Hi everyone,

Here is the Red Eyed Tree Frog tutorial for you.

I know, I know, it's another frog. I saw it and I couldn't resist it. I find I have to paint what I'm drawn to and I was drawn to this frog. I have found that if the reference photo doesn't capture my attention and I go ahead and try to paint from it then my painting will often fall flat.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below. I downloaded the reference photo from Wildlife Reference Photo website. It was taken by Michelle Kaiser.

You can download the reference photo yourself. Here is the link: https://wildlifereferencephotos.com/media.details.php?mediaID=66904   You can purchase a subscription with Wildlife Reference Photos for $10 US and that allows you to download 5 photos within 30 days.

I have also put the link to the photo on the Supplies List.

I hope you have fun with it. Happy painting.

Have a fabulous weekend!

💚🐸

Louise, for some reason I can’t get the bubble for the message portion to come to come up for me to type. Thank you the answer to my question.

Jean Andhomer

I couldn't agree with you more - if not moved by the subject, it's never the same outcome. I love all your older tutorials like this, that has a sense of realism to it. Not so fond of loose to the point it looks like it's melting off the page. My friend in Australia fell in love with my horse I made from your tutorial (I am in Canada).... And I am gifting it to her. I wanted to include a little card as I'm so grateful of her friendship. She loves frogs, so this will be perfect for a Thanks for being my friend card ❤️

Louise De Masi

Your friend will adore the horse painting, and the frog card is such a thoughtful touch—what a beautiful way to celebrate your friendship. Thanks so much Jean.💛

April

Thank you so much for another great tutorial Louise. I’m so happy you chose to teach watercolor online)))

Jane

Thank you for this tutorial Louise. This is my first tutorial with you and I love the end result. I learnt a lot doing this and your style of teaching is wonderful. I particularly love how you repeat the colours you have mixed together to achieve the colour you’re painting with; this is invaluable for a relatively new artist. I am excited to learn more from such an awesome teacher.

Louise De Masi

Thank you so much for your lovely message Jane! I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed your first tutorial and found it helpful. Welcome aboard!

Corina Dima

Yesssss! My prayer has been answered! Mr. Frog is here! Thank you, thank you 🙏🏻💚 🐸🧡

Elizabeth lemieux

Can't wait! I painted the other one and get so many comments

MD

Well thank heavens you didn’t resist! Why paint anything that doesn’t make you happy! I’m so hoppy you did! Thank you so much! I need this little guy in my life!

Lynn Benn

It's gorgeous. The colors are so vibrant they just brighten up the day which we all need right now. Thank you for another wonderful tutorial.

Julie Schwindt

You'll always inspire others when you go with what inspires you! Thank-you! :-)

MD

Hi Louise, I’m curious, is there a specific reason why you chose Fabriano paper over Arches paper for this project as both 140lb? Thank you!

Louise De Masi

No not at all. Arches is prefect for it too. I have bought quite a bit of Fabriano Artistico because it's a little bit cheaper than Arches and I'm enjoying painting on it.

MD

Oh, I just watched the video and think you answered my question. Basically because it’s easier to lift off color for highlights and such. thanks! I watched it again and now I see you were referring to Rosemary eradicator working better on Fabriano...:)

MD

Oh ok, thanks so much!

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Thanks for all the effort and time it takes to make these tutorial videos, I hope you know how much we all appreciate it and you!

Mélanie Le Métour

Hi Louise, thank you for this wonderful tutorial!!! Do you know which colour of Winsor & Newton could substitute the Daniel Smith’s Buff Titanium? Thank you

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Melanie. I really don't know of a substitute for Buff Titanium. If I didn't have it and I needed something similar I'd probably try mixing a bit of Chinese White with Raw Sienna or Yellow Ochre or something like that. If you don't have white paint use a very pale layer of a warm yellowy colour - Yellow ochre light, Raw Sienna or even Naples Yellow......very soft though.

