Hi everyone,

I hope you are having an enjoyable weekend. I'm helping Dom paint the windows on the house. It's a slow process and I think we'll be still doing them this time next year 🥴.

Here is the Flying Hummingbird tutorial.

I'll put it on the indexes:

https://www.patreon.com/posts/34865676

http://www.louisedemasi.com/new-index

All of the files are attached below for you to download.

The line drawing was uploaded as a large file. It's 15" by 10" (9181pixels by 6279 pixels). I don't reduce any line drawings in size on any of the tutorials when I upload them. The supplies list is included as doc.x file and a pdf for those who can't open doc.x files.

I used two reference photos for this painting from Pixabay. The account where I downloaded the photos from has been deleted since I made this tutorial so I have attached the reference photos below with the files.  They are free photos listed under the creative commons license. I look forward to seeing your paintings. Have fun!

Thanks Louise love the colours, tried to paint along today. On the flowers and leaves. Went ok. Julie

Bron Holwerda

Hi Louise, I'm having some trouble changing the JPEG files into PDF for printing, my printer won't print it as is... I'll have to go to Officeworks. Just wondering if it's possible to offer the line sketch in PDF as well as JPEG?

Louise De Masi

Hi Bron, Dom here. Thanks for letting us know. At the moment, the line drawings are supplied as JPEG files. There are hundreds of existing files in the library, so converting and reuploading every one as a PDF would unfortunately be a very large job. You should still be able to print the JPEG directly from a computer using Microsoft Paint: On Windows: 1. Open File Explorer and locate the JPEG. 2. Right-click the file and choose Open with > Paint. 3. In Paint, click File > Print. On a Mac: 1. Double-click the JPEG to open it in Preview. 2. Select File > Print (or press ⌘ + P). This should allow you to print it without converting it to a PDF. Officeworks should also be able to print the JPEG file as it is.

Yahoooo! So excited. I've been looking forward to this hummingbird tutorial. Thank you SO VERY MUCH Louise. You're such a talented blessing. 🥳🙋‍♀️

Amy Kenyon

Beautiful tutorial Louise! Do you use transfer(graphite) paper to transfer the design to your watercolor paper? Or do you eyeball the reference photo and draw it freehand? When I transfer with graphite paper, the lines are hard to erase off the watercolor paper. I’m wondering what your method is😉Thank you!

Louise De Masi

Hi Amy, Thank you. Sometimes I'll draw them freehand when I'm in the mood to draw (which isn't often). Most times I'm too busy to spend the time so I'll print the photograph to the size I need. Then I'll use some tracing paper to get the main outline and then I'll fill in any detail I need or anything I want to change by hand. I nearly always do the drawing on a seperate piece of paper rather than draw directly onto the watercolor paper. Once I've got the drawing sorted I'll transfer it onto the watercolour paper with some Saral transfer paper usually. Lately I've been scribbling over the back of the line drawing with graphite and transferring it on that way. It's less messy than using transfer paper.

Christine Carr

I am super excited about this one I’ve been waiting patiently. This is absolutely gorgeous Louise. You are an amazing talented artist. Thank you so much

Sharon E Toombs

Thanks Louise. I'm so looking forward to painting both hummingbirds. They are gorgeous!!

Cecil p. Hoo

Louise excellent as usual. I pretty much got the gist of the different techniques except for when u were doing the feathers to make them look so realistic. Could u please elaborate on the procedure. I was also wondering that while u r doing all those minute details around the eye suppose u made a mistake do u discard the whole painting and start over afresh. Thanks.

Cecil p. Hoo

In the demos i never notice u making any mistakes.

Debra Sullivan

Great timing! If I do well with this one it'll be a mother's day gift for my mom, whose favourite birds are hummingbirds. Thanks again, Louise. And painting around windows with all their trims etc. is a grueling and slow process. Good luck!

Jo Prendergast

Thank you so much--i'm so Excited to try this! Wahoo for me!

Amy Kenyon

Thank you so much Louise! I think I’m gonna try scribbling the graphite on the back of the paper! I think it will give me what I’m looking for. Thanks again!💛

Louise De Masi

Hi Cecil, I'm not sure what particular feathers you are talking about. There's not a lot you can do to correct mistakes when you paint in watercolour because the pant is so transparent. Sometimes I gently use a scrubber brush to remove paint if I've gone astray in a small area. You can buy a medium, made by Daniel Smith called 'watercolour ground' that you can paint on the paper over mistakes. When it's dry you can paint over it. I haven't used it yet so I don't know how effective it is but others have told me it's very good. It's toxic though.

Isatys09

Thank you Louise for another great tutorial!!

