Hi Louise. I love your lion 😍. I was wondering, if you were to paint a wolf, or a fox, or a bear, how would you go about dealing with their fur? Would you just pick out the most prominent fur patterns and negative paint them? Or negative paint most of it? Or some other method? I would like to paint those subjects but I'm not sure how to do that.

Louise De Masi

Hi Faye, Thank you! I have a video coming out on YouTube this weekend (hopefully-if we get it done) where I paint a West Highland Terrier. It should help you see how I simpify the process. It included simpifying and painting in key shapes and also painting negatively.

Sole

Hi Louise, I am following this beautiful painting and I am enjoying the process a lot. Thank you so much for your teachings in watercolor!

Coleen

He is magnificent, what talent. I’m always in awe!

Coleen

Hi Louise, this might seem an odd question, but was there a time when you “overpainted I always seem to over paint I start out with some white showing and then lose it or swap the paper with a color. Do you have any techniques to stop somebody from doing this?

Louise De Masi

Hi Coleen - yes most definitely! I look back at paintings I did a few years ago and I can see how overworked they are- I still do it. Not overworking a painting comes with years of practice so don't be hard on yourself. Being aware that you are doing it is a great starting point to correcting it. I suggest doing some studies of your subject first. That way you can see where you are overworking it and try not to do that in subsequent paintings. Also try to use bigger brushes and more confident brush strokes.

Dallas Milligan

Hi Louise, I struggled with this one after a lay off of not painting. I've done 2 versions and would love your feedback if possible. Where do I upload photos? I'll go back to some easier paintings for now. 🙂🙏

Louise De Masi

Hi Dallas. Coming back to painting after a break can feel a bit wobbly. You’re definitely not alone there. You’re welcome to upload your photos right here in the chat section on Patreon. I love seeing what everyone creates. I don’t offer individual feedback though, just because there are so many students and I wouldn’t be able to keep up in a fair way for everyone. But please do share your versions because it’s always lovely to see the different interpretations. If you have a specific question about your painting - I can answer that. Hope you understand. Thanks!

Wow this is so pretty!

Hi Lesley, If you go to Part 1 you'll see that I've put a link for the reference photo in my message under the video. The link is also on the Supplies List. It's a photo from Wildlife Reference Photos.

Thank you, Louise. This is stunning.

Hi Louise, I have only watched, so far, to end of part 1 - wanted to ask: at what stage do you remove the masking fluid? thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Nettie, I think I only used it on the white highlight of each eye.....? It would have been after I finished painting the eye.

Nettie Moss

I think you did the inner corners of the eyes - you showed us up close; I'll see when I get there what I'll do! Have watched this to the end - it is amazing{ reminds me again why being a Patron here is sooo right for me! Thank you

Nettie Moss

It's me again - I have just rewatched the whole tutorial through again as I plan - fingers crossed - to do it over Easter: I had started but wasn't happy with my sketching so re-did it yesterday. This is perfection if ever there is in this medium - I sit transfixed watching the paint flowing and mixing so magically! The whiskers scare me: imagine if I did something I was happy with - then messed them up! I shall say a little prayer! Thanks for offering this superb tutorial to us and have a happy Easter.

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much Nettie. Good luck with it. Remember it's only paper! I hope you have a lovely Easter too. 😘

Yvonne de Visser

This is so beautiful Louise! You are a master in watercolor! ❤

Jean Andhomer

Hi Louise, mine turned out like the raggedy lion that got attacked by an elephant compared to yours - but I absolutely loved making it. Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorials.

Louise De Masi

Hi Jean,....lol.....😝. I'm glad you enjoyed it. My pleasure and thank you!

Bonnie Williams

I just watched this tutorial in full and am so amazed at your choice of colors. I know you said you did a color study on this -- do you have a tutorial or YouTube video on making color choices and how you decide that. Your lion is absolutely gorgeous but I think I need to do a few easier ones before I tackle this one!

Louise De Masi

Thank you! I am making a tutorial about temperature bias and colours I would buy if I was just beginning to paint in watercolor. It's coming out on YouTube on the 26th November. I'll post it here on Patreon too without the ads. I don't have any others specifically about colour choices at the moment but I can work on that for next year 🤞🏻.

Bonnie Williams

Ooh I’ll look forward to that (this is Bonnie btw—I think our patroon account has both our names on it)
