Hi everyone,

In this tutorial I demonstrate how I paint a Lily in watercolour and I also paint the same Lily in acrylic paint. I paint the Lily in watercolour first and in the second half of the video, for those patrons who are interested,  I paint the Lily in acrylic paint.

I have attached all of the files below. I've labelled them either 'acrylic' or 'watercolour'. The line drawing is the same for both Lilies. The supplies lists differ, of course.

It's been a few years since I painted in acrylic paint and I am out of practice but it was good to get the paints out again and revisit where I started. I have to admit that although it is more difficult, painting in watercolour is much more enjoyable for me.

I mention the Lilies that I painted on Aquabord. That video is here if you haven't seen it: https://www.patreon.com/posts/34230664

Other news:

I spent Sunday afternoon in the hospital. On Saturday all of a sudden I started seeing flashing lights in my right eye. It was like seeing lightning strikes very briefly. It persisted into the night and it was still happening on Sunday morning. I was also seeing little floaters in my line of vision. So I went online to Dr Google and read that it could be a detached retina and to see a doctor as soon as you can. I found a doctor's surgery that was open on Sunday and made an appointment. The dr there gave me a letter and told me to go straight over to the hospital because she didn't have the appropriate instruments to check my eyes. So off I go, over to the hospital emergency department. They put me straight through and after a few hours two eye doctors appeared and started some tests. Luckily I don't have a detached retina. I have PVD which is Posterior Vitreous Detachment which is where the gel or membrane at the back of the eye seperates from the retina. It happens as you get older to some people. Every time the membrane tugs it sends a message to my brain and I see lightning strikes. It may take a few weeks, a few months or a year to fully separate. Thankfully there is no vision loss. It will more than likely happen to my left eye as well. I have to be careful now because when this happens it can lead to a detached retina. So no weight lifting or aerobics for me for a while....😬. It was very scary!

I will never take my health for granted. I hope you are well.

Thank you!!! This one is on my bucket list!

Elaine

Thank you for the paintings. I hope you are okay Louse, that would have been so frightening. 💕

Robin Dick

That's quite scary! I'm glad it's not worse, but do be careful.

Chantelle Venter

That sounds like a scary ordeal. I hope you are better now and not pushing yourself too much. Please take care of those eyes of yours. We would still love to learn from you. Thank you for the tutorial. It's going to be interesting to see how the acrylic part goes. Sending much love from Cape Town, South Africa xxx

Claudia Constantinides

Louise, so scary! I hope you get better soon and that this problem doesn't progress!

Christine Hill

That’s happened to me as well ...it lasted quite a while but was easier day by day...❤️❤️

Jennifer Nicholson

How scary, glad you are feeling a little better. Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Christine. That's what they told me so it's good to have it confirmed. 💕

Peggy Bowers

Oh my, that's very scary. Hopefully you will recover much sooner than they expect. Take care!

Valerie Duncan

Hi Louise! I am so sorry for your PVD. I had that happen and the first time, a week after it happened, I got a partially detached retina. Drat! However the fix was not painful in the least (The doctor sort of ‘spot welds’ the retina back in place). A year later the same thing happened to the other eye. Oh the joy of aging!!! The good news is...it doesn’t hurt and my vision was just fine afterwards. Best wishes for you and hope you don’t have to get welded! LOL.

Diane Hicks

Oh my lord how terrifying for you Louise!

Delores Lopez

Dear Louise,I will keep you in my prayers and meditations, and I hope you get a great surgeon that can help you with this health problem.I hope it does not cause you any pain or distress.

Lori Jewett

The lily is beautiful. I think the acrylic actually has a bit more punch - maybe the colors are brighter? As for your eye, I’m glad you got it checked out. Your vision is nothing to mess around with! Anyway, thanks so much for your great tutorials. I learned so much from your white rose tutorial that I tried a white flower painting of my own and it came out beautifully! My Facebook friends have given it rave reviews and I may actually have to frame this one instead of throwing it onto my painting pile like I’ve done with all of my work so far.

