him.
The strange, fragile peace humming beneath fear.
He pressed his fingertips to his cheek, and a warm pulse rippled under the skin.
As if the body was answering a question he hadn’t asked out loud.
He stumbled away from the mirror, breathing fast. He grabbed a hoodie, pulled it tight, hiding everything — the skin, the curves forming beneath memory, the softening, the familiarity he didn’t want to admit.
He couldn’t let anyone see him like this.
He couldn’t let himself see him like this.
But as he walked toward the back door to get air, he felt it again — a shiver at the base of the spine, rising like a wave of quiet recognition.
A whisper passed through him.
“Don’t hide from yourself, Jack.”
He froze.
He didn’t turn around.
He didn’t have to.
The voice wasn’t coming from the house.
It was coming from inside the bones.
Inside the blood.
Inside the name he hadn’t dared speak.
He gripped the doorframe hard enough his knuckles whitened.
“I’m not ready…” he whispered.
The warmth in his chest answered gently:
“But I am.”
Something deep within him loosened — a knot he had been carrying since childhood, maybe longer. Something softened, expanded, filled.
He stepped outside, the morning air brushing his face differently — tenderly, almost affectionately — and he realized the truth he’d been trying to bury:
This shift wasn’t something happening to him.
It was something awakening within him.
And hiding wouldn’t stop it.
Hiding would only delay the moment he finally admitted—
He wasn’t losing himself.
He was uncovering her.