Mélanie Le Métour

Ok, I do have Chinese White, I’ll try to mix it up with Raw Sienna or Yellow Ochre, thank you 😊 🙏🏻

I've painted this frog several times before but did not do it any wet on wet. They turned out pretty well. I'm looking forward to doing this because it will allow me see how far I've come in my learning

Margaret B Smith

Thank you Louise, will probably have to give this one a second or third try. I am heavy handed, unfortunately. Still struggling with getting the pigment to water and water in the brush ratios right. Here in Alaska the paper dries really quickly, which is strange, since we are not too far from the tidal bay, between Wasilla and Anchorage. The dishes take ages to dry off - so. The paper must be really thirsty. Due to Covit the availability of paper through on-line purchases in the 'Lower 48' has ceased, fortunately there is Blaines in Anchorage, they did not have the Fabriano Artistico only the Fabriano Studio. So will give you feedback as to that works. Wish you every success in all you do.

Louise De Masi

I hope you enjoy it and see some improvement in your work.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Margaret. Sometimes it helps if you wet the paper twice. Wet it the first time on the area you want to paint and let it almost dry and then wet it again a second time before you paint on it. See if that helps.

Jan Sonneman

I can’t wait to try my hand at this. You did an awesome painting. He makes me smile

Nancy Taylor

I hope to start this tomorrow. I have many toads in my yard. They are young and very small. I find them when I am working in the flower gardens. They are American toads. I found that out when I volunteered as a master naturalist and was told that the toads that sing and sound like UFOs are the American toads. The males sing for hours during the spring evenings by the pond. We end up with hundreds of baby toads. They keep the insects in check, which I thank them for each time I see them as I garden. I frogs and toads are different but they seem closely connected. Thanks so much.

Barb Couilliard

I got goofed up a little bit because on the line drawing on the middle foot there's a line going across between the toes and the arm. I messed up because I didn't see that on the tutorial you actually have a line extending from the bottom toe up onto the arm. So I painted that area green before I realize it! Maybe the line drawing can be updated to show the line extending up from the toe rather than across the toes between the toes and the arm.

River

Yea!! Love the frogs! You are amazing. I will be attempting this next. Thank you

Deb

Hi Louise, I am enthralled by your talent, thank you so much for sharing it. I have never thought of myself as having any artistic ability, but seeing what you do inspired me to try. At 64, I am discovering a whole new side to myself, and with each passing day the confidence, and a being in a happy place grows.

Delores Lopez

United States I Love the tree frog Louise.

Delores Lopez

I loved this tutorial. You are so professional in your painting and teaching.I could never allow myself to be watched so intensely as you do.I do have a question about drawings.Do you modify what you draw so they can be painted?

Louise De Masi

Thank you Delores. Not often. Sometimes though there might be too much going on (too much detail) so I won't draw all of that. I'll be selective about what I want to include. Other times an ear on an animal might be on a weird angle on the reference photo or maybe there's a feather sticking out the wrong way on a bird. On things like that I will probably modify it.

Delores Lopez

Thank you Louise. That was very helpful to me.

Divya Sachdeva

I tried this twice and I found the toes to be very difficult but enjoyed painting this .. its so lively . I will definitely try again. IT takes me weeks to complete one painting as I am working and have a todd as well. And get so impaitent at times to complete and see the final result.. but the fun is in the journey .

Lori

Louise, thank you so much for this tutorial!!! I know I asked you to do this one and I forgot to thank you for it! Your technique has really helped me to become a watercolor novelist! I am so thankful for you!!!!

Audrey McDade

Thank you for the second frog tutorial. I started it today and love the vibrant colors. Thank you for your thorough instruction and detail. I have learned my watercolor technique from you. We all appreciate your talent and gift for teaching. Audrey McDade

Judy Breedlove

This is an awesome tutorial, Louise. It has some great challenges....some I did well, others not so much. But, it has made me more aware of what I'm painting and has made me slow down. Thank you, so much.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Judy and thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

laura frisbie

Hi Louise. I just joined - I don't see how to access the materials other than the video.

Louise De Masi

Hi Laura, welcome! If you are after the files to complete the project they are under my message attached under the video. You'll see them in red font. You click on them and they download to your device. They are always in the same place under each video tutorial message.

Judith McQuoid

I love this tutorial! I love the way my frog turned out and am planning on hanging it in my house! Thank you!

Elena

This tutorial was so fun! Thank you!!

Camila Duque Baeza

Maybe it’s my paper, I’m using fabriano 200grams and it looks patchy and awkward :c I’ll try again on arches paper
