Hi everyone,

I'm parking this video here for the beginners amongst us. It's one I created for YouTube. It has some valuable tips for newbie watercolourists.

If you’re just starting to paint in watercolour then this video will help you to understand how to make and adjust soft and hard edges. This is a very important element of painting in watercolour. Creating a balance between hard and soft edges can help you to create successful watercolour paintings. I show you how to soften watercolour edges that you've made on dry paper and also how to correct edges that have dried darker than you wanted them to be.

I have a Featured Tag on the 'Posts' page of Patreon called 'Beginners Tips'. If you click on that all the beginner tips videos will be listed for you.

Very lovely video! Thank you!

Thank you! This video was so helpful, especially when you show the sample and the. how the technique is applied in your paintings. For the Arches paper, do you tend to use 140 or 300 pound weight?

Louise De Masi

Hi Michelle. Thank you. I use both 140 and 300. I always stetch the 140 before I use it. Sometimes when I know I'm going to work quite wet I'll stretch the 300 too. The 300 will get a bow/bend in it if I don't.

Michelle Wainer

Thank you. I watched your video on stretching. Still intimidating, but maybe once I am more practiced. I have been using block pads.

Louise, do you have colour swatches that you have made and keep on hand for reference? Or do you just remember what colours you generally want?

Louise De Masi

I don't make colour swatches myself. I have colour dot charts from Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton but I mainly use them when somebody asks me for a substitute colour suggestion.

Louise, I've been practicing how to soften edges. Sometimes it seems to push the paint backwards and it forms an even harder edge. I can't figure out if it's too much water or not enough. Also sometimes it's like it lifts the paint completely off. Perhaps some of this is also cheap paint and paper?

Louise De Masi

Hi Susan, You might have too much water on your brush when it pushes the paint back. You might be creating a watercolour bloom with it. It could also be your paper. You've inspired me to do another video that focuses entirely on softening paint edges. There's a definite technique to it that requires practice. Leave it with me and I'll see if I can make an entire video devoted to it.
