Free Game of the Week: Nioh 3 Demo

I’m including this demo because, whatever your opinion of the gameplay, the included sequence does what a good demo should: help you decide whether to buy the full game. Trust me when I say your reaction to its ending boss fight will either be “I adore this!” or “Why does it hate me? I will never play past this absurdly difficult skill check!”

Such a cool episode! I don’t think I’ve seen coverage of this game anywhere else, and it’s such a great idea!

Nathaniel Jams

Loved this episode, Ben and Mohale were such a fun and thoughtful interview pair. Also, I really hadn't even begun to think of how the Epstein Files figure into video games and the seediest parts of video game culture, but I really appreciate Nathan Grayson and Aftermath are advancing the conversation.

Robert Secundus

a handful of addenda on the Epstein conversation (which I thought was great, as was the rest of the episode!): Epstein also associated with the founder of 4chan and met with him the day before he created /pol, which is instrumental in the whole gamergate story (as is Maxwell being, apparently, one of the most influential redditors of all time). Bannon too has his own weird gaming connections (as a WoW gold farmer), but the figure most important to the discussion in this episode is Andrew Breitbart, and specifically his "Breitbart Doctrine." Bannon was a true believer in this doctrine, as apparently was Epstein, that "Politics is downstream from culture." Whether it's gamergate, QAnon, talk radio, Joe Rogan, 4chan, 8chan, and so on and so forth, the project of Epstein's circle was, in part, to move our culture to the right, that they might be better able to control it (and thus our politics). We don't need to say things like "Epstein invented microtransactions" or "Epstein did gamergate" to recognize this broad project and to be increasingly cautious, moving forward, of seemingly grassroots right wing cultural campaigns. There might be thousands of men angry that Sophie Turner is Laura Croft, or there might be a couple of guys paying for thousands of bots, because they think it'd be politically useful for there to be young men angry that Sophie Turner is Laura Croft.

This was such a good episode. I love your interview style, and the devs of relooted had some really great things to say. I also appreciated the bonus interview - the connection between epstein stuff and gamergate IS a connection that doesn't need any red yarn. As someone who grew up very much online I've felt the creeping dread, and all these revelations have felt obvious for so long. Thanks for continuing to shine your light on this stuff.

Directional Joy

I plan on playing the game, if it ever hits consoles (not a PC gamer). The chemistry/dynamic of Chris and son/mother had me laughing out loud multiple times. She is a treasure (with some sharp edges, lol) and her son ain’t too bad. 😉

Loved this episode, immediately bought the game after the first two segments. Such a great interview! Also I really enjoyed learning about African futurism vs Afrofuturism

Josh Nichols

Just listened to this episode and went to youtube to learn more about the game and holy moly is that a cesspool! Really wishing I could block youtube channels. What happened after Relooted launched? That would make a good podcast episode. I'll prob buy the game and play it this weekend.