Mary Jacobson

I live near the Mexico border, so we have a lot of wonderful birds. We can get 14 different Hummingbirds in our area, with two species here year round. I enjoyed the video very much and am looking forward to giving a hummingbird a try. Thanks Louise

Eve Eichner

I love hummingbirds so much and cant wait to give this one a try. You give us so many wonderful tutorials I hope you don't get burned out! Thank you so much .

Elizabeth lemieux

Sorry, I keep hitting the send button. So, I paint with you and use the colors as close as I can to the list but, I always end up too dark. Is it just a matter of time and practice?

Louise De Masi

Hi Elizabeth, Yes it takes lots of practice. It's very hard to follow along with a watercolour tutorial and end up with a painting that looks like mine. If I was to paint this hummingbird a second time it would look different again. We all paint differently as well. When you're painting along with me you try and paint like I paint but your mind is telling you to do it a different way. That's ok. Use the techniques I use that suit you and discard those that don't work for you. If you find your colours are too dark and you don't like them that way it's an easy fix - use a little more water and less pigment in the paint mix.

Elizabeth lemieux

Gosh, you are such a wonderful teacher. Thank you. My kids just bought me Windsor newton paints. For mother's day! I do compare myself to you u til you said how long you've been painting! But, you have.such an eye to see all the light and darks in a picture. My frog turned out awesome though Thank you again for the speedy response

Lynne Lewis

Louise have you ever done a kookaburra tutorial?

Louise De Masi

Hi Lynne, No I haven't but I intend do. I have so many photos of the Kookaburra family that live at our place. I have to put them to good use.

Delores Lopez

You are an amazing talent as well as an amazing teacher.Thank you Louise.Great tutorial!

Julia King

This was very relaxing to watch. I can't wait to try out this hummingbird. The sitting one was a lot of fun, this one looks enjoyable as well :)

Lydia Shemain

Louise, you’re the greatest. So talented. AWESOME teacher beyond compare. So pretty. Thanks.

Bonnie Martin

This is my first complete watercolor! I am quite pleased. Thank you for the great instructions!

Louise De Masi

Blushing......Thank you very much Lydia. I have the best patrons! 😘

Isobel Corbally

Thanks Louise for sharing your experience in painting with watercolour.

Alberto

hi Louise, very nice this new tutorial, I wanted to ask you why you upload videos a few times on youtube others on vimeo? I ask you why, for those like me who don't speak English well, seeing it on youtube is more advantageous because I can insert subtitles with automatic translation ... I only mention it to you because it could be an advantage for users who are not English speaking. greetings, Alberto

Louise De Masi

Hi Alberto, Thank you. When I first started here on Patreon I uploaded my tutorials onto YouTube as unlisted videos. However I found out after a few months that they are not safe on YouTube. There are sites you can go to to download unlisted YouTube videos. So people who know how to do that could have access to them. I opened an account on Vimeo because they are safe from thieves there. I would rather put them on YouTube because it's free. I have to pay to put them on Vimeo. However, I put way too much work into them to risk losing them. It's not fair to me and not fair to all my patrons. So the earlier tutorials you will find that they are on YouTube but the most recent tutorials are on Vimeo. If I could find a way to add subtitles easily to Vimeo I will. Thanks!

Marika Roth

If I want to paint some background on this, do you recommend doing this before or after painting the hummingbird? In the male fairy wren tutorial, you do some masking, then paint background. I notice that sometimes you do the main object first, then add some background. Thank you. I love your paintings and methods of instruction.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Marika. In what order you paint it is your own personal preference. I do both- I paint backgrounds first and other times I paint them last. Sometimes I like to paint them first in case I mess them up. I'd hate to spend all my time on a painting only to make a mistake at the end with a background that has gone wrong. Other times I don't intend to paint a background but when I finish the subject I decide that it might need it or I might have dropped some paint somewhere that I want to disguise. On other paintings I might wait until I see what it looks like so I can decide what colours I should use on the background. Each painting is different. All these reasons are why I am starting to paint studies in my visual diaries lately. I should listen to my own advice because I messed a background up last week because I didn't do a study first. I painted some lambs and then I decided to add the background and the colour I chose was wrong and it looked awful. It is now a painting I can learn from.

Marika Roth

Thank you. Will you have the lamb tutorial on the website? Would love to do one when you have it availabale.

Isabel Ries

I noticed on this hummingbird painting you do not use masking fluid for the white parts. On other videos you do use masking fluid and I'm wondering if it might be useful here especially for a novice like me.

Louise De Masi

Hi Isabel, You could use masking fluid on the white markings on the tail and also the little white marking behind the eye because they have hard edges running around the outside of them. Also the light feather with the jagged edges under the arm. You could use it there too.

Louise De Masi

I'll need to paint another one that I'm happy with.

