Hi everyone,

Here's a video I posted on YouTube. I painted these Lilies on some Aquabord thinking I'd make a tutorial for you guys but right from the start I was struggling with this surface. This painting fought me the whole way and the battle is recorded here.

Painting on Aquabord is nothing like painting on paper and you have to change all of your techniques. That's what I struggled with. I wanted to paint the way I paint on paper and this surface would not let me do that. I persisted with it because I wanted to succeed but there were many times when I was ready to abandon the painting.

I think Aquabord would be a good surface to paint animal fur on because of the ability to be able to lift paint off to create highlights and I think it will be good for when I start painting portraits because I'll be able to lift off any errors and start again.

So I will try again and perhaps next time I might make my paint a bit thicker 🤷🏼‍♀️. When I feel I have a better understanding of this surface I'll make a tutorial for you.

Enjoy the weekend. I'm going to do some more tree painting today 🌳.

💚

Would you be willing to share the reference photo for this please? Or do a tutorial for this image on paper? It’s a gorgeous image!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Xue. I've had a few people ask me to do a tutorial of this painting on paper so I'll do that. I'll paint it again on paper and I'll make a full length tutorial.

Xue L

Thank you so much! Really appreciate how accommodating you are to your students! And despite your struggles, this is still a stunning painting.

Nancy Guenther

I’m so glad I watched this. I bought a piece of aquabord today to try. I learned a lot from this video but I think I will wait for your tutorial before trying to paint on it! Otherwise I would for sure be binning it!Was that the sound of the ocean in the background? At least that was hopefully soothing!

Louise De Masi

I'm painting on Aquabord today Nancy! It takes a lot of patience because layering is involved. I'm still experimenting with it and getting to know it. I'll find a simple subject and make a tutorial using it when I can. No ocean sounds - I wish! We live about a 20 minute drive away from the ocean. ❤️

Melia A Evans

Love painting portraits on aquabord. Patience and small strokes are keys to success.

Hyacinth Steele

I would love to join any tutorials you produce on using Aquabord. A key to Aquabord for tutorials I have watched is to let it completely dry between layers and if you don't like blooms to not use too much water on your brush.

Susan Fairbairn

Nothing like watching the maestro struggle 😂😂 good for u giving it a go x

Shelly Solle

Definitely a Calla Lily and not Iris. This was a perfect chance to try my lifting medium.

Elaine

I don’t think I will be trying this board Louise, I have enough trouble on good paper ! I admire your determination to keep going with it, I still think it’s a gorgeous painting despite your struggles with it. 😍

Pam

Even with the battles you had, it still looks amazing. I certainly won’t be trying this board either. 😂

Rita Navroth

Thank you Louise, I was one of the people that asked you about trying the aquaboards. Sorry. I only purchasse very small ones and have not tried it yet. I did see a youtube vedio that recommends wetting the board twice befor painting? However watching you paint with this dosn't look like it would help much. I think your finished Lilly painting is very nice regardless of your struggles, but that just speakes to what a wonderfully talented painter you are. I don't think many of will spend the money to work with the aquaboard after watching you struggle. Thanks again for doing this. :-)

Melanie Maguire

That's a beautiful painting, Louise, so I think you were victorious in the end! I found this utterly fascinating because over the last month or so I've been experimenting with watercolour grounds - in particular making my own watercolour ground. The problems that I've had are exactly the same as the problems you've had with the Aquaboard - the paint lifts endlessly and doesn't flow. I found myself using thicker and thicker paint to try to add layers without just lifting the previous ones. I totally relate to your experience with the last leaf where you felt you were going back and forward putting on paint, lifting it off again. It's like painting on concrete and the end result on my paintings looked a little like a fresco. It no longer looked like a watercolour painting because it really didn't have the qualities of watercolour - the varied washes and layers, the blooms etc. Thank you so much for your detailed assessment, and it turned out to be a stunning painting in the end. :)

Lydia Shemain

Louise, I think the painting is beautiful. You captured the colours of the lily beautifully. i think despite the challenges the board presented you overcame them. Great job.

Jan Parkinson

The finished painting is beautiful despite the battles with the board. I would love to see this on regular watercolour paper as a tutorial from you as it’s my favourite flower! 😁

Cassandra Kinlyside

Please paint this as a tutorial on paper. White and green flowers are my favourite. As for the aqua board I won’t be trying it. That being said though a lady on patreon who paints watercolour portraits said she uses household paint primer on board and it is outstanding compared to aqua board. I though think I will stick to paper. it

Robyn

Thanks for giving it a shot. I had trouble with it also.

