Love your picture of Chelsea and your tribute to her. Your painting is beautifully done. Did you choose to use the Phthalo blue mix for the black spots instead of your more usual Fr. Ultramarine/Burnt Sienna to avoid granulation in the spots? I'll be trying to paint a Dalmatian mix for a friend and hope to follow your lead.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Linda. When I painted Chelsea I was just beginning to mix black. Previously I had used Lamp Black so I was playing around with different colours. My 'go to' easiest black to mix now is French Ultra and Burnt Sienna.

Linda Miller

Thanks Louise, that's what I'll use then. I love that mix, which I learned from you!

Amazing! I can (and will) watch this time and again just for the joy of watching you work. Thank you!

Thanks so much...Dogs are such a part of our lives...I lost my husband in September and the love we both felt for our dog brings me peace and joy. Being alone during this Covid19 isolation can be difficult, however the hours I spend watching you work, and attempting your lessons has made the alone time more manageable. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your love you show us while teaching us...stay safe and God Bless 🥰

What a beautiful girl and the painting was beautiful also.

Louise De Masi

I'm so sorry you lost your husband Karen (hugs). I'm grateful that we can stay connected and busy during this difficult time. Reach out if you need help with anything or even just to chat. 💕

Beautiful! great tutorial, love the techniques, your style and such a wonderful teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed following this tutorial and I am so pleased with the end result, I can't wait to do the other dog. Thank you very much for sharing your personal video at the end, it touched my heart.

Michelle

Thank you so much for this tutorial Louise! I not only love to see you work in this kind of situations when you have a white fur animal but also loved the fact that it was a Dalmatian! It really made my heart melt. I also used to have a black spotted Dalmatian in my home country. His name was Booguie, we got him in December 2000 and he passed away in 2014, just a few months after he turned 13. It broke my heart not only because he was my first dog but also because he was my baby. The video you posted at the end, the images recorded with a videocamera reminded me to those videos I filmed back in 2000 when we first got him. So tiny and cute!!! <3 Now that I live in Sweden I got another Dalmatian, with liver spots this time. I just love the breed, so happy, lovable and crazy :) His name is Riley and he will turn 6 now in July. I can't imagine my life without him, he's my kids (I have two kids) older brother and the three of them are just my life. With this tutorial I think I will manage to paint both of my Dalmatians and put them on our wall. Thank you so much <3

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Michelle. Thank you! Dallies are so sweet. Give Riley a hug for me. 💕

She turned out so beautiful... The video of her in the end left me in tears. She reminded me so much of my beautiful girl Lyn which I lost just a few months ago. She was a a yellow Labrador, not a Dalmatian, but there's something in your Chelsea's eyes - that look in her eyes - there's a kindness to them... that reminds me of my girl so much. Her loss was and still is heartbreaking to me. I miss her everyday and hope that someday, maybe after more time passes, I'll be able to make a painting of her in her memory as you did. I don't know if I'll be able to, I don't know how you were able to. But if I will, this tutorial will be a great help as a starting point and a general guideline, and I thank you for that.

I want to echo the sentiments of others here... what a moving and lovely tribute to your beautiful girl. Someday I hope to be able to paint our beloved beagle Zoe, who passed away in 2017 after being with us for 17 years. We miss her every day. Our pets are the greatest companions; they give us more unconditional love than we are often able to give. Made me cry. Thank you Louise.

Louise De Masi

I'm sorry you lost your beautiful girl so recently. It hurts. They are a special part of our families and we'll never forget them. Hugs 💕

Louise De Masi

Wow Naomi 17 years! That's wonderful. I'm sorry you lost her and I'm sorry I made you cry. I hope they were tears from good memories. They are such beautiful animals. 💕

What an awesome gift for your son! Dogs are so precious to us. Thanks for the video of the real dog. She was a beauty!

Hi Louise I have to tell you how much these tutorials have helped me.I have a long way to go. I would like to invest in some brushes like you use.Could you please tell me which ones I should start with.Thank you for your excellent work and I do not mind staying home in Florida now cause of you.We have a lot of COVID here.Be safe and happy painting.Your grateful friend Barb

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Barbara. I'm glad they are helping. We all need some joy in our lives and a distraction from the world helps. Please be safe. I use Da Vinci Maestros series 35. They are fairly expensive though- particularly in the larger sizes. They are beautiful to paint with. I've been using the same set for about 5 years now. They reshape when they are wet beautifully. I love their pointy tip. I prefer to paint with pointed round brushes. I just discovered Rosemary and Co brushes that are similar but a little cheaper. I used them the other day on a painting and they worked well. I need to use them more before I form a decision about whether I'll buy more of them though. I'm so used to using the Maestros that when I pick up another brush to use it feels strange in my hand. I'm not sure if you've seen the post here about them: https://www.patreon.com/posts/38518201

Thank you Louise, I think I will stick with what works for you.It seems like the paper quality and the brushes are going to give the best results so it is a good investment.I will be trying your Koala next and hoping to develop a lighter look in my washes. The ratio of water to paint is something to practice for sure.I am thinking in investing in a size 2,5,and8 in series 35 of Davinci Maiestro, not sure of a mop brush or the Caseneo brand? Thanks again, your friend Barb

Hi Louse, I just painted Molly and just like your last doggy I painted as soon as I put the eyes down she became real and I fell in love with her! Thank you so much for your wonderful teaching, I am learning so much and I love your style. I feel so Zen when I paint with you, it's helped me cope with stress or this blasted virus. I live in California and things are bit crazy here. I am very grateful for your lovely presence in this world. Cheers! Sasha

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Sasha. It's crazy everywhere! Painting is our escape. 😘
