I enjoyed this tutorial very much and appreciate the time you took putting this series of videos together. It was a therapeutic painting after stressful days of work! :) Thank you Louise!

Robyn

Thank you for the technique tute. Much appreciated. Cheers, Robyn .

Thank you. Going to treat myself to painting day tomorrow! Hydrangea or bust!

Julia Bos

Oh ohhh i do not have the ultramarine violet.

Julia Bos

and i have the winsor blue red shade... is there an alternative for the ultramarine violet?

Louise De Masi

Hi Julia, Welcome! Do you have Winsor Violet or Imperial Purple?

Patti Kehl

Dear Louise, I have just completed painting the Hydrangea painting. I found I wrestled with the same problem from the very first petal to the very last petal. I don’t know if you will be able to help me but I would like to see if I can explain if that is ok. : ) First – when I applied a watery layer of paint to a petal and then with a damp brush attempted to soften the edges I found either my damp brush was too dry and didn’t want move the line of paint or in some cases it “drank up” the paint I had just applied. Secondly when adding a second color to a petal I had a similar problem when the second color drank up the first color or else created a bloom. I know it is a tall order but is there a way for you to help me without seeing what I am doing wrong? If not I will just have to fly to Australia!! Heeheehee Thank you so very much for your amazing tutorials!! And for any help you can offer. Patti

Louise De Masi

Hi Patti, Lol....that sounds like a great idea! I know it's difficult to describe what's happening in words and it's difficult for me to tell you what you might be doing wrong without watching you. 1st- if your damp brush is too dry and not softening the paint edge- that's easy - make the brush more damp. It could also be that you've taken too long and the paint is starting to dry. I'm not sure what's going on with the' drank up the paint'. That sounds like your brush is acting like a sponge. If you're having watercolour bloom problems it's because the paint and paper starts to dry and it gets to the 'dangerous' stage where if you put water or paint on the paper near the dry area then you create a bloom. If you haven't already, have a look at my 'paper wetness' technique video and also the 'watercolour bloom' technique video. You'll find them on my index on my website here: http://www.louisedemasi.com/new-index scroll down and you'll see them. It sounds like you're having water problems. One thing you could try is to wet your paper where you want to work, let it almost dry then wet it again. Then paint on it. That way the paint will go deeper into into the layers of the paper and you'll be less likely to disturb it. I demonstrate that method of wetting the paper twice in the Koala tutorial. You could also be having problems because of the paper you're using. A lot of papers act differently.

hafsa26 .

It may also be the brush, some of my synthetic brushes never get wet enough and always act like a sponge, no matter how much I wet my brush.

hello louise, what can I use instead of magenta, which I do not have. Will alizarin do instead?

Louise De Masi

Hi Patricia, You could try it on a scrap piece of paper first. Paint the other colors onto the scrap piece of paper that you are using as well and see how Alizarin looks with them. You may need to add a small amount of blue into your Alizarin. Play around with your colours. The colours themselves aren't as important as the colour value- meaning how dark or how light you put them on the paper.

Tiphanie

Hello ! I don't have magenta nether and I used purple lake (winsor and newton).

Tiphanie

I'm so happy to finish this painting !!! I will take a photo to show it on instagram and then offer it to my german parrain that I love !

I am on my 3rd try at this painting. I have definitely improved my technique but what I learned most is that I have to buy better paper for better results. :-)

Vee

This is the umteenth time I watch these 3 tutorials and I still cannot get over how much detail and care you put into each stroke of your brush. You are absolutely amazing! I want to do this, but know that I am not ready by far, but soon I am going to try this - hydrangeas are one of my very favourites. Thank you once again for you very detailed instructions and your endless patience.

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Vee. I think it's a great idea for you to watch the more difficult tutorials even if your skill level isn't at that stage and you don't attempt the painting. You will learn just by watching. 💕

Angela Walker

Louise! Help! On the Patreon site I can only find Video 1 and 3 of the hydrangea tutorial. I've looked at video 3 to see if I can 'catch up' from it, but I've missed too much. What do you suggest?

Angela Walker

Oh, I see it now. Thanks so much. I wasn't looking forward to 'winging it'.

Kathy Binns

I thoroughly enjoyed this exercise even though it was extremely difficult for me. I have to stop fiddling with my painting now and leave it alone! I think my paint shades were slightly different than yours or my printer does not print the true colours (quite likely). Thanks

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Kathy. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you.
