Hi everyone,

Here is the Eastern Kingbird tutorial. This little fellow was fun to paint and it has a simple background that's easy to achieve. The bird is not too difficult to paint but take your time with it and don't rush those wings. According to Wikipedia these little birds are native to North America and they head south down into South America during the winter. I was attracted to it because of the pose. I love those little wings extended out.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

The reference photo was taken by Pete Nuij and I downloaded it from Unsplash website here: https://unsplash.com/photos/-ekzrxkYD7Y   I've also included the link to the photo on the Supplies List.

As well as this watercolour painting I also did a graphite drawing of this little bird and I enhanced it with watercolour. I posted a video on YouTube about it here: https://youtu.be/wzeDHgPVDF0  I have included a copy of my finished graphite drawing (with watercolour embellishments) as a file for you to download here under this video. Don't confuse the graphite drawing with the watercolour version I did with this tutorial.  I have labelled the graphite version: 'Eastern Kingbird graphite and watercolour version Louise De Masi.' I've included it here in case any of you want to try it in graphite using the YouTube video.

I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you for all of your birthday messages over the weekend. You made my birthday extra special. 🥰

The Tulip tutorial will be posted before the end of June.

When you are searching for a tutorial always use the indexes I have made (links below). It's much easier than using the search feature here on Patreon. All of my tutorials are on those indexes. I keep them up to date.

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Mine does this too. Using same paper and weight. Cold Press. Curious on this as well...

Louise De Masi

Hi Stephanie, Did you use staples as well as gummed tape? Has the gummed tape lost its adhesion to the watercolour paper?

stephanie jans-Brantner

NO. I shall try that. I have a foam board. Not technically gator board. Foam. I suppose one can re use though even with staples. Does it help to use a heavy book on top of wet paper? Keep it flat as it's drying?

Louise De Masi

You don't need any heavy books when you stretch the paper correctly. Have you watched my paper stretching tutorial? You need to use something stronger than foam as a base because I don't think the gummed tape would stick to it and staples won't hold the paper in place. It might also bow like a banana as the paper dries. You can use gator board which has a hard outer core or you can use a timber board. A timber board would need to be sealed with a few coats of sealer before you use it. You'd also need a builder's stapler if you decide to use a timber board. If you haven't watched the paper stretching tutorial- it's on the indexes, or copy and paste this link into your browser: https://www.patreon.com/posts/31443575. Let me know if you have any more questions about stretching paper.

I did this bird when you first posted it. It turned out beautiful, and I would like your permission to donate it to our local hospice for their annual art auction. I would write on the back "From a tutorial by Louise De Masi. What do you think?

Louise, I have a photo of a Western Kingbird in about the same pose. I would love to share it if you think it might be something you and everyone would like to do. The Westerns have yellow breasts. 😊 kathy

Louise De Masi

Thank you Kathy. That's very kind of you. You could post it in the Facebook group if you are a member.

Janet

Quick question. I stretched my paper for the first time before doing this this background and let it dry overnight. I noticed the paper buckled quite a bit although it has calmed down. Is it normal for the paper to buckle even after stretching? I'm using Arches 140lb. cold press. Just wondering what your experience has been.

Louise De Masi

Hi Janet, No it's not normal for the paper to do that. Something has gone wrong through the stretching phase. Most likely the gummed tape hasn't stayed stuck. If it's still on the board you can send me a couple of photos of it and I'll have a look. ldemasi@iprimus.com.au
