Hi everyone,

Here is a video I uploaded to YouTube today. I'm posting it here for future reference for the beginners. I'll add it to the clickable index so you can find it if you need it in the future. I demonstrate how I blend two different colours on my bird paintings. The tips apply to any subject not just birds.

Important Note: Since making this tutorial I have continued to learn and refine my painting method. When I wet over the yellow painted section of the parrot (3:59) I should have wet the entire yellow section - not just the top portion. Sometimes if you only wet a section of the painted area, water lines will start to form. I was lucky with this demonstration that a water line didn't form where I stopped the water. So, it's good practice to remember to wet the entire area that you want to paint over (edge to edge) to avoid ugly water lines.

Thanks,

Louise

Thank you Louise for this very helpful tutorial. I am sure I will watch this many times as I continue learning. Your explanations and examples are very easy to understand.

Anne Watman

I noticed when you demonstrated the color on the parrot that you brought the water partway down the yellow portion of the breast. But, when you were demonstrating your white pansy painting you kept reminding us to wet the entire petal to avoid a water mark. Now I’m confused.

Louise De Masi

Hi Anne, so sorry for the confusion, I was lucky when I painted the yellow section on the parrot that I didn't get a waterline. I should have wet the entire yellow section just in case. My painting method has evolved since I made this tutorial (I've learnt more) and now I know it's better practice to wet the entire area. I'll make a note in my message underneath the video. Thank you!

Michelle Wainer

I love that tip. I need to practice that. Also thank you for the outtakes, they made me laugh and I really needed a laugh.

Liette Lavoie

I am new to your patreon page an have been watching a few of your video. I can already tell i will enjoy improving my skill as an artist... love your little bits at the end...we all need to laugh. Thank you Louise🤗

Chantelle Venter

This is a wonderful tip thank so much Louise. I drew my own Dwarf Kingfisher this week but had no idea how I was going to mix all those beautiful colours together. Going to do a few more of your classes first ❤️😊

Christine Srikala

Hi Louise, great tips, thanks. Any chance you might try simple still life?

Louise De Masi

Hi Christine, thank you! I can add still lifes to my list for sure. It's a long list though 😬.

Judith Steevens

Hi Louise, will you be doing the bee eater as a tutorial on here or skill share? I tried to do one but wasn’t happy with it as it was too tight and I’d love to learn from you. Thanks for today’s tutorial great as ever. :)

Clare Connery

Thank you so much for all the extras!! I love your style ,am a beginner and you have painted so many pictures that I truly love and want to paint myself !

Marijke de Boer

This was lovely watch... I really liked that bee-eater:)

Lydia Shemain

Louise, that tip was brilliant — how important these tips are for a beginner. I don’t know how many times I have said it but you’re an awesome teacher, so dedicated I’m so lucky to have stumbled on your site and to be your student. As one who is passionate about painting flowers, I look forward to the floral tutorials you mentioned. By the way I enjoy the funny endings, you’ll also make a good comedian. Thank you Louise for everything you do for us.

Audrey Dugan

You are a wonderful Teacher, thank you :)

Jennifer Reynolds

You're vileos are great! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us...I am learning so much about how to improve my painting!

Pat Edsall

Awesome video - you instruction is so helpful. I told my husband I enjoy that you leave the "bloopers" in your videos. So much fun that we can laugh at ourselves. Thank you. Enjoy your day.

Louise De Masi

Hi Judith, Thank you! I can make a tutorial for the Bee Eater for Patreon.

Melissa

Great information. I just got your sea life book. It's wonderful

Sharon R Altman

Thank you Louise. I'm excited to incorporate your tips in my next painting.

Alberto

hi Louise, I recently joined your patreon and I write from Italy, I apologize if I don't speak English well .... I would like to know if you always prepare the paper with water before painting, also in this video? I use the same arches paper (without preparing with water) but when I go to paint wet on wet my paper dries immediately and it does not stay wet like in your videos. I wonder, is it because you prepared with water and I didn't? This is the biggest difficulty I am facing right now ... thanks for your wonderful educational work!

Louise De Masi

Hi Alberto. When you say 'prepare with water' I'm thinking you mean I stretch my paper before I paint on it. Yes I do stretch my paper before I paint on it but that shouldn't make any difference to the way it holds water when you paint on it. Stretching the paper before you paint on it stops your paper from buckling and going wavy that's all. If you are having difficulty keeping the paper wet while you paint on it there are two things you can do. One is to only work on a small section at a time. So don't wet too large an area because it will dry before you get to paint on it. The other thing you can try is to prime your paper. By that I mean wet the area you want to work on and let that area almost dry. When it's almost dry, wet it with water again and then start painting. That allows the first layer of water to soak deeper into the paper so when you wet it the second time it should stay wetter for longer for you. Try that and see if it helps. You may also not be putting enough water on the paper when you wet it and then it's drying too quickly for you.

