Hi everyone,

I hope you are keeping busy and staying healthy.

I don't know about you but I have a few little things that need to be right before I start a new painting. Namely my painting room. I like to start with a clean space with everything set up neatly, brushes clean, mess put away etc. Then something happens to me during the creative process and it ends up looking like a tornado has gone through by the time I've finished the painting. The room stays like that for a few days (as pictured here) while I go and do some editing on my computer and then when I'm ready to start a new painting I have to tidy it up again before I start. Please tell me I'm not the only one with these strange habits! 🤪

I've just finished this little frog. He jumped into my life over the weekend. He hopped ahead of the Heron that I had planned but I'll get onto the Heron soon. The frog will be a tutorial too. I will upload the Goose tutorial with three colours in the next few days. I've also started putting together a full length tutorial of the Barn Owl that's on YouTube - quite a few of you have asked about that one. I have the Water Lily to work on and the little Harvest Mouse pictured above as well as the Kookaburra and the Carolina Wren. There's lots to keep me out of trouble.

Thank you for your kind messages of concern about my eye. I'm battling on with all the little floaters and occasional lightning strikes in my eye but hopefully it will return to normal soon.

Stay busy and safe!

Louise

Dear Louise: I find the birds and the trickling water in the background of your tutorials so lovely. Are the birds in our home or outside? Do you have a water fountain in your space as well? Those sounds soothe me whilst painting. 🦜⛲️

Louise De Masi

Hi Chele, The birds are outside - native birds. Our home is surrounded by forest so we get a lot of them in the garden. I'm glad they are not too distracting for you. I'm not sure what the water sound was unless it was raining when I was voicing over. ❤️

Trish Hawrys

Omgosh ! These are lovely 💖💖💖

Anna Greene

So cute! Looking forward to the tutorials.

Karen Stall

Looking forward to everything! Our dining room table has become my art space. I have a wonderful room in the basement but not the best light. I had to order a piece of furniture that should be here this week just to house my watercolor supplies. Thanks for being so inspirational!

Kimberly Ledgar

I'm exactly the same, Louise. I can't create unless my surroundings are put right and there is a sense of calm as a result. It works for me :). Thank you for your lovely tutorials.

Jerri Henderson

Yes! Love to have a clean start too! I end up with things all jumbled again by the end. Love getting lost in the process of creating though. I see the cute little harvest mouse ! Looking forward to that one!

Peggy Huff

Right there with you!! Love the frog!

Lori

Oh Louise, the little frog is darling!! I hope you do a tutorial for him! I have a friend who is facing a hard time. She adores frogs, I'd love to give it a try for her! 🐸

Debi L.

Hi! I'm new to your tutorials and excited to get started! I live in Virginia, USA, and would love to see a Gold Finch tutorial and an Eastern Bluebird tutorial if possible in the future. I do have a question...What is that plant that the mouse is on? It sort of looks like teeth on top?

Louise De Masi

Hi Debi, welcome! I have an Eastern Bluebird tutorial....I think it's an Eastern Bluebird 🤔. The plants are dried poppy seed heads I think.

Debi L.

You do have a Bluebird! Sorry about that! Thanks for your reply, Louise!

Hotflash Vickie

Oh my, it seems we have both had medical issues, then! So sorry about your eye problems, which must have happened when I was in the hospital last week having a new right knee installed. I hope you’ve had that looked at properly, as the “lightning” flashes you mention sound very much like a classic case of retinal tearing, and you do not want to let that go too long without treatment! I’m sure everything has been properly dealt with, though. I just am being overly dramatic once again. All these projects sound lovely, and since even my physical therapist thinks I’m doing an amazing job of halfway walking 4 days after surgery, it should be no time at all before I’m stumbling over to my kind of organized painting desk to get started on another project! I LOVE to be highly organized whenever I start a new painting... I just do NOT know how I can become so UNorganized in a matter of 26 minutes!!!

