Hi everyone,

For those of you who have asked, here is the full length version of my Dalmatian tutorial.

This is part 1. There are two parts. Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/35974719

The files you need are available to download at the bottom of this message.

The 'Chelsea Line Drawing' file is A4 size which is 11.7" by 8.3".

I have also included a larger version of the line drawing so that you can print it on two pieces of paper (for those who have difficulty enlarging documents on their devices.)

Chelsea was our beautiful girl for 12 years. The kids grew up with her and she was a very important part of our lives. We lost her in 2012 and we still miss her. My younger son Carl, the one in Sydney, has a lovely girlfriend. She asked me if I would paint Chelsea so she could give it to him for his birthday.

I've included some footage at the end of part 2 where you will see Carl with his painting. He loves it. He took her death pretty hard. He and Dom buried her in our backyard. One rainy day shortly after we lost her I couldn't find Carl anywhere. I was getting worried and then I saw him sitting beside her grave in the rain. It makes me cry thinking about it. If you decide to paint her, I hope you enjoy it.

Linda

While you are apologising about the noisy Cockatoos there I can hear a flock outside here😀

Rebecca

Oh my goodness Louise … this is such an incredible tribute to your Chelsea. What a wonderful birthday present for your son.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Rebecca. He loved the painting and he loved her so much. We buried her in the backyard. I couldn't find Carl a few days later. I eventually found him sitting by himself beside her grave, in the misty rain. He was 17 at the time.

Rebecca

Oh Louise … that must have been such a sad time. Being 17 is hard enough without losing your best friend (actually, any age is hard, isn’t it?). Painting Chelsea must have been very emotional for you. Thank you for sharing her here.

Isatys09

Such a touching story for a lovely painting!

Marijke de Boer

I am so touched by it too - she looks such an adorably puppy back in 2001! thank you for sharing this.

River

Thank you so much Louise. I feel your pain..I just lost my much adored and loved Doberman. He was also 12 yrs old. I miss my Teddy bear everyday. Thank you for this so I might be able to paint him for myself. I made myself cry writing this.

Hi Louise, I love watching your demo's on utube especially when painting animals and birds! I take many photos to copy and wondered how you transfer your photo image to your paper? I have tried tracing paper leaving a hard edge that cannot be erased. Do you sell any of your unframed original paintings? If so the cost please. Thankyou for sharing your beautiful work.

Louise De Masi

Hi Isobel, Sometimes I use saral paper or transfer paper and sometimes I'll scribble over the back of my drawing with a graphite pencil. Then I lay it on the watercolour paper with the graphite side against the watercolour paper. I'll use a pen or stylus to trace over the drawing. The graphite on the back will transfer where you've traced onto the watercolour paper. I never press too heavy because I don't want to indent the paper. I always erase the line drawing a little before I start painting so it's not too dark. I do sell my original paintings. I haven't got any listed at the moment because I'm too busy here on Patreon and Skillshare and I haven't had the time. The prices vary according to size and complexity.

Thankyou for your prompt response Louise.

Hi, I really like the way you mixed the colors for the black. It adds vibrance to the picture. You suggested mixing transparent colors. I have winsor red deep which is semi transparent. Would it work just the same?

Louise De Masi

Hi Iona, more than likely it will. It might be slightly different but give it a try and see if you like the colour.

Iona Treeby Ward

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'll try it out. Thanks

Jacinthe Boudreau

Hi Louise, to create the black you recommended Windsor Green. To replace this green which green is best.....Permanent Green or Sap Green or other? Thank you in advance.....

Louise De Masi

Hi Jacinthe, Try Sap Green or you could mix up an entirely new mix with three transparent primary colours - red, yellow and blue. Experiment with a few colours and see what you like.

Jacinthe Boudreau

I’ve mixed permanent green and Alison crimson and a tiny bit of blue and the black is nice....kind of neutral. Withe the sap green it’s hard to get the neutral black. Also mineral violet, permanent green is nice and also easier to get a neutral black. Thanks for the suggestion 😊🌷

Hi Luoise I love so much your paintings I want to start with you .I have a question , the old post when I open is better because I can open with you tube and there's a subtitles can help me a lot because I'm Italian . Now with vimeo no easy.....can you help me ? Thank you. Sabrina

Louise De Masi

Hi Sabrina, I'm sorry, when I first started on Patreon I uploaded my tutorials as unlisted videos to YouTube. Then I was told that unlisted videos on Youtube can be searched for and watched by members of the public and even downloaded if they know how. So to keep them safe I opened an account on Vimeo and I have been storing them there since then. They are safe from poachers on Vimeo.

Hi I liked your picture of Chelsea so much I thought, well I could do one of our Dalmation named Tom. I tried to get a good photo but he was not co-operating so I looked for an older one that would work. My husband and I were quite shocked when we saw the differences. He used to have lots of spots around his eyes and on his jowls but over the years old age (he is nearly 13) has caught up with him and they have turned white and we had not noticed. The painting turned out fine but I gave him back his spots.

Louise De Masi

Hi Jennifer. He's a good age for a Dalmatian. Chelsea made it to 12. Her spots went white too. I'm glad you were able to return Tom to his youth in your painting. That's very clever! 💕
