Welcome to the Q&A for May 2023. It's a Mandalorian May baby!! We finally sit down and talk Season 3 of The Mandalorian. Does Din Djarin's side quest arc satisfy? Does Grogu's continued baby-voice cutie pie factor delight or distract? And how about them droids???

I DON'T KNOW WHY THIS IMAGE OF MARTHA MAY WHOVIER IS SO LARGE I APOLOGiZE!!!!!!!!!! okay enjoy the pod :•)

Ian Farrell

It’s large because she’s important. It suites her stature.

Eddie

Is it reccomend that we watch Mando season 3 before listening? I enjoyed the boba and obi wan episodes without seeing the full shows, so if it’s not good I might just save the time.

Chachisvase76

She's just a representative of all of us, just like her we love the green freak

SpillboBaggins

Are we going to get a Visions episode down the line? I feel like this season's shorts were, on average, stronger than the last one.

Maxwell Brown

The way Rob describes the scale of the sequel trilogy has always been how I've thought of it. The first order isn't the empire, it's a rag tag group of fringe weirdos complying warlord, everything works better if it's a smaller scale, and it feels less like it's Undoing everything that happened up to that point.

Maura Razoe

haven't finished yet but i just wanna point out that the mando's DID participate in the battle of exogol. Naboo sent ships too

Nick Carson

Bo Katan is Doc Rivers lmfao

A sudden absence of bees

Ugh, this droid stuff is making me depressed. They better let K-2 unleash on some nazis in Andor season 2

Bungerklaus

I really really feel like they wanted the show to move on from Baby Yoda at the end of season 2 and some higher up decided it was too marketable and profitable to not keep around.

Ben Hower

I'm here for the growing podcast thread of all the star wars stuff Natalie is buying now 😅 Reference books, lego sets, lightsabers... can't wait to hear what's next

Austin Bridges

I also really despised how often the conflict for an episode stemmed from "and now some nasty bad guys/a monster just shows up" that had nothing to do with any thematic conflict with the characters. Just such a complete lack of interest or writing ability from Favreau to engage with ideas in this show.

Coreyyy

Wheres that instagram reel link? lol

Paul Richards

I'm pretty sure Jedi training is a pyramid scheme. Luke and Rey didn't need extensive training. Grogu seems to be doing okay. Hated that Din bought R5-D4. I get Easter eggs, but come one....

Paul Richards

Loved Austin including Cleopatra 2525 in his shoutout of Xena-likes.

Seb

been operating in "mandalorian is just Favreau and Filonis table top game made into a tv show" and just felt it come full circle when Austin points out why that doesn't work with season 3. It worked for the first like season and a half but yeah totally with them on it

Pazuzu

In December 2001 we had a school assembly where we all got together and had a moment of silence for 9/11 and then we watched the Jim Carrey Grinch

Maura Razoe

Thank you thank you thank you thank you Austin for pointing out how awful Thrawn's "power" is.

Joshua Hart

It's fucking wild to me how awfully the droid workers were treated in episode 6. It goes from the usual 'droids are kinda like people but we won't really examine why we let them be slaves' straight into a 30's pulp noir story that's trying to be progressive but is just racist in a different vein. 'look at this strange service race that works to keep our city running. Recently they've been acting up and doing dangerous things in strange incidents involving them working! Let's go harass some dock workers of their group and see what comes up. After assaulting multiple dock workers one had the audacity to swing back, then ran for it. We shot him in the street though, and found a matchbook to a secret club their group runs. They told us about the secret drink this group loves, and examining it in the dead droid we found it was poisoned, which is why they've been acting all uppity! those droids didn't want to rebel, they were forced to by a secret old confederate who wants to go back to the good old days!' just fucking insane to lean into a rancid vibe.

qwaemor

Okay but wasn’t that opener with the moncalamari and quarran literally prince lee from the derided Clone Wars ep?? I thought it was more than a nod and a literal cameo. I could’ve sworn they say his name at one point

Greg Hodgson-Fopp

Did you guys do Season 1 & 2? I couldn't find it in patreon or the normal feed....

Rasmus Löb

You didn’t mention my favourite droid bit of the season which was that because Luke in A New Hope says “This droid has a bad motivator” about R5-D4, his whole thing in this show was that he can’t be arsed to do what people tell him to.

Julian Gamble

Love you guys. This was hilarious. Can you please enable RSS in patreon? (So the Q&A can go to my podcast app - and I don't have to play it on the web page).

lovebug

my favorite bit is the absolute refusal to use any of the elaborate language or cultural bits that’s been established in the eu like those songs from rep com are so good we couldn’t even have one drop of mandalorian language .