Melissa

I think it's lovely I agree with the others I would also like to do it on paper.

Soila Tuominen

Wow, thanks for posting :) I was just earlier trying to find a watercolor board but I ended up buying separately a nice wooden panel and watercolor ground. The pros you mentioned with board also valid with with the ground, however, as you also noticed the lifting can be a curse :D It was a pain for me also with the ground, so I can relate to your frustration. As said, just needs practice and new techniques vs. paper, but I am still learning techniques painting on paper, so I'll just finish my last panel (somehow) and continue studies with paper :D One tip, if there is need to rewind back to clean surface -> magic eraser (sponge). Your painting is beautiful anyway! Eagerly waiting more insights later.

Isatys09

I wished my struggling pieces looked like that:) Lovely painting that I very much liked a tutorial on regular watercolour paper. Pretty please :)

Patsy Ann Riendeau

Thanks Louise. That was great to watch. Some of your commentary was quite amusing.... "i'm not sure what I was trying to do" said in your soft voice. You are adorable and I love watching what you do. Your skill is exemplary. Keep up the great work. I will do this on paper first then I will try the board. Thanks!!!

Shelly Solle

What brush are you using in the beginning of the video please ?

Louise De Masi

It was a Silver Black Velvet round brush but I stopped using it because I was worried that the surface was too rough and might damage it. I switched to my Cotman brushes.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Solia. I've got some of those. I'll use them next time.

cherie

Thanks for the very informative video Louise. Sorry it was so frustrating to work with - you certainly got there in the end though with a lovely painting. Thanks to your demonstration I know Aquaboard isn't for me. I'm only just emerging from similar frustrations as a beginner on paper and want to further develop there before trying to learn a new way of painting. I love the beautiful effects from the paint flowing and blending on wet paper and the ability to soften edges. I can't see myself emerging from that any time soon so thank you for saving me much time and frustration! Much appreciated :)

Steph Hatchett

While I understand the frustration of how you feel it SHOULD be/look, I am still in love with this painting! You've captured the nuance of the delicate shading and veins, and it's just lovely. I also appreciate you taking me back to the childhood memory of having calla lilies in our garden. I keep coming back to look at it again, so maybe it will be my next attempt. Thanks, Louise!

Laura Etchemaite-Walborn

The painting is so beautiful Louis! Like others, I would love a tutorial of the same painting on paper!

Amy Arendsen

This painting is stunning. Love, love love it. It would make an awesome tutorial if you choose to repaint it on watercolor paper.

Katherine Docherty

Loved watching this & would like to try painting on paper if you would do a tutorial in future. Love Calla Lilies, but prefer paper to board as I wasn't as successful with it as I'd hoped!x

Louise De Masi

He messaged me and told me. Thanks Christine. I love Steve's videos. I agree with him that these boards would be good for mixed media. They take the joy out of painting with watercolour for me.

Sandra Dennington

Despite your struggles the finished painting is beautiful 🥰

Carol Bonnett Edmondson

I loved the white lilies. I would like to paint them. I think I could paint them on paper even though the tutorial was on aqua board, but if you paint it again on paper, I'm sure many of us would benefit from the lesson.

Malisa Phillips

What about using watercolor ground ?? Theres a cold press version and a textured version from Qor and Schmincke i think. I was gonna buy some so I could use canvas for some mixed media pieces. But they have a smooth version that is incredibly similar to cold press paper. Just a thought. Xoxo

Louise De Masi

Thanks Malisa. I've never tried it because I love painting on watercolour paper more than anything. It's quite a bit different to painting on paper but it's certainly something to consider.

Kelly Holliday

Louise--I'd like to paint this composition using the techniques you showed in the other lily tutorial. BUT, do you happen to have the line drawing for this one you can post? Probablynot as this is quite a while ago

Louise De Masi

Hi Kelly, I've just done a line drawing. I've attached it to the post.

Kelly Holliday

You are simply the best! So appreciate that. Will be my next one to tackle.

Stacia Findlay

I just stumbled across this older tutorial - wondering what the source of the reference image is? Is it from a photo or just your own drawing? I want to be sure to credit it properly if I attempt it myself! (Not on Aquabord though LOL)

Louise De Masi

Hi Stacia, It was painted from a photo that I took myself. Thanks!
