Hi everyone,

Here is the Flamingo tutorial.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

I purchased the reference photo from Wildlife Reference Photos. It was taken by Evelyn Harrison. Here is the link if you’d like to purchase it yourself: https://wildlifereferencephotos.com/media.details.php?mediaID=16516

I've also put the link to the reference photo on the Supplies List.

I've included a photo of my finished painting with this tutorial. I think it shows the colours of my painting better than the scan of my painting. I have a new scanner that I'm getting used to and it alters the colours slightly so use the photo for colour checking.

If you are experiencing audio difficulties it is more than likely you don't have the latest version of the Patreon app. I don't use the Patreon app. I always sign into Patreon through my internet browser and never have a problem. If you can't hear audio either download the latest version of the app or don't use the app and log into Patreon through your internet browser instead and that should fix it.

Have fun with this painting. I hope you enjoy it.

I'll put it on the indexes so you can find it again when you are ready to paint it. Please use the indexes below when you are looking for something. I keep them up to date.

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Linda

Thank you Louise! I’m a pastelist so I’m really looking forward to this new medium for me! It’s a completely different animal. But I can’t wait to try. I’ve watched several on your tutorials since I joined your Patreon and have a question! What is the top most important brushes you have that you simply cannot do without!!! Thanks!!

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Linda. Thank you! My top, most important brushes are my Da Vinci Maestro's series 35. A number 5 and 7 I use a lot. They have a beautiful point and are a joy to use. They are expensive though as they are sable. Having said that- this year I am trying out other brushes because I would like to move away from sable brushes to a vegan option. I am trying out Da Vinci Colineos and Casaneos as well. I will also be trying the Jackson home brand brushes later this year so once I've given them a whirl I'll let everyone know what I think of them.

Linda

Thanks so much Louise! I really appreciate the very quick reply! I will check them out! Can’t wait to go through and find a few beginner projects here.

Terri Robertson

I finished my first tutorial with you Louise, and I really enjoyed it. Thank you for your detailed explanation and filming - it's really really helpful! I could not get the shadow lines as soft as yours, no matter how much I blended them out, so I couple of the feathers look 'outlined'. I used Daniel Smith Quin.Rose and maybe it was just a bit too 'sharp' in hue, even though I dulled it with a bit of the Scarlet Lake. No matter, not the end of the world - my friends love it, and my flamingo-mad friend has claimed it. Thank you 🙏🥰

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful Terri! I'm glad you enjoyed painting it and I hope your friend loves it. 🥰

Yvonne Walton

Hi Louise I would like to do the flamingo, but I don’t have Danielle Smith’s orange. I have shrinker.satum red, WN Indian yellow winsor orange, new Babbage and caduim free orange. Which one would you suggest or do I make an orange.

Louise De Masi

Hi Yvonne, Either the Winsor Orange or Cad Free Orange will work well I think. Have fun with it!

Yvonne Walton

Thank you but I made my own in the end with Windsor Lemon and Scarlet Lake

Yvonne Walton

It didn’t turn out to bad. Gave one to a friend who loves flamingos.

Marika Roth

I have WN transparent orange, PO 107. Is this a good substiute for Pyrol O. thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Marika - use your transparent orange. That should be ok.

BonnieB

Really enjoyed this tutorial! The paint bleed makes it look so much more interesting. I did this on Aquabord, so I had a few challenges getting the paint to spread out the way I'd like. You really have to encourage the paint with alot more water. One thing I noticed is that when I tried to remove some of my original paint bleed, the clay surface appeared to get a polished look afterward. I'm assuming that this rough clay surface somehow got scrubbed off in the process. Have you noticed any issues with this lifting process on Aquabord?

Louise De Masi

Hi Bonnie - yes the surface is delicate despite its appearance. I use the eradicator brushes and filbert brushes to remove paint. I've also realised that using an eraser on the surface isn't a good idea because of what you mentioned.

Hi Louise, I just have a question about colours and paint. The only orange I have is the cotman cadmium orange. I've replaced most of my cotman paints with either DS or W&N. Is it possible to mix pyrrole red DS with a yellow like Hansa yellow light to make orange that is suitable? Also I was wondering is Daniel Smith French ultramarine and Burnt Sienna more granulating than the Winsor and Newton? Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Natalie. Yes, you can mix Pyrrole Red (DS) with Hansa Yellow Light to make a vibrant orange - it’s a great alternative to a tube orange. Just adjust the ratio for warmth or brightness. And yes, I believe Daniel Smith’s French Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna are generally more granulating than the Winsor & Newton versions. My favourite French Ultramarine is Schmincke - it has excellent granulation.