Connor O'Brien

People going to space inexplicably? Themes established earlier in the show being ignored completely? Is this Star Wars's Gundam SEED???

Brita Dorfman

It should already be enabled, I’ve been using a podcast app for amca Patreon the entire time it’s existed.

civilized

We have not covered Season 1 or 2 just yet!

Genevieve Ellerbee

I know it’s more exciting but I would have been so mad if Axe Wolf has died. There are big windows and he has a jet pack! Put a rock on the gas pedal and get out!

Shannon Benjamin

I was so excited there was a droid bar but then ….. like can we ever get some droids chilling , doing down time droid shit? I need it lol

atb432000

FWIW I think Din Djarin’s last name comes first because that’s how it was in his culture of origin, not because Mandalorians do it that way. (But also I think that’s a post hoc decision because “Din Grogu” sounds better than “Grogu Djarin”)

Molly Weinberger

I don't think it's a fair criticism of the trilogy's writing to say Thrawn's art history powers are problematic when it's explicit that his racist arrogance and dismissal of the Noghri is literally what gets him killed.

present

Can you please please please post the instagram reel? Or screencaps of it? I need to see Korkie

TheOtherWolverine

For some reason the episode isn't showing up in the Pocket Cast feed

Brita Dorfman

I heard a rumor (which I’m not sure is true) that the reason Din is barely in this season is because Pedro Pascal was busy filming Last of Us. Which would explain a lot of…

Michael Bowman

Bloodlines is set 20 years after RotJ. The Mandalorian season 1 is set 5 years after RotJ. To learn more about politics in the early New Republic (within the first year after RotJ) you can check out Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath trilogy and Alexander Freed’s Alphabet Squadron trilogy

Susurrus

I thought the same thing. Or maybe they called him prince? I was convinced while watching the show that he was literally Prince Lee

Susurrus

Just a little bummed that there was no mention of Kelleran Beq. I do agree there were too many characters to keep track of, but still…

qwaemor

Me too! All Growed Up

MythicalMothman

Gotta mention, Axe's ship isn't a star destroyer, it's an Arquitens light cruiser (Gideon's ship in season 2 that Din promised to Bo-Katan). The camera acts like it's this hulking ship but it's tiny compared to an ISD (like 300m vs 1600m). Every time characters in this show are like "whoah great fleet" I had to laugh because one Arquitens, two Gozanti freighters, and a handful of fighters is NOT an impressive fleet, haha! Would be supremely outclassed by the rebel fleet in Rogue One.

Alternatively, you can stick your hand in a garbage disposal and turn it on and enjoy yourself much more than you will reading Wendig’s books

Dennis Groome

Can we get links for show notes?

Zach G

One little note - The attack on the pirates happens in episode 5, before they recruit AXE WOVES' group and the big ship. Also did y'all totally skip over my boy Ahmed Best??? Or did I sleep through part of this episode

EJ Crough

Towards the end, when Austin was talking about pointing out how when you begin to point out logical inconsistencies the story itself has failed to pull you in. That’s a good point 👍 it’s something I’ve thought about for a long time but never been able to put so simply.

Laurence Turner-Cordova

A little bummed to not hear y’all discuss the Kelleran Beq Order 66 scene. One of the best scenes of the season imo; it was great to see our man Ahmed get his flowers. Great episode though y’all!

Jeff

Awesome episode, I really enjoy listening to everyone's ideas and commentary. Keep at it and thanks for the banter.

Verdigree

Maybe the way we finally get past the time period they don't want to touch around Abrahm's final movie, is we let Grogu grow up, have some 10 or 25-year increments pass by, Dinn becomes a sweet old man he eventually outlives, and the Galaxy recovers into something new

Verdigree

The Mandalorians COULD have become the Roegadyn Sea Wolves from the award-winning MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV Online, who are a culture who transition from being pirates to a city-state thallasocracy that becomes the engine of a LOT of stories about how Limsa Lominsa is in some ways the MOST fucked up, and in other ways, the LEAST of Eorzea's three starting cities

Verdigree

Maybe the way to move forward with the problem of Grogu is make him not the only puppet around, bearing the Atlas-like burden of cutness, put him on the Yoda planet, make a Jim Henson The Dark Crystal type show that's all puppets, get rid of the human actors and he's no longer the odd one out who needs to be the cute relief