Louise De Masi

It's good to hear from you! I'm glad you are up and about Vickie....almost! I hope the pain is bearable for you. Do your physical therapy and in no time you'll be doing the hula. Thinking of you. Big hugs. 💕

Susan Mayhew

My master bedroom was turned into a half sewing room and half painting room. I have four sewing machines and double the mess. I sew for hospitalized kids and strew the fabric everywhere. The positive aspect is I sew while the paint dries! Your mess is tame in comparison!

Libby Padovan

Hi, very eager to have a go at the frog. I did try a frog of yours recently. Not sure where or if there is a place to upload what I've done! Anyways better hop to it and try your latest tutorial

Hotflash Vickie

I wouldn’t do the hula if you offered to pay the rest of my hospital bill!, well, maybe for that kinda money I would, cuz we’re talking serious big bucks..... I’m highly motivated to walk. Hubby is in charge of meals me: “popcorn for dinner again? Um, no,thanks, dear, still full from those delicious Pop Tarts for breakfast, wow, I really did not know they still made those!” And he helped me into the shower chair like a champ, but when I asked him to go fetch me some clothes to put on (that idea had not occurred to him) he comes back with a pair of blue jeans. That’s it. Nothing else. I told him, as gently as I could, that I was thinking more along the lines of stretchy shorts, underwear and a tee shirt.... Next Wednesday will be our 37th anniversary.... hard to believe a man can’t pick up a few more clues.... no, I’m just teasing about him. He’s adorable, just a bit... I don’t know.... mannish? He’s a little clueless, for sure. Then again, I’m not about to do any gross stuff under our house, either, because there might be bugs and spiders which would kill me instantly. By the way, I can’t wait to tackle the Carolina Wren! I saw two at my bird feeder yesterday, the bird feeder myHUSBAND gave me for Christmas last year! Isn’t he sweet? At least I’ll have some live models whilst I paint! Have a wonderful week, it’s going to be killer hot in South Carolina!

Louise De Masi

😂😂 Ha ha ha ha....I just spit my tea out......'a pair of blue jeans....that's it.' Mine is the same! Not very observant...in his own little world. Hugs again! 😘

Louise De Masi

Oh congratulations and happy anniversary in advance in case I forget! 37 years.....he's definitely a keeper.

Hotflash Vickie

Thanks, and for our anniversary he said he’d let someone else cook. and he’s a keeper for sure...I worked too hard training him to set him loose into the wild for some other woman to snatch up!

Lydia Frazier Bosley

I second the request for an American Goldfinch, one of my favorite little birds!

Lydia Frazier Bosley

That's what studios are for, right? You can wait to tidy up until you feel like it!... I'm working on the dining room table, so not quite as easy - though I must admit we don't use it much, usually eating dinner elsewhere!

Debi L.

Aren't they such beautiful little birds, Lydia? We're lucky enough to have them year around, though they have much duller feathers in the winter.

Marijke de Boer

HI Louise, take good care with your eye. I only found out as I was a bit behind with reading the blogs. I love the paintings... I have no tips regarding a messy table - I suffer from that big time too:(

Margret Martin

I always have to regroup and clean up for the next painting project, and then the process begins again. Looking forward to the new tutorials (although I have plenty older ones to keep me busy as well) 💗

Atelier Wolf

I love this little Mouse ...... thank you for this look into your Workspace

Denise Gormley

Oh my goodness, you are definitely not the only one! I have told my husband that somewhere out there SOMEONE works like I do. LOL Thank you for sharing your workspace. And can't wait for the tutorials you showed. So fun! Truly hope your eye gets to feeling better soon. You're a trooper!

Aurélie Daugas

Hi Louise... I'm from France so I hope you'll be able to understand my English 😆 I love your watercolor lessons. Your paintings are gorgeous and your exploitations are very clear. I also want to thank you about the way you speak, it's à real pleasure to listen to you and I understand everything 🙏✨ Take care of you!.. Sorry to hear about your eye problems... I have a craft room where I paint but I also do polymer clay jewelry and I try to keep all my supplies well separated but sometimes it's a mess 😂

Lydia Shemain

Louise, don’t feel guilty, you are not the only one, Craft areas always get messy no matter how hard one tries. Take it easy, it will sort itself out. Most importantly how are you? Does your eye feel better, don’t over strain it. You have a long to do list but let your eye take priority. In the interim, stay well.