Margaret Roberts

Hi Louise, sorry to hear about your eye, and glad your doctors were able to respond promptly. As Bette Davis said “old age ain’t for sissies”. If you can’t lift weights or do aerobics, can you at least do yoga? My hubby is sneaking up on 81, so we’ve been isolating since early March. I can echo others and say your tutorials are keeping me sane. You’re a talented artist and great teacher too. Thanks!

Jerri Henderson

So sorry you are going through this. I’m glad you got good Medical attention quickly. Take good care of yourself and those eyes that see the world so beautifully! 🤗❤️🙏🏼

Marion Aitken

So sorry to hear about your eye but at least you got onto it!! I am a firm believer (through personal experience) of "dont leave anything to chance" and get onto it straight away so its great you did. We all need you!!! Hope it gets all sorted soon for you. :-) x

MD

My goodness that must have given you a proper scare! Thank goodness your retina did not detach! Take it easy and heal. I share your absolute daily gratitude for good health! Speaking of gratitude, words cannot convey adequately how appreciated you are!! Stay well and keep on keep’n on.........

Sherie McManaman

So glad you were able to be seen right away. I also have PVD in both eyes, and it improved with time. Luckily no retinal detachment for me.... yet. Take care!

Karen Morris

I’m so glad that your retina was detached all the way but please do be careful and follow doctor’s orders. Very scary indeed. Feel better and take care. Going to look at Lillie now but I have so much catching up. I don’t know how you do all you do. Thank you, Louise. You are a gem.

Karen Morris

Oh geez. I meant to say that I was glad your retina WASN’T detached.

Susan

Take good care of your self

Karen Morris

Louise, I’m so terrible at trying to get my IPad to send messages here. I feel like a fool. I sent a message talking about your retina and saying I was glad it wasn’t detached but mistaken ly taped glad it “was” detached. Now I don’t see the original message, just my correction. Anyway, if the first message doesn’t arrive, please take care and feel better.

Susan

Its horrible to have a scare like that be a good girl 🤗🤗and do what the doctor orders xxx

Lydia Shemain

So sorry to hear about your eyes Louise. Hurry and get well. Eyes are so precious. Take care of them. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Love the watercolour Lily. Please rest.

Sharon E Toombs

All the best for your eye healing Louise. I know you will follow doctors orders and lower eye stress as much as possible. Take care.

Aleksandra Byers

I'm so sorry to hear this Louise. I hope you can recover and I will pray for that. I read about the condition and realize that I have had "floaters" in my eyes for years. My doctors have told me not to worry, but I'll pay more attention now. Take care of yourself and you have a large community of support here for you! Thank you for being such a lovely bright spot in our lives! Sasha

shirley

Best wishes for your speedy and permanent recovery. So grateful for your wonderful tutorials

Caroline

Oh wow Louise, that sounds very scary, take it easy. Thank you for the tutorial of the Lily. 😊

Oh I am so sorry to hear about your eye and no doubt it was scary. Do take care and don’t overextend yourself. Health is too important. Thinking of you and keeping you in prayer. Ps. I love the Lily and look forward to trying it. 💕

Please take good care of yourself dear Louise sending hugs from England xxx

Elisa

Louise so sorry about your eye, please take care, rest and I hope you recover quickly!

Sarah Wragg

Scary, I can totally relate to this. I lost my vision completely for 3 months before it started to come back! By the time I got my diagnosis me & Dr Google had already worked it out😉 take it easy, your health is a very precious thing. I am looking forward to doing the lily💗

Rachelle

Thanks for this tutorial But do you know how we can activate the subtitles on the vimeos videos. The CC symbol is not displayed.

Louise De Masi

I just had a look Rachel- I think I can do it on the plan that I am paying for but I'd need to pay someone to type the transcript out and create a file to upload. I've never done that before so I'd have to look into how much it costs. I've just had a quick look. An hour long video will cost about $150 to get transcribed. I'm not sure if that's US dollars or AU dollars.

