Hi everyone,

Here is Part 1 of the Bald Eagle tutorial.

Here is Part 2 of the Bald Eagle tutorial: https://www.patreon.com/posts/32930368

This tutorial is for the more experienced painters. I used quite a few different techniques including:

# working wet on wet

# working wet on dry

# combining loose abstract marks with high detail

# salt wash

# negative painting

All of the files you need are attached below.

I have included a larger A3 size line drawing spread over two pages for those who have difficulty enlarging it.

The reference photo was fom Pixabay https://pixabay.com/photos/eagle-nature-bird-wild-raptor-714432/. I have also included the link for you to download it on the Supplies list. I feel more comfortable if you download it yourself from Pixabay rather than me supplying it to you. If you want to donate a 'coffee' to the photographer that allows you to do so.

Here is the link to my paper stretching video: https://www.patreon.com/posts/31443575

Enjoy!

Eagles are magnificent -- and you've captured the regal quality of this eagle! I absolutely loved painting him. The blues and purples and rich browns were so much fun to paint. I'm hoping to try it again soon. I love the negative painting on the feathers!! (I uploaded a picture of him on the FB page). So glad to be here on your Patreon site, Louise!!

I really enjoyed this tutorial. Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Jeanette and thank you again for your beautiful photos. I want to paint one of your 'eagle in flight' photos when I get a chance. I thought I'd ease into it slowly with a head view. I didn't want to overwhelm everyone just yet. 😝

Jeanette Mahoney

Good idea. This one is beautiful. I really like the looseness in it. And the color in the white head.

Marijke de Boer

This will be a challenge - I love the look of the eagle and that bill:) Quite stunning!

Louise Alford

Hello Louise, I am brand new to watercolor and just finished painting your eagle. Thank you so much! I would never have had a clue how to paint something like this without your thoughtful instruction. Your video is excellent and you have a such a soothing voice. I can't tell you how much fun this is, painting along with you. I've already learned so much!

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful Louise! This is a difficult painting so well done for painting it. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you very much. 💕

Patricia Teal

This one looks fun! I love painting raptors!

Connie Bigelow

I just finished this painting and am very pleased at my results. I really am enjoying being a member! I have done a few other tutorials and I have learned so much from you Louise! Your tutorials are easy to follow and you are good at explaining what you are doing. Fantastick teacher!

Louise De Masi

That's really good to know. Thank you very much Connie. 💕

I must admit I was really afraid of even starting this eagle as I was afraid that I would never be able to do it and would get discouraged. But you are such a fabulous instructor that I was able to actually finish this and I must admit, I am really happy with it! I have also finished your robin, bluebird and sitting hummingbird, all with amazing results. I am now going to start on the newest hummingbird you just posted. My goal is to learn as much as I can from you so that I can apply that knowledge to painting some of my own bird photos. I recently got some great shots of a Pileated Woodpecker which I would like to try soon, but it's a little scary to go out on my own without you "holding my hand!" Thanks so much for sharing your vast knowledge, incredible skill, and inspirational enthusiasm for watercolor with all of us!

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much for letting me know Ginny. I'm glad the tutorials are helping you. When you are ready to paint from your own photos be prepared to paint them more than once. Paint them over and over and use each painting as a learning step. I still do that now with some paintings even after nearly ten years of painting in watercolour.

Ginny Westrick

Thank you for that advice! Remembering that I can do a subject many times will help take the fear out of starting it in the first place - LOL. Right now, I am really enjoying painting from your tutorials, as I am sure I will continue to do so that I can continue learning from you. Thank you!

Louise can you tell me what differences you found between aquaboard and the arches watercolour board. I baught some aquaboard today and would like some advice before I give it a try

Louise De Masi

Hi Karen, Ampersand Aquaboard is a completely different surface to paint on. It's not like painting on paper at all. I don't like using it personally. You have to adjust the way you paint. I painted the Lilies on it and I have a post here if you want to see it in action: https://www.patreon.com/posts/34230664 Arches watercolour board on the other hand is the same as painting on paper except you don't have to stretch it first.

I am having trouble finding #00 and #000 size brushes. Any suggestions for sources in the US? Also, what does the first number mean, ie: 4/0. Thank you, Marika

Marika Roth

Is there a reference photo posted anywhere in this tutorial.

Louise De Masi

It's from Pixabay. The link is on the Supplies List. I've also put the link in my message above.

Marika Roth

Thank you for replying so quickly. I didn't look on the supplies list because I thought it was on the links where the finished painting is. I've been working on the eagle for awhile now and had wanted to check the photo again. I think my second one is looking pretty good now.

Louise De Masi

That's great! It's not an easy painting so I'm glad you are doing well with it. I know I can supply the photo from Pixabay but I don't like to redistribute other photographers' photos. There is a donate 'buy coffee' button on each Pixabay photo. You can donate a small amount of money to each photographer if you want to and if I redistribute their photos I'm taking that option away from them, which I don't think is fair to them so that's why I prefer to provide the link to the photo rather than the photo itself.
