Hi everyone,

This is the first succulent tutorial. It's not too difficult and shouldn't take you too long to complete. There's a lot of wet on wet work throughout and the shadows I glaze on at the end.

I have some succulents growing in pots. I love them but I'm not too good at growing them. They tend to get leggy and untidy. I know you are supposed to cut them and let them form new plants but I don't have the time to fuss with them. If you have any hints or tips about growing them please let me know!

All of the files you need are attached below my message here. I hope to have the blue succulent tutorial available for you next month.

I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

I finished the green succulent, now I’m going to try the blue one. Thanks Louise- you are awesome!

Anne Watman

This is a great tutorial! I really appreciate the chance to practice while still creating an actual painting. I also like that there is a lot of repetition, and only a few colors because I got better as I went along. There were some spots where I got hard lines that I actually liked. I figured out how to re-dampen some of the leaves because they weren’t dark enough. I got better at adding those soft lines, blending and layering. I keep improving on my ability to figure out how much water/paint I need on my brush. And, I’m getting better at handling my brushes overall. I’m starting to think I might end up being good at this!

Louise De Masi

I have no doubt, with your persistence and dedication to learning you will become very good at painting in watercolour Anne. Thank you! ❤️

GWEN

I'm new to watercolor (3.5 months). I just finished the eucalyptus leaves and they turned out beautiful. I'm pleased with it. This one really frustrated me because the template doesn't match what Louise is painting. I'll keep trying!

Chantal

Ok, just finished this tutorial. While you said it wasn’t too difficult or long it was a bit long to me. ☺️ But that is because lack practice. And also because I chose a smaller size , flower just about 6’’ diameter. But one more pleasant tutorial from you. I will try you blue one and maybe give it a go on my own. Thank you

Louise De Masi

Hi Chantal, Thank you! I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. I admire the regular practice you're putting in. Every painting you complete is building your skills, and with that consistent practice you'll find that you naturally become quicker and more confident. Painting it at a smaller size would have made it more challenging too. I hope you enjoy the blue version as well, and I'd love to see what you create if you decide to paint one of your own afterwards. 🥰

Chantal

Thank you ☺️

Cynthia Love

Thank you 😊 this is beautiful. Unfortunately I have no tips for growing succulents lol Like you they either get leggy or just take over the whole house I have a pair of jade plants that are actually holding the window up, or at least that’s what it looks like!

Debbie Smith

Thank you for this one, Louise! My classroom is decorated with succulents, and I can't wait to paint this, display it in my class, and show my students what I've learned from you! If I can learn to paint after 35 years of teaching, they can learn something new, too! You are an inspiration! (Sorry -- I don't know anything about growing succulents; I just enjoy looking at them!)

Debi L.

I love this!

Jacqueline Dyke

Another great tutorial but a bit beyond me. I did not realise it was Intermediate & didn't do well. It's not put me off though. I'll just pick a simpler one next time.

Christine Ellis

You have no idea how excited I feel when I get a message to tell me you have posted a new tutorial. I can’t keep ANY plant so I can’t advise you about succulents. Thank you lovely Louise x

Alison Hendry

I have tons of succulents in my yard in pots all over as they seem to be able to take the abuse of my poor gardening skills. I have the least success with these hens and chicks types, but mostly I just neglect the,

Alison Hendry

ooops, hit a wrong button... I meant them... houston sunshine bakes them and I water very little bits once in a while. I feed them all twice a year. I think packing them in together tightly often helps them survive my abuse. The best part is all the baby lizards that emerge from the depths of the pots and live in the succulents. I hope that helps a little bit Louise. I am sure there is a more scientific way to do it, but that fails for me. Neglect seems to work. 🤣🤣

Hi Louise, succulents like to stay outdoor that indoor. They do require open air environment and indirect sunlight. Watering is needed everyone month to the root. They will grow more and more unhealthy if they stay indoor. That’s my little hints for growing succulents. They will grow so big when they are in the free land.

Bette McDowell

I love this so much and I can't wait to start on it! I love succulents (and all plants, as you can see in my photo, haha). The care you give them really depends on your local conditions. For where I live, it can be much too hot for them to be happy. So while instructions say "full sun", they mean full sun in their natural environment, which is not 110 degree Texas summer. So they get shade all summer and full sun the rest of the year. It can be difficult to find the perfect spot because some love sun more than others. If it freezes, I bring them indoors temporarily. The most important things are to have very well-draining soil (mine has very little actual soil and is mostly rocky) and not overwater. Don't feel bad if you kill them. It's always a possibility with these guys and they're not as easy as people think. I am jealous of people in places like California where they can be planted in the ground and left out all year with no drama. :D

Tatiana Butler

Hi, Louse, You mentioned that you are working on blue succulent tutorial. Can you also choose one with more round, jucie leaves? like this ones, for example:

Louise De Masi

Thank you Christine. Lol- me either. I'm not good with plants in pots. 😝

Louise De Masi

Lol.....Maybe I should feed mine. I love the beautiful pots of them you see in the nurseries where they are all packed in tight. I think they are gorgeous. I worry if I bought something like that they would grow leggy and it would look untidy in no time. Thanks Alison.

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much for the tips Bette! A garden of them would be fabulous.

Louise De Masi

Hi Tatania, I've already painted it. It's a round one like this one. It's on YouTube and Instagram if you want to see it. I'll get the tutorial finished when I can.

crystalheart9

This was such a delightful tutorial, I will give it a try. Thanks for your great teaching skills.

Nickie

Thanks for your tutorials. I hope to do the lion that I saw on You Tube. You are amazing!

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Nickie. Thank you! The lion will be on here before the end of the year.

karen robinson

Just finished the succulent. It was such a fun painting to do. Looking forward to doing the blueish succulent. Thank you Louise

Lydia Shemain

Louise, this is Gorgeous. Absolutely beautiful. The blending of the colours OMG just amazing. It is with sadness I will be taking a break at the end of this month as I am finding it difficult juggling two courses — the loose water colour course takes much of my time. But, I will be back — you are the best. See you soon. Learnt so much from you. THANK YOU dear Louise.

Aleksandra Byers

I think I'll try this one now since it isn't too time consuming and I won't feel overcommitted, time constraints! I'm so happy to have one lined up! And here in CA, they grow so well without little to no care, I have to rip them off and lay them on empty patches of rocks in my townhome community for anyone to take if they wish. The gardeners drag them away when they come, but I leave more laying around eventually. It's like a game, Lol.

Janis Dolan

Hello Louise, I trust you are well. I am struggling with this tutorial but I am determined to conquer it. I think it is because there are many intricate steps involved in getting that super finish you do. But then again, you have been doing it 20 years, me, I only 20 days it seems. Onwards and upwards.

Louise De Masi

Give yourself time Janis. I probably make it look easy and it's not. Look at my early paintings and you can see where I started. I did a post here on Patreon- I'm not sure if you've seen it.

Janis Dolan

Today I am going to try this succulent painting once more. I hope have learned something useful since last I tried it. I hate it, but should persist until I can call it progress.

Louise De Masi

That's a good way to learn Janis. Paint it more than once. That's something I'm doing a lot of lately.

Jessie Doherty

hi Louise, I love this succulent, but when I'm painting with sap green (Winton professional paint), I find my green sometimes separates into green and burnt sienna color, is this a problem with winsor & newton sap green? What brand of sap green do you use?

Louise De Masi

Hi Jessie, I haven't noticed my Sap Green separating at all. I use Winsor and newton Sap Green.

Jessie Doherty

Hmm... then my paint must be old. I'll buy another tube and see if it makes a difference. Thank you so much!
