Hi everyone,

Here is Part 1 of the Tulip tutorial.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/53138494

In this tutorial I do some glazing where I paint a transparent wash of one colour over another to change the colour. I made a video on YouTube where I paint a quick glazing chart https://youtu.be/cnr8LjIOj1s. Have a look at that if you'd like to try making your own glazing charts.

When you paint this tulip - don't rush. Enjoy the process. I painted it over a few days and I'd already painted this particular tulip once before, a few years ago. I take regular breaks when I'm painting because it can be very tiring.

All the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. I may have overdone the progress photos (there's a lot of them 🥴) but I've included them to help you with your painting. There's a scan of my finished painting so you can see it clearly and there's also a photo of my finished painting. I've included the photo as well because the scan alters the colours slightly and I feel the photo gives a better indication of the colours of my painting.

I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

This is the YouTube video that brought me here to become a member. Just watching your videos on YouTube has helped me so much! I love painting birds, and flowers and your videos have created beautiful breakthrough moments for me over the last few weeks! I wanted to give back for all your great free instruction. Looking forward to digging deeper and growing in my knowledge 🌸

I’ve noticed that on some of your “newer” tutorials you started adding more progress photos. Thank you! That is so helpful, and it takes away some of the stress in following along. I’m not sure when I started with you now, but I think it might have been March. I’ve made so much progress, and have a lot more confidence. I’m finally starting to get better at wetting my paper, which was either too wet, but normally not wet enough. Yay!

Barbara Ford

Is this a particular type of tulip? It is so beautiful but not the typical closed-up bloom?

Louise De Masi

I'm no tulip expert but I think it might be a parrot tulip Barbara.

Nancy McRae

Hey Louise. How do I remove the white box with all of the videos I can access. It covers some of the video in the right hand corner. Thanks L

Louise De Masi

Hi Nancy, Dom here. I'm not sure what white box you are seeing. I'll send you a direct message.

Bren

Beautiful!! I just finished the single red orange tulip tutorial. This will definitely go on my paint list. Thank You!!!! ❤️

Olivia Joy

Thank you so much Louise! All the progress photos are so helpful because we can see if where we're up to looks right!

Louise De Masi

That's good to know. Thanks Olivia. I worried that I went overboard with this one. 💕

Olivia Joy

Sometimes when I'm painting on my own and not a tutorial, I look at the page and think this is turning out terrible. I have to make myself push through to the end before I can see I'm happy with the work.

Olivia Joy

So I especially like progress photos when following someone else because then I know I'm on the right track early on 😁

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Louise, I'm just downloading the 'progress photos' before watching the video and I can tell from the development of colors that this will be really fun to paint! Yet another one I can't wait to get to.... so many choices, so little time! Thanks for keeping us busy and happy! 💜💛💚😘👩‍🎨

Nancy Guenther

I agree! They are so helpful and I also use them before the tutorial to decide if my skill level is high enough to attempt the painting.

Jenn Witlox

This is an absolutely beautiful tulip and I had to do the tutorial straight away! It came out pretty good but I am trying again today, I love it so much! Thanks Louise!

Kathy Wilden

Hi Louise, I don’t have Viridian so could I use DS hooker’s green instead or do you have another suggestion?

Louise De Masi

Hi Kathy, you could try Hooker's Green or Winsor green (blue shade or yellow shade), or Phthalo Green. See what they look like when you mix them with yellow. It doesn't matter if it's a different green to mine. Mix something that you find pleasing yourself.

Vee

Dear Louise, thank you for this beauty! Cannot wait to get my teeth into it! I just love your flowers and birds, and always get so excited seeing your posts. Thank you for your in depth tutorials, to a newbie they are just the ultimate.... I trust your hubbie and grand baby are both doing very well. Love and best wishes to youxxx

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Vee. Dom and grandson are doing very well - thank you! Love and best wishes to you too.💕😘

Sumathi Vikram

Hi Louise , I have quin red from DS. Is it the same as the WN Quin red ? I realized it after I painted for a bit .

Louise De Masi

Hi Sumathi. W and N Quin Red pigment code is PR209. DS Quin Coral is pigment code PR209. DS Quin Red is pigment code PV19. It will be a bit different to mine but it shouldn't matter.

Sumathi Vikram

Okay . I was thinking how yours looks soo much more orange than mine and that’s when I looked at the tube to see that the make was different . I’ll continue with the DS and see what happens then .

Jeanie Miller

i just LOVED this tutorial. Loved learning the glazing and mixing of colors on the paper. Thank you for this one Louise!
