Hi everyone,

This is a quick update to let you know what I'm working on at the moment. The beginner glazing tutorial of the Eucalyptus Leaves will be posted before the end of the week. It's not a difficult painting so don't be daunted by it if you think it is.

I finished painting some Lilies on some Aquabord today. I had intended to make a tutorial of it but as I got further into the painting I realized I had no idea what I was doing and I was making a mess of it. I knew I couldn't teach you how to paint on it if I was struggling myself. So I didn't film it all. I turned the camera off, annoyed with myself.  I struggled on and then I thought maybe instead of making an official tutorial I'd make a video that shows my struggles and how I battled with it. So I'm working on that at the moment.

Remember I said I thought I'd document my 'landscape learning'? Well, I took some time for myself last weekend and I had a play in my watercolour journal. I took some photos of trees in our garden and I painted some simple little tree studies so I'll share my learning about that with you when I'm finished.

My son (the videographer I told you about) has all the footage of the wren that I painted with the variegated background wash. He's going to cut all the video and send it back to me so I can do the voice over and make a tutorial of that painting.

Finally, I have a video I want to share with you where I open up all the art supplies I've bought over the last 6 weeks or so. I thought you might be interested so I filmed myself opening each box. I'll post that soon too.

I hope you are having a good week.

The lilies are lovely! It looks to me like you know what your doing! ❤️

Louise De Masi

Thanks Kimberly. It was a battle all the way to the end.

The lilies are nice. I bought a board but I’m not confident enough to try it. What makes it hard to work with? Looking forward to all the future tutorials.

Nickie

I bought a board from Jerysaerarama.com. I don’t like it. It dries really fast and the paint doesn’t rub right. Very frustrating! So I get what you are talking about. However, looking at your painting it’s still beautiful.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Kathy. Ampersand say that the surface is like painting on cold pressed paper. It isn't - not at all. I couldn't work wet on wet like I can on paper. I couldn't drop one colour into another like I can on paper. The paint sits on top of the surface and doesn't penetrate the clay which means you can remove paint long after it has dried almost back to the white of the board. This is both helpful and a hindrance at the same time. Washes go on patchy and its difficult to soften edges. It's totally different to painting on paper. Once you change the way you paint you can work with it but it's not easy. It also for me, defeats the purpose of using watercolour. I may as well have painted the lilies in acrylic paint and it would have been easier probably.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Nickie. It can be frustrating to use. It takes a bit of getting used to.

Kathy Wilden

Thank you Louise for your reply. Do you think it would be better with gouache. I have some gouache paints.

Louise De Masi

I've got a video coming out soon that will show you the difficulty I had. You could try watercolour and if you have problems then you could use goauche over the top. Gouache has a tendency to lift off as well though so it's hard to say. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Marika Wooding

Looking forward to giving this a try, the eucalyptus look great so do the trees.

Nicole Butzen

Happy with the trees. I hate painting them. Hopefully I will succeed with your technique.

Ahhh I love unboxing videos!

Thanks for the update, Louise! The paintings above all look good to me and I am looking forward to each of your videos, especially the eucalyptus leaves! I should be good at that as a beginner! 🙏

Sue Hamman

I love the calla lilies - they are my favorite flowers. Maybe I could just try to paint them on “regular” watercolor paper... Thanks for everything you do. You always go above and beyond!!

Lydia Shemain

Look forward to the video on the trees, they are lovely. I love the lilies too Louise.
