Hi everyone,

I hope you’re having a good week. I’ve been very busy! I painted the crow (version 1) painting last week and I wasn’t 100% happy with it. There was a group of feathers that I struggled with and I just couldn’t get them the way I wanted them. I had a vision of what I wanted them to look like in my head and I thought I’d be able to paint it but the paint had other ideas. Nevertheless, I started editing the tutorial over the weekend and then on Monday I kept going with it. On Tuesday I woke up, took another look at my painting and I decided to abandon it and paint another. Yes, I’m a glutton for punishment.

So I spent all day Tuesday painting this second version of the crow and then I had to start this new tutorial.

So without further ado here is Part 1 of the Crow Tutorial.

This beautiful crow landed on a fence when I was in a park in Sydney. I was there photographing ducklings and when I saw the crow I quickly abandoned the ducklings and got a few shots of him before he flew away.

All of the files you need are attached below.

Part 2 of the Crow Tutorial is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/32094137

This tutorial is suitable for intermediate to advanced painters.

Techniques include:

# Wet on wet work

# Softening edges

# Glazing colours

# Liner brush work

I hope you enjoy it. 💜

Cici

What brand of wc board do you use? Thanks.

susan

I am i the process of painting the crow but am confused because of the fluffy (for want of a better work) bit at the front. I see its on the reference photos but I thoughtmaybe ustralian crows were a bit different from those in N Ireland but no the chest area is quite smooth. I guess this was just quite a scruffy crow!

Annika

Thank you for another wonderful tutorial!! I just love it!! Bird are my favourites!!💞💗

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Annika. Thank you! I hope you enjoy it.

Julie Miller

I'm SO happy you decided to paint a crow and make a tutorial of it! It's my favorite bird and I can't wait to get started!

Denise Jay

Thank you for another beautiful bird tutorial!

Patricia Teal

Yay! I am stoked to do this tutorial! Thanks for all the hard work you put into your Patreon Louise! You're the best!!

Jacinthe Boudreau

Wonderful painting.....I’ve just finished watching the full tutorial.....so relaxing to watch and very professionally done. Was is done on 140 pounds CP or 300 pounds Hot pressed?

Louise De Masi

Hi Jacinthe, thank you! I used the cold pressed watercolour board I have here. It's unavailable now unfortunately. As far as I know Arches isn't making it anymore. I have quite a few sheets here at home that I want to use up. I always stretch 300gsm (140lb) paper. If you use the heavier paper 300lb you probably don't need to stretch it.

Zarah McIntosh

Oh man. I love the colors in the black feathers. I've always wondered how to represent that sheen I see. So excited to do this one.

Shelly Solle

Can’t wait to get home from vacation to paint this!!

Debra Sullivan

This video is mesmerizing. So beautiful. It'll be easy to watch more than just once.

Desert Morning

Absolutely fascinating color work. I'll be working on this for quite a while. Wonderful lesson.

Anki Johansson

Do you draw your drawing lines on freehand?

Louise De Masi

Hi Anki. Not very often no. I'm usually in too much of a hurry to start painting. I usually use saral paper to transfer the drawing/ photograph on. Then once it's on there I'll sit and make alterations by hand if I need to. Right now I'm working on a zebra. I transferred the drawing on with saral paper but there are some stripes that I missed so I'm correcting it by hand before I start painting.

Anki Johansson

Thank you, I’m not a good drawer so I prefer to use the Saral transfer paper. But my sister think that I’m sheeting by not drawing by my self, but I prefer to do it like this, otherwise I could not paint at all🤣❤️

Marijke de Boer

My fingers are itching to do this beauticul crow. Thank you so much:) I just come back from travels and am keen to get started again!

Debra Sullivan

I have a question, to which the answer is likely staring me in the face (sorry), but I can’t remember which patreon tier I joined last month. I thought I could deduce it by checking my credit card but for some reason it shows the same amount ($8.22) was charged twice on the same day (Nov. 12, ‘19). That amount doesn’t seem to correspond to any figure on your patreon page, so I’m a bit puzzled. I’m only asking because I’d like access to the Graded Wash and Back Run tutorials andd I think I need to update my membership to include them. I did look at the “Your Membership” tab, but couldn’t find the information there either. Anywhere you could direct me to would be very appreciative. Thank you, Louise.

Debra Sullivan

At the 3:38 mark, (right before the "page turning" effect) the crow's head is a fairly uniform shade of light violet, but, immediately following (at 3:39) the next shot we see, shows that the upper right part of the crow's head is a darker shade than anywhere else. Is that right or is it just a trick of lighting? If it is right, should I paint that part darker, too? Thanks so much!

Louise De Masi

Hi Debra, I've just had a look at the video. I didn't put any more paint there, that's how it dried. I put some water droplets in there to disturb the pigment and it dried like that. Just go with what you have. Thanks!

Debra Sullivan

Sorry, I asked too quickly. After following a few more minutes I saw that it wouldn't matter at all. I'm very happy how mine turned out! Thank you.

Darlene Smith

I really like your Crow. Am wondering about your use of Lamp Black in lieu of your own black mix. You are the first artist I have come across who uses black paint from the tube. I'm just learning so am curious.