Tjaard

Hello Louise, I will do this tutorial. Therefore I bought the reference photo on Wildlife Reference Photos. And since also take photos of animals I start to contribute to the site of Wildlife Reference Photo’s. I will see what happens with that photo’s.

Louise De Masi

I hope you enjoy it Tjaard and good luck with the photos.

Julie Smout

I tried this tutorial last year and had a fail, but this year I’m loving it. The colours are a bit out of my comfort zone but I so wanted to try the technique on the feathers. Only half way through but going back and watching your amazing tutorial, I know I’m on a winner this time. Thanks so much Julie

Louise De Masi

That’s so nice to hear Julie 😊 Sometimes things just click when we come back to them later. I’m really glad you gave it another go.

Peggy Bowers

So beautiful, can't wait to give it a try!

Leisa

Oh I can’t wait ... I need to order more paint...lol thank you Louise xx

Megha Pattar

Oh , I love this one, thank you for posting LOUISE.

Shellee Hoyt

It would be awesome if you did a portrait of a husky. love all your tutorials

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Really enjoyed watching you work on this one, Louise! The colors are so fun and bright, this will be great to try! 💜💛💚

Christine Srikala

lovely tutorial ,,,Hi Louise. Could you perhaps look at painting an OX (Chinese New year animal) in your long list? ;)

Susan Mayhew

Hi Louise, Lovely tutorial, and colors, also got a lot out of the "jacket" tutorial. Just bought a "Flower Palette by Darwin." It is about 7" and fits nicely in the center of the Robax palette, is light weight and like porcelain, non-staining and easy to clean.

Patrica Clarke

So beautiful-I love the combination of loose and detail.

Lynn Woodward

So beautiful. You know you make everything look so easy, I will be attempting this even as a beginner LOL

Kari Howry

I have been waiting for this one! I am so excited to paint the flamingo. Will probably start tonight.

Kari Howry

Louise, when I try to Download the line drawing both the smaller and A3 size comes out with partial lines on several (3-6 )pages.

Louise De Masi

Hi Kari. I just downloaded them myself and the files are ok. It's something happening on your end. Log into Patreon through your internet browser and try doing it that way. Don't use the Patreon app. I use Safari to log into Patreon. If you are still having problems after you do that let me know and I'll have to email them to you.

Hanadi

Hi Louise I got everything prepared but when I started playing the lesson I can’t seem to hear anything!! I tried other patreon videos i can hear all well, I tried another post by you and 8 hear fine! Is it somethings Vimeo that I have to set? Hope you can help

Louise De Masi

Hi Hanre, You may not have done all your updates on the Patreon app. I find it's best to sign into Patreon through your web browser. I use Safari but I have read that Google Chrome works best for watching videos. The Patreon app is very glitchy. I don't use it at all.

Hanadi

I checked for an update there were none but I did as you said and connected through the web and it worked thanks.. I use the app always as it’s easier to find but having these issues is annoying they should fix it...thanks a lot Louise for all your tutorials and your help💕

Vee

I watched you paint this lovely flamingo for the umpteenth time last night. I think you must really paint, photograph, edit etc 22 out of the 24 hours of the day! There surely cannot be another artist who puts so much care and effort into their tutorials. I also watched you do the Hyacinth Macaw yesterday....I am in awe! Just wish I had enough experience to attempt either of them. A heartfelt thank you, dear Louise for these unrivalled tutorials XXXXXX

Kara Sweeney

I just finished painting this gorgeous bird! I loved it so much. You are a wonderful teacher Louise!!

Tiphanie

YES !! I paint this one twice and be so happy with the final version ! If you want to see mine here is mine instagram account : @quandlechatnestpasla ! Thank you for this tutorial :)

Louise De Masi

Thanks Tiphanie! Yours looks lovely and clean and fresh!

Kris Groelsema

I so enjoyed this tutorial and I'm so happy with my result! Thank you so much!

Marika Roth

Ok, here I am again, Louise, asking about paint substitutes. I have so many watercolors now and hate to keep adding so would like to know if I can use WN Transparent Orange in place of DS Pyrole Orange. I also have Mission Gold Orange and Vermillion. Once again, thank you for your wonderful instruction and sharing your passion for watercolor.

Louise De Masi

Hi Marika, There's no need to buy more - use either the Mission Gold Orange or the Transparent orange. Have fun with it. 🧡

Tonya Roberts

I love this, but I wish the line drawing and the penciled in feathers you did after you started into your tutorial looked alike -- this is most frustrating!! I noticed it with the seagull feathers as well.