Cassandra Kinlyside

I hope your eye heels quickly. That is scary. Also thank you for reminding me why I don’t want to go back near acrylic paint. If only we could make it stay wet like oil but dry so much quicker.

Lydia Frazier Bosley

So sorry to hear about your eye problem, hope it doesn't trouble you too much, and make sure to follow doctor's instructions! The comparison between watercolor and acrylic lilies was fascinating; I can see why you prefer watercolor. Thanks for all the work you do for us, your followers!

Maria Luz

Thank God you are fine!!! be careful!!!

Inna Kupchenko

Omg, it is scary! Be well, and stay healthy ,

Karen Brodsky

How frightening! I’m so glad you don’t have to worry about your vision. Quick question-are you planning to upload the waterlily painting tutorial and pictures on Patreon? I saw it on YouTube but without the attachments. Thank you Louise. Be well!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Karen. Yes I am. I will make a full length tutorial of it and I'll put it here on Patreon as soon as I can.

Cynthia Love

Praying for your health and wellness Love all that you do for us ❤️

Lynn Benn

As an artist it must have been very frightening to have eye problems and thank goodness it won't affect your eye sight. Take care and be well. Loved the comparison tutorial but will stick to watercolor.

Chiselle

I’m so sorry you’re not doing well. I do hope you get well very soon. You’re in my prayers.

Diana Blakeman

Very interesting project. As usual I learnt lots. Stay safe!!

Margret Martin

So sorry to hear about your eye but glad you saw a doctor to sort it out. Very scary I’m sure - will keep you in my prayers!! Lovely tutorial - very interesting to see difference between the two mediums. 💗

Kathleen Gill

So sorry about your eye Louise. I hope it gets better soon with no lasting side affects. 😘😘

Randelle McClure

I had the same thing last year. The flashes passed in a few weeks but I had a sensation of a grey haze with floaters in it for a couple of months....and then it was gone. I too worried about a detached retina after Dr Google. Hope your clears up quickly. I occassionally get a flashes here and there and have a little panic that it is returning.

Louise De Masi

It's scary. It's good to know others have gone through it too. I hope yours is ok too.

Louise De Masi

Oh wow- how frightening for you. I'm glad you're ok now Janette.

Janet DeVincentis

So scary, isn’t it! I’ve had 3 retina tears, which can lead to detachment. My Dr has always told me that getting treatment quickly is key. Big floaters too, I thought I would never adjust to those and now I barely notice them. Glad you’re on the mend! Rest and stay well, looking after yourself is part of a good life balance. Love you and the joy your tutorials bring to my life! Many thanks😊

Sue Kostick

EE Gads that sounds so scary !! Glad you are safe!! Big hug from Florida!

Sue Kostick

OK Are you up for a question? Looking at supplies list.. You can paint acrylic on watercolor paper?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Sue! Yes with acrylic you can use watercolour paper, illustration board, canvas, wood etc.

Kim Holden

Wow Louise, so sorry to hear that! I hope it doesn't affect your life too much while it is happening. Take care hunny!

Elaine Unger

Louise I had a detached retina about 10 years ago. My ophthalmologist used a laser and cemented it back into place. It didn't hurt at all, I only heard the popping of the laser as he was doing it. I drove home afterward and have not had any problems since. The vision wasn't compromised either. Amazing what they can do with lasers now. I'm sure you will be fine too if you get a detachment. just be sure to go to get it fixed immediately if you do.

Ali B

Just catching up on posts - very sorry to hear about your eye, Louise! I hope it doesn't cause you too much trouble.

gina Menuez Borton

This sounds like it was a scary experience! I am glad that it was not a detached retina and proud of you for going so quickly to get it checked! I am sending you good vibes for a speedy recovery!

Patricia Andrews

Hello Louise, I had that trouble many years ago, ( am now 85, birthday today} and thankfully no trouble since so hopefully the same will happen toy you.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Elaine. I'm glad yours was fixed for you. It is amazing what they can do now.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Patricia. Happy Birthday! I hope you've had a wonderful day. 🥳🍰🎁

chitra sitaraman

hi Louise! guess what! I am an ophthalmologist! i am so glad it was just a PVD. thank you so much for sharing these tutorials! loving them!

