Hi everyone,

Happy 4th of July to all my US patrons!

This is a simple pen and wash tutorial for beginners. I did this drawing in my watercolour visual diary.

The reference photos I used were both from Pixabay. I've included a link to them on the Supplies List if you want to download them yourself.

I sped up the areas of the drawing that were a bit monotonous so use my finished inked in drawings to guide you if you get stuck.

Play around with paint colours. There's no need to use the same colours I used. The files you need are attached below for you to download.

Have fun!

I NOTICE you use a plate, do you not use your big carousel paint anymore, is it easier to just put on a ceramic plate?

Delores Lopez

Thanks for this Louise.I find that i have no problem drawing, but seem to have" paint fright".

Heidi Bingham

Are you not using Saral tracing paper anymore? Or just showing new techniques?

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Loved that, can't wait to try! I have a set of 6 Micron pens which will work, very affordable too!

Louise De Masi

I use it. I've been using a plate for some tutorials lately because it is easier to show how I'm picking up the paint or how I'm mixing etc.

A bit of both Heidi. I want to show there are different ways of doing it. Saral paper tends to be a bit messy and I'm finding the graphite leaves less smudges. I want to get a projector soon as well.

Thank you for the beautiful tutorial. My 9-year old wants to attempt this. It's going to be so much fun xxx

Hi Louise I am new to paetron. I am really enjoying your tutorials and have just started the wren. I am looking forward to also painting in acrylics it was one of the reasons I joined. I am also very interested in portraits so it’s great to see you delving into this area. I wonder if you could consider doing some colour theory lessons? I do not want to buy anymore watercolour paints as I have around 48 but I have no idea how to mix colours. In fact I really don’t understand the colours I have being so new to this. It would be so useful to have a couple of lessons on how to mix colours to match up colours you are using. You have said you use value more as a way of seeing colours and deciding your choices for a painting. So a lesson on this would be great too! Colour mixing I feel is quite an important skill to develop and at the moment I feel I am doing a version of painting by numbers by following tutorials and having exactly the same colours as the artist. Many thanks for all your wonderful lessons, you have given me confidence at last in my beginners skills!

Thanks very much Kate. That's something I have on my to do list. It's a huge topic and I will need to chip away at it slowly.

hi Kate! I am new to wc as well and one excericse I found very helpful was to create a color chart of my paints. This chart provides 'swatches' for color matching on reference.and recipe for mixing them.

Another winner! Thank you so much for all your hard work and great instructions!
