Hi everyone,

I’ve made this tutorial with my beginner painters in mind. It’s a fairly simple pen and wash painting and it will give you practice with working wet on wet.

Wet on wet simply means painting wet paint onto a wet surface.

It’s a technique that I use a lot in all of my paintings.

I do a lot of paint blending and mixing on the paper when I paint and I prefer to do it on the paper than to mix the colours in my palette. So you’ll get to practice that.

I only used three colours for this painting. One of the colours , Quinacridone Violet, is a new colour that Winsor and Newton have added to their range so I don’t expect you’ll have it in your painting kit. So you can either use a similar colour or you can use three totally different colours. Play around with your colours on a scrap piece of paper until you find three that you’d like to use.

All of the files you need are attached below. I've included an A3 size line drawing that is spread over two pages for those who have difficulty enlarging. My finished painting is also attached to help you paint yours.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/32931226

Don't forget I have an index for all of the Patreon tutorials on my website: http://www.louisedemasi.com/new-index

It's easier to find what you are looking for there.

Have fun and I hope you enjoy it.

Nalda Paterson

Hi there just looking for part 2 cannot find it.

Louise De Masi

Hi Nalda, there's a link to part 2 in the message to everyone I wrote below the video.

Nalda Paterson

Got it thankyou so much. You have turned my work around. one thousand thankyous. xxx

Louise De Masi

That makes me very happy to know. Thanks Nalda. ❤️

Maria Martinez

Thank you I loved making this..twice already in different sizes…beautiful❣️

Pam Causey

Could you tell me what other blue I could use with this, thanks Pam

Louise De Masi

Hi Pam, It's a fun, expressive painting. You can use a blue that you love using. It really doesn't matter.

One Last Midnight

Completely new to your Patreon, and loving your YouTube side of the house. Can I ask favor? In your future posts that have resources... Can you please add an "all_resource_files.zip" so we can quickly get everything for the tutorial at once? Many thanks, and keep up the great work!

Louise De Masi

Great idea. Thank you for the suggestion. I'll include a zip file moving forward. I'll still keep attaching them individually though as well for those who might have difficulty opening zip files.

Greet

This one was great fun to paint. It feels like I'm making art. It's now drying and I'm curious about the result.

GWEN

Why does the finished photo have pink in place of the violet?

Louise De Masi

Hi DerosGirl, the colour variation is just from my scanner. The finished image is a scan of the original painting, and sometimes the scanner shifts certain colours a little, particularly violets and purples, which can end up looking more pink than they do in the actual painting.

LJX

Thank you. I love pen and wash. I can't wait to start this x

Kathy Bergsma

Looking forward to trying this one. Thank you! Is the link to part 2 missing?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Kathy. It should be there, I just checked it. Try refreshing your page. I had to go back and add it after I posted it. Let me know if it's not working for you.

Sheridan

This looks like the perfect project to try once I've finished your excellent technique tutorials. Thank you! 🙂

Chantelle Venter

Yay... Been waiting for this one. Love the colours and style. My 9 year old daughter is going to attempt this with me 😍

Marijke de Boer

Is very pretty! I love the colours! As for the micro pen - can I also use a faber castell pitt artist pen? Does it matter? I have not used a micro pen with water colours yet - but did buy a faber castel set the other day. I bought a set that contained white pens (which I needed) but it also has one black.... may come in handy now?

Tricia Commons

Just began watching part 1 of dragonflies. Louise, you are such a thorough teacher. A rare breed. You help those watching at all skill levels. Thank you! I commend you and if there is a medal or top ribbon, you should get the award. It is the little details that I so appreciate as a novice.

Palmira Farkash

Schminche and Daniel Smith have this color as well so people may have those from their lines - both named Quinacridone purple. Those who want this color specifically and don't have it from any of these brands can find it in the dot cards as well if they happen to have those around. DS's cards especially contain rather generous sample dots that would probably be enough for this kind of project :)

Louise De Masi

Hi Marijke. Thank you! As long as it's waterproof and archival there will be no problem using it.

