Welcome to the latest episode of Past Games, a Patreon-exclusive monthly series that uncovers the histories of 2026's biggest and most consequential gaming anniversaries.

2026 is the 25th anniversary of Animal Crossing, though it's unlikely (to say the least) that you played the very first entry. Dōbutsu no Mori debuted in Japan on April 14, 2001, and Nintendo of Japan assumed, ahead of launch, that the "communication" game would never be localized for the United States.

Of course, we know things went differently. Years later, Animal Crossing debuted in the US and Europe on GameCube. Who convinced Nintendo to localize the quirky life-simulator? Why did Nintendo assume Western audiences wouldn't be interested? And how did a tiny team in Nintendo of America adapt the massive script for English-speaking audiences?

This episode has all the answers!

Today's guest is Kelsey Lewin. She is an author, a video game historian, and the co-owner of Pink Gorilla Games. You can hear on the wonderful podcast, Pew Pew Bang.

Kelsey is also a second-time guest on Post Games, first appearing way back in Episode 3 to talk about the history of Nintendo console launches and what it was like as a game store owner preparing for the release of Nintendo Switch 2.

Kelsey defies introductions because she’s done so much. For example, she previously served as co-director of the Video Game History Foundation. And in 2024, she published the first substantial English-language history book on the original Animal Crossing.

I’d read her book at release, but recently listened to the excellent audiobook edition and was surprised all over again by the magical way this series came together, beginning with inspiration from the last video game you’d expect.

But I won’t spoil that.

Adored this episode! Really loving anything along the lines of “the history of” and “how such and such came to be” and “how this game almost didn’t happen.” Had a bit of a laugh when y’all were discussing the much more ambitious version of the game that was inspired by Diablo, because I thought to myself “oh that’s would have been the real first Strand Game™️” To hear those words actually come up was a funny moment. I want to echo the idea that AI integration into games like this would really take away from them (I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir, but ya know). Having a polished, yes-man experience that inevitably comes with chat bots would 100% detract from the wonderfully authored “poison cute” vibe that Animal Crossing already has less and less of. I just want to experience what developers and writers are trying to convey. I don’t need infinite possibilities that all feel the same. Thanks again for this bonus ep! Every day I am grateful for the small, smart, and funny community surrounding this podcast!

This was so fantastic. My first AC game was actually City Folk on the Wii, so it's fascinating to hear about some of the history around the original and what birthed such a unique series!

Great listen, as always! Just a small heads up that the Gregory Horror Show link has a typo in it :)

"Twice as interesting as a Kirby game" is so offensive to my sensibilities. I am clutching my pearls! Lol jk I just checked it out and she's probably right. And I'm an insane Kirby fan.

This will be the second book I buy because of this podcast. ❤️