Louise De Masi

Hi Darlene, thank you! I don't use a lot of Lamp Black. I mainly use it on animal/bird pupils more than anything else. I do use it however when I paint crows and zebras because I need a lot of it then and I use so many other colours with the black that its easier to use Lamp Black than it is to mix one. I put different colours underneath it when I paint with it to lift it because it can be flat and lifeless looking on its own. Sometimes I'll put it onto the wet paper and I'll charge it with other colours while it's wet (drop other colours into it).

Isatys09

Loved, loved loved every part of this tutorial. I had a fantastic time following you along and although birds are not my favorite subject (damn feathers :) this crow is one of my "best" result. It is now framed and hanging in my study!

Louise De Masi

That's so good! Thank you for letting me know. 💕

Noemi

Not sure I have mentioned but I just love that you started doing the supply list in pdf files. I don't have word MS and it was always a hassle to print it. Thank you so much. As always, you are way ahead of the game.

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Noemi. It's no problem at all. Remind me if I ever forget. 💕

Alison Hendry

I love this painting with its blues and blacks etc and love to paint birds so want to give it a go; however, I think I am a bit of a dope with the technical part of downloading the image. Is it possible to compress it somehow so I can print it or do I download and then compress?

Louise De Masi

Eek!....I'm not good with technology questions Alison. Do you have to compress it to print it? I download it and print it. If you do have to compress it I'm guessing you compress it after you download it by right clicking on it once it's on your computer. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thomas Robb

Hi there, loving that you include a pic of the photo as you paint. Helps me so much in seeing where you are and where you are heading.

Leone Middleton

This was the tutoral for me, as a learning experience. I was able to use darklines

Deborah Mary Rose

Hi Louise. I’m just watching this video in preparation for starting this painting. I could be wrong, but it seems that the size of the crow you use in the demonstration video is larger than the line drawing you have provided above? Would it be possible for you to attach a larger scan of the drawing, perhaps in two sheets? I would enlarge myself, but I don’t have that capability on my printer. Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Deborah, I've just uploaded a line drawing split over two pages so that should help you. I upload the line drawings at the size that I scan them at - so the original size of my paintings but something happens to the size in the uploading / downloading process. Have fun with it. Thanks!

Carol Crawford Barfield

Hi Louise! Did you use 140 lb. paper or 300 lb. paper? I'm just wondering if I need to stretch my paper for this one, as it doesn't look like you used staples and brown gum tape. Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Carol, I think this is watercolour board so it's really thick and doesn't need to be stretched. I would definitely stretch 140lb paper if you are using that. You'll probably be ok if you use 300lb without stretching but you might get a slight bow in the paper. I usually do so I have been known to stretch 300lb paper too.

Carol Crawford Barfield

Hi Louise! Have you found a brand of watercolor board you like and recommend? I'd like to try it. Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Carol, Maybe Daler Rowney Langton boards I'd buy again but that's all. I painted the Budgerigar painting tutorial on it so have a look at that if you want to see it in action.

Candace

Hi Louise..I just did the crow. Wow black is a hard color to paint with. But I managed lol. Loved this tutorial :)

Louise De Masi

Hi Candace. Great- I'm glad. Yes it is. It can be quite flat looking. I try to enliven it with other colours if ever I use it.

Khushnam Patel

Hi Louise, it’s been such a pleasure watching the crow tutorial. I love crows especially house crows and pegions. They are the birds of my home country. I was wondering if you could make a tutorial on pegions, with their rainbow coloured throats. It would make a lovely accompaniment to the crow.Thank you

Louise De Masi

Hi Khushnam, thank you very much. I'll keep a look out for a good reference photo. Thank you for the suggestion.

Céli Maria Rondoni

Hi, Louise, all the way from Brazil. Autumn is finally here, thanks a lot! This past Summer was a bit to much for me and I hope you endured a less hot one ;D I´m thinking about start the crow tutorial and I´m wondering: What you think about using Daniel Smith Moonglow instead of Lamp Black? Moonglow is also transparent and it has already the beautifull violet and blue tint in it. It also granulates, quality I absolutely love! Maybe granulation was the reason you didn´t use it? I noticed you always use French Ultramarine, one I´m aware doens´t granulate. Any advice against it? Thanks a lot for your kindness. I love all your Tutorials. I started following you in Skilshare 2 years ago,I leaved for a long time and now I started all over here again. So glad! Those last 2 years have been really crazy and to me, you´re like a beacon of tranquility amidst all these. Thank you a lot :-x

Louise De Masi

Hi Celi, thank you very much. I've never used Moonglow myself but I looked it up on Google and I think it would be good to try. Maybe do a smaller study first and see what you think.

Sónia Natividade

Hello Louise i hope you and your family are well. I love birds and animals and i painted the crow or at least i tryed to :) hope you like it . Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Sonia, thank you- we are well. I hope you and yours are too.

D. Todd

I don't mean to be picky, but I'm wondering if this is a raven. I know it doesn't matter as far as the beautiful painting goes, but a friend asked for a raven painting, and when I started researching, it just seemed like this might be a raven.

Ruth Davis

I am now on my second one also. Lol just wasn't happy.