Louise De Masi

You're very kind. Thank you Tricia. I'm blushing ☺️. 💕

River

Thank you thank you thank you

Hotflash Vickie

Weeee! Finally, a Vickie-level painting, LOL!!! I should be finished with my very first "completed" watercolor by then (the black crow), which Hubby intends to frame (against my wishes, as it is, umm, not too good). He's only framing it because the painting supplies I've been buying for the past year represent three of his paychecks. No, I'm teasing. Sort of. Anyway, I should actually be able to get these dragonflies done in a day, yippee, considerably less than the three weeks I've spent so far on the crow!!! Hugs, kisses and a MILLION THANKS for doing this (but I am loving all I'm learning from doing the crow, seriously)!

Greer

Lovely! Can’t wait to give it a go!

River

Thank you. This was exactly what I needed. The showing of the paper wetness, the density of the paints, and most importantly the dabbing of the brush before touching the paper. It is these baby steps that give me the confidence to try your other stunning paintings. Thank you for helping this “wanna be” artist!!! And more please 😁😁😁

Claire

Wow I love this has a modern contemporary look to it, and I've never done splashy stuff or pen work so this will be a great new learning experience. Excited to do this one.

Patti Kehl

Starting this today!! Thank you for your wonderful tutorials I am learning so much : )

Lydia Shemain

Great tutorial Louise. Sort of practising backgrounds mini version. Love the colourful dragons. Most of all love your tutorials — so informative — great online instruction. Thank you.

Karen collar

Really enjoying this tutorial thanks Louise - I love pen and wash, can't wait to give this a go! Good luck with your WIRES fund raising, it is so upsetting seeing those fires, if only we could give you some of our grey wet UK skies....

Louise De Masi

Thank you Karen. They have forecast some rain for NSW so my fingers are crossed 🤞🏻.

As others have, I thank you for the view of your paint and seeing the amount of pigment in the watery color and how to apply to the wet paper. I am going to retry my monstera leaf to see if I can now avoid that moldy look I got. An issue I think is with my paper drying so fast since it is winter here in Maine and the heat on makes the air much drier. Thank you again! Good thoughts and prayers going out for the plight of Australia with this long drought and fires. I hope you and your family are safe.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure. Thanks Michelle. I have added a section in my Koala tutorial (I'm still working on it) where I talk about priming your paper before you paint on it. It might help you with keeping your paper wetter for longer.

Lila Matessino

So glad you gave drawing of top and bottom halves separately. I did the entire and framed it, now I will do each and frame them. Thanks Louise, they come out beautifully. I will try to use metallics over regular watercolor for these.

5 Flavors

Louise, I have successfully painted some of your more complex projects but there is something so fun about the smaller, simpler ones when I feel like painting something but not something I will have to commit to for a week or more. Loved the pea and pepper, the cat looking down and this one. It's not necessarily a level thing but a size of project thing.

Louise De Masi

Thanks for letting me know. I'll keep that in mind next year when I'm painting. I'll try to do a mix of short and long. I have a little penguin painted that was fairly quick. I'll post a tutorial of him early next year.

Lana Webster

I’m having a problem to open the tutorial?

Louise De Masi

Hi Lana, f you are using the Patreon app that is probably why you are having difficulty. The app tends to be glitchy particularly if you haven't done all the updates. It's best to log into Patreon using your internet browser and watch the videos that way. I hope that helps.

Lana Webster

Hi Luise, I’ve the Patreon app and have been using the tutorials without any problems but yesterday I’ve had some difficulty to watch particularly the dragonflies tutorial. It never happened before, anyway It was ok in the evening. I think It could be to the internet browser. I’ve enjoyed the tutorial and my dragonflies look great, thanks to you🥰

Louise De Masi

That's great Lana, I'm glad! 🥰 Video buffering issues could be your internet speed/connection when lots of people are using the internet in your area at once or it could be the Patreon app if you were using that.

Andrea Paulis

Thank you Louise for responding to my earlier post and directing me to your index. I am looking forward to the glass vase tutorial in March. All of this is very new to me, I am a writer, not an artist, but watercolor painting fascinates me; especially watching the artist paint; it's magic being created.

Kara Vasquez

I joined last week and enjoyed completing the dragonfly pen & wash project. I learned so much about wet on wet and identifying paint consistencies, and I saw first-hand at least one difference between artist-grade and student watercolor paint. (I used Grumbacher Academy for one of the colors and it just didn't move as much on the paper, making the result quite streaky and blotchy compared to the artist-grade paint.) Can't wait to try another project!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Kara. I'm glad you learned a lot and that's good to know about the Grumbacher paint.
