Hi everyone,

Here is the Carolina Wren tutorial.

This painting is not too difficult and I hope you enjoy painting this little cutie.

All of the files are attached below my message here. I've included an enlarged version of the line drawing. I've put it on two files so you can print it on two pieces of paper and tape it together. The reference photo was from Pixabay. I've included the link to the photo on the Supplies List.

In other news

I'm currently working on the Red Eyed Tree Frog tutorial. As well as that tutorial I have the Barn Owl from YouTube, the Kookaburra on the post, the Lotus and the Heron that are all in various stages of production. They are coming to Patreon along with some new paintings I have planned.

It's winter here in Australia and our Magnolias are all out in bloom. A few of you have asked for a Magnolia tutorial so I went for a drive last weekend to a nearby cemetery where my dad is. I put some flowers on his grave and had a word to him and then I got my camera out of the car to take some photos of the Magnolias they have planted in the gardens there. They are beautiful and are crying out to be painted. Hopefully I'll be able to compose a good painting from the photos I have.

Stay safe. Stay busy!

Thank you Louise!!! I’m really looking forward to painting this Carolina wren!!

Peggy Bowers

Thank you! It is summer here and my magnolia's are at the end of their blooming season. I am looking forward to that tutorial as well.

Sherie McManaman

Thank you Louise for producing so many tutorials for us! I am especially waiting for the red eyed tree frog!

Karla Sanford

Thank you Louise! I anxiously await the many tutorials you have in production. With each new tutorial, I challenge myself and improve as a watercolor artist.

Marijke de Boer

Lovely wren, I have been distracted by working with pastels lately and have missed my watercolours. This is just what I need to get back into playing with water and colours:)

Marijke de Boer

Am looking forward to a few of the tutorials you mention but was wondering if you still plan to post the bee eater tutorial. I tried to do one myself in water colour but got stranded..... so difficult. Need some courage to continue it!

Louise De Masi

I'll paint another Bee eater Marijke. I wasn't 100% happy with the one I painted so I plan to do another. They are beautiful birds.

Marijke de Boer

Oh that would be fantastic, yes stunning colours bee eaters, but just do not know how to tackle the transitions between the colours. I would love it if you have another go - I promise I will have another go too then:)

santi sree

Very beautiful , thank you Louise De Masi.

karen robinson

Thank you Louise, he's adorable. Can't wait to get started

Sharon E Toombs

Delightful and beautiful. I'm looking forward to painting one of my favorite birds. Thank you Louise for all your hard work. I hope your eyes are close to healing completely.

Fiona Di Pinto (Drawingsinadrawer)

Hi, could anyone tell me if the tutorials are downloadable so l can do them even if if I’m on holiday with no WiFi? Thanks!

Jennifer Abbott

Oh my gosh! She's / he's beautiful!!. Can't wait to give this one a try!🙂 Hope you're doing well & your eye situation is getting better all the time. What happened to you sounds very similar to something my dad went through. I know it was very tiring for him in the beginning and it did take longer to heal than he would've liked! Hang in there! Sending all good wishes to you! 🐦

Louise De Masi

Thanks Jennifer. I'm managing ok. I think the left eye is doing it now too. The close work when I'm painting and at the computer is ok but my vision is strange when I go outside and look long distances. Hopefully it won't take too much longer to correct itself. Thank you! 😘

Lydia Shemain

Louise, you’re a beautiful detailed painter — the feathers are so real, the shading awesome. Fabulous, the bird looks so real. Must be so hard working on such minute detail with your eye bothering you. Hope it clears up soon. Thanks for this lovely tutorial.

Eleanor

Hi Louise. I joined your Patreon group yesterday. I have really enjoyed you YouTube videos and SkillShare classes. I am looking forward to these tutorials. I hope your vision returns to normal soon. I will be getting new glasses in about a week. I have been going with the wrong prescription for a year now. What a pain in the neck! I am sure this vision problem is quite distressing/annoying for you, and I hope it goes away quickly. Thanks! I am looking forward to learning lots of new things. 😀

Louise De Masi

Thank you Lydia. I'm managing with close up work ok. My long distance vision is strange with all the floaters. I'm getting there. 😘

Louise De Masi

Welcome again Eleanor and thank you. That must have been hard for you with the wrong prescription.

Uliana

Thank you! Enjoyed it so much =)

Jennifer Nicholson

Thank you Louise I have just finished this tutorial and am very pleased with the end result. I did find it more difficult than some of the others but with you excellent guidance found it to be a very rewarding experience. I am so thrilled with my experience that I have recommended you to two of my friends who are looking to move their painting experiences to the next level.. Thank You again and I hope you are feeling better these days.

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful! Thank you very much Jennifer. ❤️

Kym Thompson

Hi Louise, right near the end of the video when you added the white flicked feathers near the base of the tail and near the edge of the wings: did you paint over the white afterwards to tone the white down slightly?

Louise De Masi

Hi Kym, No I didn't. When the ink dries it's not as bright as it is when it's wet. Sometimes I'll give it another layer or two if I want it to be whiter otherwise I'll leave it as is.

Is the wren really on A3? It seems small next to your hand😀

Louise De Masi

Yes he sure is. The paper is in landscape orientation. The little wren measures 22cm across from the tip of his beak to the end of his tail and it's 15cm tall from the top of its head to the botton of its lower foot. Maybe I've got big hands 🤷🏼‍♀️😳😝.

crystalheart9

Loved the tutorial of this beautiful little wren. I have seen these in my yard, I like the swoosh of color you put behind your birds. I have got to try this out. Also I need to paint larger I tend to paint too small and it is difficult to get the detail I want. Thanks for this great tutorial

Michelle Michaud

Fun exercise. I love wrens, including Fairy Wrens, which I will try next.

Nicole

Hi Louise. Quick question. When I re wet areas my existing colour lifts off the paper leaving white underneath? I am using the correct weight paper. I am just touching it with the wet brush and it lifts off immediately . Any ideas?

Louise De Masi

Hi Nicole, you will always get a little bit of paint lift when you rewet your paper. Make sure your previous layer is completely dry. I blast mine with the hair dryer on hot for a few minutes. I can't paint without a hair dryer. Dark colours lift more readily than light colours. It may be your paper. It could also be your brushes and the amount of pressure you are putting on them. You need soft brushes with a gentle touch.

Nicole

Thanks Louise. I let it dry overnight. It may be my paper. I usually use arches but using a different brand. And it was on a patch of the darker brown.

Carole

Finished! I enjoyed this very much. It looks so huge compared to the size of the actual bird, that I find it amusing each time I look at it.

Maria Cromer

I love this. Can't wait to give it a go. I watched your video on paper stretching last night. One question...do you do your sketching of your subject before you stretch the paper? Once it's stapled down, you can't trace your drawing on it. Or did I miss that part?

Louise De Masi

You can put it on there before you stretch your paper if you want to. Just be aware that I have found once the graphite has been wet it tends to set it so it's harder to remove. I usually put the drawing on after I have stretched it using the graphite method of scribbling over the back of my line drawing. One day I plan to get a projector which will make this task easier and cleaner.

Maria Cromer

Never thought of that, thank you.