Louise De Masi

Hi Lydia. I just finished tidying my room a few minutes ago. I stretched a new piece of paper too. Now for a cup of tea and a quick tv show before bed. My eye is still a bit strange with all the little floaters I'm seeing but the lightning strikes have settled down. Thank you! You stay well too. 💕

Karen Morris

Oh Louise, love that little frog. After my attempt at painting he’ll be hopping his way over to my grandsons’s bedroom. They live right around the corner but haven’t seen them in 4 months due to COVD.

Karen Morris

Vickie, I live in South Carolina too (Myrtle Beach). I read recently that SC would be ranked 3rd in the world for percent of spreading rate if we were a country. I’m 67 with a pre-existing condition so don’t go out. Painting keeps me sane! BTW, I’ve been married 40 years and my husband probably would have only brought underwear. Lol. But, you gotta love ‘me. Hope your knee feels better soon.

Teresa Arsenault

A messy work station drives me nuts. It makes me feel claustrophobic and stifles my creativity. It's the same when I’m cooking or anything else. When I revamped my studio, I intentionally left lots of big, empty work areas. But they get trashed pretty fast when I’m creating. I do mixed media and I write, so the function of my work areas changes almost every day, often more than once a day. Well organized storage (labelled) for everything is key for me. If I go to my desk to write in the morning, and my painting supplies a from the evening before are still there, I find it rather deflating. I try to get my desk set up for the following day, so I can dive in with no hindrances. So, in my long-winded way, I agree that it's hard to get going on a new project when the mess from the old one is still lying around.

Patricia Espinoza

Louise that frog and mouse look so beautiful...looking forward to the tutorials...Hope your eye gets well soon! 😉

Karen Lorenz

Louise, thank you for ameliorating some of my guilt! I have terrible guilt over the mess I make when doing art! I'm so glad you (and some others) share the same trait! I also must have things neat and tidy before I begin again. Also, I'm 71 yrs. old and a few years ago went to my opthamologist about all the zillions of floaters that suddenly appeared in one eye. She told me not to worry. It's a perfectly normal event and will dissipate. It did! Then I had it again. Same visit. Same answer. Same response. I'm fine and it never affected my vision except for the irritation it feels to look through a storm of ash falling from the sky! Thank you for all your lovely, detailed, thoroughly explained and demonstrated tutorials! You are top of the line!

Eve Eichner

Praying your eye heals fast. My husband had floaters for awhile, they did go away after awhile. I am so happy to see your studio gets messy like mine! 🤣😂🤣 Love all your tutorials. Thanks for all you share with us. I am far behind painting. (Traveling and visiting family) 💖

Suzanne canner

I am always amazed at the mess I can make during a painting. I always vow I will return the current wc brush to it’s proper place on my nearby towel but guess what it never happens.🙃. I love your work and explicit directions. Can’t wait for the little frog. He is so cute! Stay well. Floaters & lightening will dissipate in time. But very annoying.

T Latronica

Well if it makes you feel better my work space is worse! I used to work on my kitchen counter, but now have a true studio! I need to sort it out instead of just painting!!

Priscilla Mengyan

So sorry to hear about your eye concerns Louise. Hopefully you are consulting an ophthalmologist about it - those flashes could be something serious. I had flashes in my eye once, went to my eye doctor and it turned out to be nothing. Kept an eye on it for awhile but the flashes never returned. I do have age related (I'm 73) floaters, but most of the time I barely notice them. Hoping you have a similar outcome with no more concerns! As for your work area....how can we possibly create unless we have all of our "stuff" available?! :-) p.s. can't wait for the frog tutorial!!!