Elaine

Great information as usual Louise, thank you for all your hard work and for your bloopers, it’s lovely to see the real you 😊💕

Alberto

Yes, I meant stretch paper before painting it .... I will try to use these tips of yours in the next drawings, thanks again

River

Thank you thank you thank you. Thankyou to you and your son for all the work that goes into these videos. Your tips videos help me so much. I love painting with you!! Yes please a giraffe!!

Hotflash Vickie

I hate to join everyone else who says your bloopers are funny, but.... they are. :) I've been wondering about your leg and your mother-in-law, though. Hope your leg has healed, or is mostly healed, anyway, and your mother-in-law is improved. Can't wait for more bloopers -- er -- tutorials shortly!!

Lori Hitchcock

Excellent demo of dealing with hard and soft edges. It makes so much more sense to me now. Also I like the tip you gave Alberto about wetting the paper twice. Can’t wait to try it.

Julia King

I've often wondered how to do this. I've tried painting a rooster, and the colors always looked blocky. Now I know how to keep that from happening. Thanks for this!

Diana Blakeman

That was so very helpful! Answered & solved many of my issues. Thanks a bunch!!

Gloria Howey

I always learn something new from you.

Susan M

Love your bloopers!

Anne-Marie De Clercq

I live in Brugge (Belgium) and thank you for the great quality of your paintings.

Pam Caudill

Hi Louise, this video was very helpful for me. Also loved, loved watching the out-takes!🥰. I’m looking to purchase some better brushes, but not sure what to purchase.. could you tell me what the brushes are that you used in the video? Thank you very much 💖

Pam Caudill

Thank you so much Louise, that’s very helpful 💗

Cecil p. Hoo

Hi louise. Very good as usual. How do u trace from ur photos and can u recommend a book or magazine that has real good subjects for tracing and then painting. Thanks again.

Louise De Masi

Hi Cecil. I use tracing paper and trace over the main shapes that I'll think I need. Anything I can't see properly or anything I miss I draw in by hand. I can't recomend any books or magazines. I don't use any for that. I use my own photos as much as possible. Pixabay is a good site to find copyright free photos to use. If you are going to use photos in books or magazines to practice from make sure that your paintings are just for practice. Don't post them on the internet or try to sell them anytime in the future. Have a look at Pixabay on the net. There are some other sites too that allow you to download copyright free photos.

Denyse Sauriol

Hi Louise, just wanted to thank you for such high quality video content and tell you that your teaching method is exactly what I needed, wanted and like. I live in the US southwest and would love to see more videos of my area birds, like sparrows, mockingbirds, mallards, blue jays, maybe even rattlesnakes which I fear but have beautiful markings, holsteins

Louise De Masi

Thanks Denyse and thank you for the suggestions. I'll add them to my list.

Denyse Sauriol

Holsteins cows, monarch butterflies, lizards, Maybe fish like rainbow trouts,

Susan Mayhew

Another southwesterner from the US, would love to see a Gila woodpecker, saguaro cactus, desert sunset...

Uliana

Bee eater tutorial would be amazing!

MD

Wondering if you've ever had the urge to do whales Louis? Would love a whale.....such gorgeous creatures

Louise De Masi

I have - I've never found a photo that is copyright free and worth painting though. Wildlife Reference Photos has some good tail shots but none of the body.

Karla Sanford

Hi Louise, did you video your Bee Eater? If so, would you consider posting that tutorial as well? It is a beautiful bird.

Louise De Masi

Hi Karla, Thank you! Not all of it. It was a practice painting but I will paint another because I've had a few people mention it now.

Karla Sanford

Thank you Louise! I am one of your new members and still finding my way around Patron. I noticed many of your YouTube videos are not on Patreon or are they under a different membership plan? Thank you for all you do and sharing your wonderful gift.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure and thank you again. The tutorials are the same on the $6 and $12 tiers. All of the tutorials I have available are on the indexes that I give everyone. I started filming for Youtube before I decided to join Patreon so you have seen some tutorials there that aren't on here. The interest on YouTube led to me starting on here. A few of the tutorials I have on there I will be making a full length tutorial of for Patreon. For example the Barn Owl. I've started to put that one together for Patreon.

Karla Sanford

Thank you for the clarification, I so appreciate you! Have a blessed day/evening!

Quinrose

So helpful. Thank you.

Denise Copeland

Thank you for a fantastic demonstration.

Donna Easler

I loved this instruction! Enjoyed the bloopers at the end as much...or MORE! 🤣

Delores Pumphrey

You explain everything wonderfully. I love how you teach. Thank you..

Robyn Burgess

I’ll go and apply this to my Fairy Wren I did this week. The edges are too hard