Louise De Masi

Oh wow! That's so good to know. Me too and thank you!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Sudha. I'm not sure. I'll check with my optometrist. 💜

Rhea Smith

Loved the acrylic tutorial. I have so many acrylic paints that I had to do something with them. I am happy how it turned out.

Patricia Douglas

Thank You! I enjoyed painting the lily. I paint a lot in acrylic so I only worked in watercolor. I am warming up and practicing as I want to paint my daughter's dog in watercolor. I already have the outline drawn on the paper. I think I will paint the butterfly and moth first for more warmups! Also checking up on some baby opossums that fell off momma. She has been by three or four times looking for them but hasn't found them yet...Keep moving them to where she is walking mostly. They are tucked under the hose hanger staying safe. Have to make sure they stay out of the sun. Wildlife center wants to see if mom will get them before taking them.

Louise De Masi

I'm glad. Thanks Patricia! I hope the little opossums are ok. 💕

Holly Owen

youre feeling somewhat better we hope...crossing fingers for some relief and rest for you. All is well here so we will continue our rally towards your return to health.

Renee Howard Cassese

Just saw this and am so sorry to hear about this. Scary is certainly the word. I'm glad it seems stable for now and pray your vision remains intact. Of course everyone's vision is super important, but for us artists it's doubly so. I read a lot too but of course there are audio books. Painting, well, that's a huger issue. Wishing you well and looking forward to all your art and tutorials. I am taking this one as a more simpler exercise before tackling the chrysanthemum.

Tracey Holden

I hope your eye is slowly getting better! I just tried this painting and the struggle is back. LOL I'll get it one day. The wet on wet is such a challenge for me!

Nancy Guenther

Thank you for the lily painting in acrylic. I started with acrylics and wasn’t successful and thought I couldn’t paint. Plus, I had paint everywhere and didn’t like the cleanup involved. You make it look easy! But I think I will stick with watercolor! 🙂 I love it!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Nancy. I prefer painting in watercolour. It's quicker, easier to clean up, like you said, and is less labour intensive.....plus....it's so much more fun!

Wendy Kelcey

A little late with this, but thankfully you caught it in time! My husband had similar… partially detached and they lasered it. No problems since! Next time with anything not right…. As they always say, “ don’t read online. Just get it checked out,” 😉

Louise De Masi

Thanks Wendy! They are back to normal now. I'm glad they were able to help your husband.💕

Nettie Moss

Louise I so enjoyed watching you paint with acrylics and the lily is beautiful - I think you could paint with anything - jam even! - and it would turn out good. I have some acrylics and was thinking of giving them away, but may try out with your techniques first, would like to try them quite watery and see what happens. However, I am like you - watercolour has stolen my heart and will always be my first love: I have done lino cuts, sculpting, pottery amongst other things in my time but it's always the magic of watercolour which wins nowadays ;-)

Louise De Masi

Lol- Thanks so much Nettie. Jam? That would be interesting 😂. Occasionally I get the urge to paint in acrylic. I get them out and paint something and half way through I realise why I love painting in watercolour so much. Acrylic and oil painters don't know what they're missing! 🤣

Retta Su

Ms. De Masi, I hope your eye(s) are doing well! That would be scary. I am down loading the pictures on the beginners tutorials. I am so sad to say I’m struggling to slow down, and stop. I have almost elusively done oil painting. My hand with the watercolor paint seems to be heavy. My paint can end up thicker or over worked. I so appreciate your light touch and your voice. It is not only soothing but also helps me to strive to emulate your touch. Thank you so much.

Louise De Masi

Hi Retta, Thank you! They are back to normal now. It takes a while to get used to painting in watercolour so give yourself plenty of time. Follow what I do in the tutorials. Take it step by step. You only need a small amount of paint and you let the water, the paint and the paper do the work. Watercolour has a mind of its own and it will often surprise you. I find it far less labour intensive than working with acrylic paint.