Gloria Kerkhoff

Louise, I just wanted you to know that my daughter experienced exactly what you described about your eye. She is doing well and has had no further occurrence. I always start with a clean art room and destroy it in the process. Like you, I ignore it for a while after finishing the painting, them must clean it up before I can start again. I always had the impression you were so neat and wondered why I couldn't seem to be. I feel somewhat less guilty now. Love the frog! So colorful and cute. As I am 74, I must "stay in place" through this Covid pandemic. You have helped me keep my sanity!! I can't thank you enough.

Naomi luce

I’m glad to hear your eye seems to be doing better (I hope ) .I can hardly wait for the frog and especially the mouse, I’m crazy about the texture on that one ! I should say trying to create it myself.... thank you for teaching us how to do these wonderful pictures ...

Betsy Sagers

A messy work station is too distracting! Whether it be painting, cooking or anything... And I do get messy (especially when I paint). Good to see I'm not the only one. Looking forward to the frog tutorial! You have been such an inspiration, Louise, and the way you teach gives me so much confidence. I hope your eye continues to improve! Also, would you happen to remember where you got the little task light that sits on your desk? I'm having trouble finding one that I am happy with. Thank you & take care.

Christine Carr

That is so funny bc I thought I was reading about myself. Lol. And yes what is it about having everything just perfect and ready prior to starting a new painting. If I don’t do this I feel very distracted by all the things around me and I tend not to do as well on the painting. Crazy 😜 but true. And yes during the process I end up with stuff everywhere lol. And I definitely have a mess if I’m doing a major spattering of paint painting like the one you shared with us on all those wonderful wild flowers. I had a lot of fun with that one but I still have no idea how most of the instructors on YouTube stay so clean during this. When I’m done I look like I have multi colored chicken pox all over my arms and even my face lol. I’ve learned to try and cover things like my iPad and move my phone out of the way but I still end up finding wayward spatters. I’m sure there is a cleaner/neater way of spattering which is obvious bc I watch those like you and other instructors make it look just perfect. But hey I do have fun with it. That tutorial you provided us and you had said to work out your frustrations through it. Boy did I ever I ended up laughing so hard by time I finished and my daughter was upstairs and finally came down and said what in the world are you laughing at then she took one look at me and we both had a good laugh 😆 so thank you for that much needed day of therapy. But back to having things just right before I paint a new project I often will get everything set up just right the night before paints paper taped down the exact brushes I want etc all laid out with clean water in my bucket so then that morning I can just get right to business. There is something so wonderful about seeing my area so nice and neat and all ready to go it truly gets me even more excited to paint. It’s the only way I like to start a painting 🥰💕

Tiffany Townsend

Hi Louise, I noticed that you completed the frog in a watercolor sketchbook. Do you plan your paintings every time but creating a painting first in your sketchbook and then enlarging it on a bigger piece of paper?

Lesley Kuhn

Louise, please take care! Maybe a vacation is in order to rest your eyes! I love you and your teaching but your health is so much more important! Please see a doctor as soon as possible!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Lesley. I went to the hospital and then the optometrist. They are keeping an eye on me.......lol. 😘

Louise De Masi

Hi Tiffany. Not every time but I am doing it more and more lately. I'll do it if I am planning to paint it for a tutorial and I'm a bit uncertain of how it will turn out. I'll do a practice run in my journal or on a smaller piece of watercolour paper. It helps me to work out any problems I might encounter and find ways to avoid them on my proper painting. Doing it in my journal first takes the fear away as well. If I've painted the subject before and I am confident I know what I'm doing I'll go straight ahead and paint a big one on my good paper.

Louise De Masi

That sounds exactly like me Christine. I cleaned up my room last night, cleaned my brushes, put all the mess away so it's ready for me the next time I am ready to paint and make a mess again. It's a never ending cycle. I can't start painting in a mess but I certainly end up in a mess by the time I'm finished.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Gloria. I feel more normal now with my creativity process. It's not just me after all. 😘

Louise De Masi

Thank you Priscilla. They are looking after me. I go back in 6 weeks to have it checked again. 💕

Diana Blakeman

Flashes of brilliance??!! (not really funny) hopefully the eyes will settle down soon. Anything to do with poppies and teamed with a mouse ... perfection. Looking forward!! Take care, keep safe, look after yourself

