In case you haven't seen it, I uploaded this beginner's tip video to YouTube this week. I talk about watercolour blooms and how they might appear in your washes without you understanding how they got there. I demonstrate and talk about how to avoid them if you don't want them in your work.  I happen to love watercolour blooms so I also demonstrate how I create them deliberately in many of my paintings. I think they are one of the beautiful qualities that are unique to painting in watercolour.

Bobba

Such helpful advice. I realise I was applying while the paper was still wet. Reading the comments it appears others were as well. I am keen to try again.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Bobba. Wait until the sheen goes off the paper to drop extra water in. The water dislodges the drying pigment creating those beautiful blooms.

Watercolor blooms are my favorite!! 💞

Robyn

Hi Louise, i do like too use blooms in my paintings also, but as i am still learning it is great to see how to create a controlled affect. Thank you for this tutorial.

Jahl

Yep love them, especially in backgrounds. Thanks for all the tips.

Nicole Butzen

Thank you Louise for the very instuctive video. I've always hated cauliflowers. Now I know how to use them to my advantage.

Louise De Masi

I'm so glad Nicole! When you can put them where you want them, I think they really enhance your painting.

Lydia Shemain

Thank you for this priceless instruction Louise. Not only are you a BEAUTIFUL painter but an AMAZING teacher. Thanks for sharing your expertise in such detail. ❤️u.

Laura Darcy

Very helpful Louise, I especially appreciated seeing how the blooms were used in some of your paintings! I’ll remember this ! Laura

Nancy Johnson

How do you fix a bloom you don't want?

Louise De Masi

Hi Nancy, It's not easy and you can't always do it but if you wait until it's dry you might be able to use a damp brush (with water) over the top and soften the pigment again and move it where you want it, dab it with a tissue etc. You might be lucky and be able to minimise or even remove it.

Karen Brodsky

I love blooms and enjoyed this video very much. My challenge seems to be seeing the sheen on the paper. The lightning never seems right or enough to see it and judge it’s readiness for making a bloom. My vision is fine. Any lighting tips?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Karen. I use an LED desk lamp but I have to change position when I want to view the sheen on the paper. I'll stand up and bend down and move my eyes down level with the paper to see it. Sometimes I'll pick the painting up and hold it at eye level with a window behind it to be able to see the sheen. I can rarely judge it properly just be looking down at it.

Karen Brodsky

Thanks so much. I will give this a try (or as you say in Australia - I’ll give it a go!) I really appreciate what I’m learning from you in the tutorials, from the Facebook exchanges, and your accessibility when there are questions.

Cathy Neely

This was very helpful! I love the texture that occurs with the blooms! I understand now how they occur accidentally and what you showed us to avoid them. Thank you!

Vicki Falsgraf

I just re-watched this video, and it's really helpful. I hope I can also find a video of yours explaining how to get rid of them where I don't want them.

Louise De Masi

I'm glad it was helpful. Thanks Vicki. That's a follow up video I can make.

Richard Williams