Jacinthe Boudreau

Hi Louise, is it possible to insert the real sizing of paper for printing since the picture is 11.7 X 16.5. I really should explore the possibility of changing the size myself.... Thank you so much.....

Louise De Masi

Hi Jacinthe, Do you mean upload a 11.7 by 16.5 file? The file I uploaded here was the scan size of the actual line drawing I did. All I did was crop a bit of the white paper on the left hand side and a little white paper at the bottom.

Jacinthe Boudreau

Usually if the picture is more than an 8X11 size paper....the paper will print on two pages.

Jacinthe Boudreau

For example I was able to print the zebra on two pages...😊

Louise De Masi

I've just enlarged it and put it onto two printed paper size files Jacinthe. They are attached there now. I hope that helps. Thanks!

Jacinthe Boudreau

Thank you 🙏Louise. I will try to see if this is something I can’t do myself in my printer setting. Before you offered us to enlarge I would go to a printing facilities and they would enlarge and print for me.......🌷

Susan Mayhew

Thanks for your step by step instruction. I've begun to have better understanding of controlling the paint and wet and dry effects and interactions, learned to pull the paint around more effectively. I'm still having issues with the order of operations: when to paint subject first vs. background. Background is the scariest. I'm working on a photo of my grandson, in Batman pjs, waiting for a fan at his ankles to give him lift off. I have painted Zack first and now am afraid to put in background.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Susan. That sounds like a fun painting! Backgrounds are scary. The order of operations is for you to decide and it will depend on the painting. Sometimes I'll paint it first and other times I'll paint it last. Sometimes I'll paint it first if I'm worried about painting it. I don't want to spend all my time on the subject getting that right and then risk messing up with the background. Other times I'll paint it second because I feel that the painting needs a background - something might be lacking etc. I might also paint it second because I'm not sure what colours to use and I need to see the colours on the subject first. That's why a few studies first before the main painting are always helpful.

Susan Mayhew

You're right, I painted Zack first because I wasn't sure what colors to use in background. And this may well be the second study. I'm still not sure what colors to use. I've checked out several of your painting tutorials to watch you handle backgrounds. I'll probably sit it on a shelf and stare at it for a while, until Zack and I get a lift off.

Cinthia Teague

For some reason, this one was much harder for me. It took many tedious hours of concentration, but I learned a lot of new skills, and practiced old skills in tiny places. I appreciate your explanations as you go, bc it helps in tight spots and to understand the skill fully. For example, the very first skill of dry brush for texture. It turned out very pretty, but I had to practice it several times first.

Daryl Bambic

Hi Louise! I've added Patreon to my Skillshare because there is so much more choice! This is my first patreon tutorial. I'm a total newbie and so far I've done your pink rose, Sun Conure and the Galah. I appreciate your clear instructions and the close up shots of how wet the paper needs to be. I'm happy with the hummingbird (I've tagged you on Instagram) but not the flowers. I used Arches 140 lb watercolor block and made the mistake of tracing the image onto the block with the resulting hard and visible lines that would not erase. I wanted to try the block so as to NOT have to stretch the paper. I'm going to try sketching it out myself next time. Thank you for sharing your passion and helping me discover mine.

Carol Crawford Barfield

Hi Louise! I clicked on the link to the reference photos, but they aren't there. Do you know how I can access them? Thanks.

Louise De Masi

Hi Carol, I just had a look. The account on Pixabay where I got the reference photos from has been deleted since I made this tutorial so I have attached the photos with the other files above. They are both creative commons photos. You'll find them all over the net. Thanks for letting me know. I'll change the Supplies List now as well and take the links off.

Jeanne Clifton

Louise - I thank you so much for how you teach. You are a gem and I appreciate all you do to make it "doable" for newbies. Thank you thank you!

Cynthia Keith

Thanks so much Louise! Utilizing your amazing instruction, I tried painting a ruby red throat hummingbird that we see in our yard! We had a snow storm and lost wifi so I did the flowers and the leaves with out your leadership… I will now go back and try to recover the true beauty the of the flowers and leaves. Thanks again for sharing for excitement and talent in painting….

Louise De Masi

Thank you Cynthia. Hoping the snow storm wasn't too fierce.

Mike

Wonderful instruction and wonderful painting. I thank you very much for the thorough details of the steps that you show. These help me so much. Tomorrow I will begin and give it a go.

melanie dee

Hello - I have a question about the outline. Do you use the enlarged size to paint? Not enlarged seems too small! Perhaps I haven't found my goldilocks size!

Louise De Masi

Hi Melanie, Yes I prefer to paint with the larger version. I give the dimensions of my paper on the supplies lists and I usually mention it in the video as well.

Gwen Cox

I just finished the hummingbird and I am in love with it. Your videos are so professional and informative. You are my favorite art instructor. Thanks so much for the time you take to teach others.