Christine Carr

Louise I want to apologize as I quickly read the post and I had thought it was one of the other artists I support on patreon and the other day she did a super loose painting of a wildflower field and it was just doing a lot of spattering then eventually giving some shape to multiple wildflowers in the field. It was funny though as I quickly thumbed through the paintings you posted I thought to myself wow this work sure does look like louise’s lol 😂 I guess there was a reason for that. I was thinking wow she’s really changing up her style. So please accept my apologies but I did totally relate to the dilemma of needing to start clean then when I’m done I’m like what in the world I’m such a mess. I couldn’t imagine what my area would look like if I didn’t clean between each one that would be a total disaster. I can’t wait to do the frog. He is the best!! Totally love him !!

Louise De Masi

Lol....no need to apologize Christine 😝. The spattering wildflower painting sounds like lots of fun!

Katrina Woollatt

Louise, sorry to hear about your eyes...hope they settle down quickly. I really enjoy your tutorials, and the new upcoming ones look wonderful! I'm champing at the bit to get to that adorable mouse on the poppyheads! I did one in colored pencil, now I want to paint a watercolor one...

Barbara bolton

Louise I hope you get well soon thinking of you

Margaret B Smith

Dear Louise, thank you for all you do, I trust that your eyes have healed, they are a vital part of an artist, so I pray that they will stay healthy. I enjoy the progress reports as well as the tutorials as they come through. This last week-end I had a tidy-up session, which I do between each new tutorial. I have everything ready to begin the Lily acrylic painting. The watercolour Lily turned out fine after two attempts.. Still struggle to control the gray, so that it does not look dirty. Each new project is a challenge. My daughter says that I am getting better with each new painting. Many thanks, you have helped me so much. Peggy (Margaret B Smith)

Joel Medalle

I hope you feel better soon! I have this frog on my Ipad and was actually planning to paint it! You must be clairvoyant! You’ve added tutorials that i’ve been wanting to paint! I’m so excited! Get some rest and heal well.

Susan

I cant wait for the kookaburra wren goose and heron xxxx

Louise De Masi

Thanks Joel. I'll get working on the tutorial soon. 😀

Basia

Harvest Mouse 😍... rest your eyes😎, all the best

Leah Russell

oh my god that harvest mouse , i'm in love with! i especially love how you did the fur in watercolor. Hope you are feeling better with your eye that sounds hard to deal with yet you are able to upload. That is great, thank you! xx

Olivia Joy

Wishing your eye a speedy recovery!

Lynette Willeston

Hi Louise.. so happy to be part of your patrons.. just joined a few days ago and I'm busting to try one of your tutorials. I cannot seem to find where they all are . Do you have a drop box at the top somewhere where I can filter through them all please? Including the pencil drawing/stencil thingy?

Louise De Masi

Hi Lynette, Welcome again! I sent you a message with two indexes on it. One has the index on my website where I have created links back here to each tutorial on Patreon. You can click on the image of the painting to find the tutorial. That's here: http://www.louisedemasi.com/new-index I have another clickable tutorial index here on Patreon pinned to the top of the posts page. It's here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/34865676 I think you can only see it pinned to the top if you are signed into Patreon through the internet. Bookmark these indexes somewhere if you can so you can find them whenever you need them. I keep them up to date. All of the files you need for each tutorial are located underneath each video in my message to everyone

Tamara De Luchi

Hi Louise, hope your eye does settle down soon. I'm exactly the same, like to start with a clean and tidy workspace each time I start a new painting. I find it hard to keep workspace tidy while working so glad to know I'm not alone there.

Liliana Klass

Hi Louise. I love your tree frog! Did you post the video on Patreon already? I saw you have something on YouTube but I can’t find it here. This frog is so cute and colorful I’d love to paint him! I hope you are well. All the best. L

Amy Arendsen

I always start painting with a clean, clutter free desk and end up with a big mess too. I tell myself every time I start a new painting that this is the time I won't end up with a mess. 🙄
