Hi everyone,

Here is the Lion tutorial. I've broken this tutorial into 2 videos and this is Part 1.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/44897651

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

I purchased the reference photo from Wildlife Reference Photos. It was taken by Gloria Anderson. Here is the link if you'd like to download it yourself: https://wildlifereferencephotos.com/media.details.php?mediaID=70781

If you'd like to download it you need to create an account with Wildlife Reference Photos and purchase a $10 USD subscription. That allows you to download 5 photos within a month.

I'll put this tutorial on the indexes.

Dom has been updating my neglected website for me. He's formatted things better and deleted pages I didn't need and I'm much happier with it now 😃.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Jan. Happy Birthday to your grandson. I hope he treasures your painting. 🥰

Watercolor

I finished painting this lion today and am pleased with the result. It’s going to my granddaughter for Christmas. Thank you for showing me how to have the courage to use unexpected color in unexpected places. Such a valuable lesson!!

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful! I hope your granddaughter loves it. I'm sure she will. Thank you Diane.

Kathleen Mitchell

This is a challenge for me, I am determined to do a great job on it, will be a gift to my grandson and granddaughter. I agree with your tip not to look at the reference photo I as well got lost in it I haven't painted for years , I only had a few lessons 24 yrs ago s call me a beginner. Thank you for the reference drawings as well. ! Have a wonderful day!!! I know they will treasure it. At times I freeze before painting and have to calm down and let it flow. This is a bit advanced for me its just getting it started that is my problem.

Louise De Masi

Take it step by step Kathleen and remember it's just a piece of paper. Have fun!

Suranga Ketkar

Hello Loiuse, I love your paintings and have been following your lessons for a while. This lesson starts with your graphite study. I was wondering if you could tell what were the deciding factors for values you have in graphite study from the original photo. Thank you for your time.

Louise De Masi

Hi Suranga - to see values more easily I make the reference photo black and white. That makes it much easier to render it in graphite.

Shelly Solle

I was looking for a new one to do. This looks so cool. Thanks Louise! You are the best! ❤️

Basia

Nettie Moss

Thank you so much for this Louise! it will go on my 'to do' list! I do hope you are considering our suggestions that you take a break - and lighten your workload a bit in the New Year! Maybe do your YouTube teasers every 10 - 12 days instead of every week as one idea?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Susan. I told him. He's beaming from ear to ear 😁.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Nettie. I'll take about two weeks off over Christmas. We are heading down south to spend Christmas with my mum and then when we come home I'll have my daughter here with her husband for a few days. 💕

Pam Causey

Aleksandra Byers

Oh so beautiful, can't wait to try this one Louise! Love the softness!

Pauline Ferguson

Thanks Louise, will give this beautiful boy a try...... love the big cats. Have a wonderful Christmas🎄 with your family and enjoy your well deserved break. See you next year 🦁🦁

Patrica Clarke

This is so fabulous Louise. I can’t wait to give it a try. The only colour I don’t have is gold ochre. Can you suggest a substitute?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Patrica, hmmmm 🤔 I'm thinking - Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna with some Burnt Sienna mixed into it, or Quinacridone Gold with some Burnt Sienna in it or Brown Ochre with some bright yellow mixed in it. It doesn't have to be exactly the same....... think any earthy orange colour.

Patrica Clarke

Thank you for such a speedy reply. I have some of the colours you suggested so will play with them. I have very much enjoyed being a member of your patreon group and learnt a lot from your excellent teaching. I hope you have a lovely Christmas and an exciting New Year. Like you, we are expecting our first grandchild early next year- can’t wait.

Louise De Masi

That's good. Thanks so much Patrica and congratulations! That's wonderful news for you. We'll be able to compare grandparent notes! 😂💕

Louise De Masi

Thanks Pauline. Merry Christmas to you too. Have a fabulous and safe new year as well.

Jane Newman

Hi Louise. Can you explain how you pick your colors? I love the vibrancy and the freshness of your paintings. When I looked at the lion, I didn’t see the colours that you had put in there and yet they add so much thanks

Louise De Masi

Hi Jane, Thank you! It's a combination of what I see and what I know about colours. I start by looking for the main colours - in this case earthy browns and oranges. I choose the colours I have that are similar to those so that I don't have to do much mixing. Then I look hard for other colours I might see. Sometimes I might see yellow or green or blue and I exploit them. So I will take advantage of those colours to add interest to the painting. Then I go with what I know about colours. If I'm painting a predominately warm painting I may try to add some cool colours here and there to balance it. I know that warm colours advance and cool colours recede so I'm mindful of that when I paint. Sometimes it might be a specific mood I'm trying to convey so my colour choices will reflect that mood I want. Other times I play. I experiment. I'm not afraid to throw in colours I don't see, because I've used them in the past, I know they work together. Have fun with colour. The value of a colour is more important than the colour itself. So how dark or how light you put the colour on. That's what needs the most attention.

Jane Newman

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to give it a try!

Leslie J Galloway

What an amazing painting of an amazing animal. Your explanation of color choices and values (above) is very helpful. I think that we forget or as a beginner don’t even know that value is key, even though color gets the credit. I don’t know who said that but it gives you permission to explore color within the values.

Maria Eadie

Hi Louise, Beautiful painting I got so inspired by it that I'm going to give it a try. I'm new at watercolor but I'm going to give it a try!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Maria. It's not easy but I hope you have fun with it. There's lots to learn.
