Hi everyone,

Here's a fairly simple Holly tutorial just in time for Christmas.

I did this painting with beginners in mind and I tried to keep it fairly simple. There's no reference photo because I painted it without one. I drew a holly leaf and went from there.  I paint a practice leaf first so if you are very new to painting in watercolour - paint the practice leaf a few times if you need to. It might be easier if you don't make the leaf too small for yourself either. My leaves were about 7cm long by 4cm wide (2.7" by 1.5").

The line drawing and my finished painting is attached below.

I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you Louise! Very kind of you take the time - you must be like us all and think will I be ready for Christmas! Do you spend Christmas day on the beach? After growing up in the UK I found it very strange when my husband and I lived near Cape Town for 7 years - and spent Christmas round our daughter's pool!

I was just thinking of painting Holly leaves for a Christmas card. Perfect timing and thank you!!

My pleasure Nettie. Thank you! That would have been an unusal experience for you. We do go to the beach when we have Christmas here at home. There is a lovely reserve here that we go to. It's an inlet to the beach so the water is calm and not too deep. There's picnic tables, barbecues and toilets. This year I'm heading to my mum's place which is about 9 hours away. One day I'd love to experience a white Christmas.

I had a very dear friend who lived in NSW - they moved from a larger town to Huskisson - I think they liked it as the beach was close by. We don't get many white Christmases anymore - climate warming - but they do get a lot of snow up North (I am in Norfolk) but whether it comes at the right time one never knows - I can only remember 1 or 2 Yuletides when it snowed!

Lovely! I listened to the Nina Rycroft interview, very interesting.!You have my permission to take January off!! Surely many of us would agree you need time off to recharge and be ready for a productive year!! (You don't want to burn yourself out!). And we love your work so much, that we look forward to another productive year! So please it won't matter if we don't have projects for a few weeks :-)

Michelle Wainer

I agree with Maria above. Rest and recharge Louise.

I would like to see you paint with a Holly leaf on the side and see how you interpret the real leaf or a different leaf

Gea

Thank you. I needed this.

Thanks a lot. As a brand newbie this was very helpful.

So relaxing and lovely. I learned so much from this tutorial. Thank for remembering those of us just starting out.

Oh my, I can’t make the color match. Also, we have a huge holly tree in the yard. It looks very different, so I took samplesto paint. I’m sure there’s many species of Holly trees and I’m most familiar with the ones that have all the kind of ridged sides however our tree only has two ridges on the sides of the leaves and they’re very leathery. Also they’re very dark green. The berries of course are red but they come in really strange clusters and have their own little kind of branches. Beautiful though because of this time of year holly tree is just completely covered with red berries and it’s gorgeous

BTW, the processor keeps “correcting” to Halle???

I kept trying to comment we we have a holly tree in the backyard, and it’s very different then the Riched leaves. It’s very leather and it has two ridges on each side and of course the red berries and it’s very beautiful at this time of year. I suspect however there’s probably many species of poly and the one that shows the mini ridges is probably the one that we are most familiar with because of Christmas. Anyway I took a sample and I’m going to try to paint it which is gonna be kind of hard because it has very leathery shiny leaves. But I’m Very inspired by the tutorial.

Very beautyful. I though think it is very weird that your w&n sap green looks vibrant, bright and clean ..... mine looks just mossy/muddy (...maube olive-y) .... i just really dont underatand that.

Thank you for this perfect tutorial. It helps me to refresh what I've learned from you and to be patient. I would love for you to take a break during the next month for yourself, You deserve some time off, You are appreciated.

Louise De Masi

Thank you! That's weird about the Sap Green......I've no idea why it would look different for you if it's the same brand 🤔.

Maree Millard

I agree with Karen. Please take care of yourself, Louise.

I've had the same issue. My first tube was bright and my next was awful. I've started using Van Gogh's sap green after someone in Louise's Facebook group recommended it.

I have just done this tutorial my sap green is olive colour but nice. I am new to your tutorials but love them. Thank you. Next will be the peas and chilies will leave the goose for a bit till I’m a bit better. I have done most of the LMA tutorial.
