Hi everyone,

In this two part tutorial, we'll paint a vibrant octopus with a loose, splashy watercolour background to represent the water.

Using only four colours from my new Schmincke palette, I'll walk you through how to build depth and contrast with simple techniques. For those using Daniel Smith or Winsor & Newton paints, I’ve included colour substitutions in the supplies list.

We’ll work with both wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques to layer up rich colours and natural textures.

To create highlights, I’ll demonstrate how to use an eradicator brush on dry paper, perfect for bringing out those key details.

Finally, a touch of pan pastel enhances the highlights and adds a subtle glow to finish off the painting.

Been trying to paint a particular octupus for 4 years, and I've failed every time. Really excited to give this one a go!

Peiying

The moment I saw the octopus, I said to myselt I must give it a try. It's only natural that we use watercolor to paint an aquatic subject. I really appreciate you taking the time to discuss how you approach the subject, composition, simplification color selection, contrast, and when to follow the reference and when to be creative - full of tips and sage advice throughout the tutorials. It was quite challenging to paint a "fluid" subject but I'm happy with the result even though certain areas are overly done, I learned a lot. Thank you so much Louise!!

Louise De Masi

Thank you for your kind words Peiying! I'm so glad you enjoyed the octopus tutorial and found it both challenging and rewarding. It sounds like you’ve learned a lot! ❤️

I love the background of this painting. I enjoy very much painting everything related with the ocean. This painting is so beautiful. I’m going to pain it. To be honest, I will skip some of the detail since I like them more simplistic. Hopefully it looks as nice as yours. I’ve been painting for 4 years now. Trying to find my artistic style. Painting things that I like. I started at 58 years old. I found a passion painting watercolor. Your lessons are very easy to understand and follow, explaining every detail that we need to pay attention to. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I’m very grateful to have found you. Your style is as close as I want to paint. Thank you again!

Louise De Masi

Hi Cristina, Thank you.so much. Definitely simplify the details if that’s what feels right to you. That’s how you start shaping your own style. Four years in, and starting at 58, that’s great! t’s never about when you begin, only that you do. I’m so glad the lessons are helping you. I can’t wait to see your octopus.
