Hi everyone,

For July’s painting challenge, we’re painting a vase with leaves.

The reference photo, taken by Stocksnap from Pixabay, is attached along with a line drawing for you to download.

I loved the milkshake paintings you did for last month's challenge- they were so good!!

Don’t forget that July is World Watercolor Month and if you share a painting on social media - tag it with #WorldWatercolorMonth.

Painting on your own, without a tutorial, has lots of advantages. It helps you find and develop your own style. You'll get better at solving problems and really sharpen your eye for details like light, shadow, and colour transitions. Plus, there's nothing quite like the feeling of finishing a painting all by yourself - it’s such a confidence booster. It also pushes you to experiment more, leading to some exciting and unexpected artistic discoveries.

Feel free to share your finished paintings in the chat area on Patreon, or, if you're a member of our Facebook group or Discord group, you can post them there. Don’t worry about it - we’re all learning and growing as artists at our own pace. If your painting doesn’t come out the way you wanted and you’re not sure about sharing it, that’s totally fine. Have fun- that's all that matters.

This is interesting! I gained some confidence painting glass with the milkshake, now another chance to practice! And leaves are always a challenge for me, for some unknown reason. Gonna start this one today!

Debbie Nicoll

I’m new. What size should we print line drawings?.

Louise De Masi

Hi Debbie, print them to correspond with the size of the paper you plan to use. I think it's easier to paint if it's not too small. I wouldn't paint on paper any smaller than A4 size (11.7 inches by 8.3 inches).

Jane Ashworth

I can’t find your current FB or how do I get Discord?

Louise De Masi

Hi Jane, Dom here. Have a look at your welcome message from Louise. All the details are in the message. :-)

Barbara Constant

This question is outside this challenge, hope that its ok if i ask if you are going to do a tutorial on the blog you did on Daniel Smith Watercolor Rose of Ultramarine. I absolutely loved the rose you painted. thanks

Louise De Masi

Thank you Barbara. I won't be making a tutorial of that one I'm sorry. It was a pleasure painting I did over several weeks and I didn't film it all - just bits and pieces of it for an Instagram reel. I'm currently working on some new floral tutorials.

I just joined a few days ago. I am new to watercolor, and only been using oil and or acrylic for about a year. I am a late aspiring artist, lol, as I am 73. I love to paint! I just finished this July challenge, and I had so much fun! Thank you, Louise, for causing me to try watercolor! Betty

Louise De Masi

Welcome again Betty! That's wonderful and that's what it is all about- having fun. ❤️

What do you use to clean your brushes while you are painting a subject?

Kelly Halligan
