Hi everyone,

Here is the seashells tutorial. In this tutorial I paint 3 different seashells (4 altogether - 2 of them are the same). I begin with the easiest shell and they gradually get more difficult.

The second painting of the two shells with the brown markings begins at about the 18.21 mark, while the third shell, the most difficult, begins at about the 41.42 mark.

All of the files you need to complete the paintings are attached below my message here.

I hope you enjoy painting them.

Tutorials still to come are the Faded Rose, the Protea, the Galah and the new Barn Owl.

Louise

They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Louise, I live in Melbourne, have you considered doing an in-person workshop? You are such an amazing water colour artist, teacher and mentor.

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Loren. I have considered doing face to face workshops especially now since I have the studio. At the moment I'm focussed on my online work but it might be something I do down the track.

Loren Patafta

well if you do then i'm first on the list LOL!!

colleen

I enjoyed painting these shells, I did waste too much paint mixing the gray but I guess practice makes perfect. Thank you Louise. 💖

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Colleen. I'm glad you enjoyed painting them.

Sharon Pardon

hi louise are the outline drawings able to be made smaller? i only want to paint say a5 i think it is

Louise De Masi

Hi Sharon. You can print to whatever size you choose by selecting the print size in your printer. If you select A5 paper, for example, and "fit to paper" your printer will fit the drawing to an A5 and print for you. If you only have A4 paper, print at about 70% and that will give you an A5 sized drawing. Let me know how you go.

maureen reid

Hi Louise, as always enjoyed this tutorial, love everything you do. I would like a bit of advise on how you decide whether to go for wet on wet or wet on dry, I do tend to get a bit confused. Many thanks.

Louise De Masi

Hi Maureen, Thank you! I recently posted a video about that on my YouTube channel. Copy and paste this link into your browser to see it: https://youtu.be/GJBTVg9Rj5I I hope it answers your question.

Mahira

I have had so much fun with these and felt so accomplished painting these! thank you.

Mahira

absolutely delightful. your teaching was so on point, I could follow along so easily. thank you

Louise De Masi

Thank you Mahira. I'm really pleased you enjoyed painting them. 💖

Chantal

This was such a treat to do! I normally would have gotten lost in détails which gets me into trouble, but here Louise gradually takes us from the simplest way to paint a complex shape to a very detailed one without over doing it! Bravo!

Chris Churchley

Just fabulous - I completed the first two and am now sizing up the scallop! Would love a nautilus … 😉

alex waterville

Hi Louise, thanks for this but I can't get the link to video to work! Am I being too keen? Xx

Louise De Masi

Hmmm.......It's working for me but let me check the settings.

Louise De Masi

Refresh your page and let me know if it's working now for you Alex.

These shells are perfect to practice on in my new watercolor journals. Building my confidence before I try the larger book with a bigger subject.. ( Nervous ) These are Etchr watercolor books with really good paper inside them. It came in 3 graduated sizes. I am also painting things more than once hoping I make progress. I Always learn something in each one I do. Then I try in the larger sketchbook. Thanks for all you do for us! 🖌🎨🙏🧡

Mary Orestuk

Hi, Is anyone having a problem printing the 2nd and 3rd shells. The first one printed fine but the other two, 2 blank sheets print for each. I tried it a few times with the same results. Thanks in advance. I would draw them but that scallop shell is a tricky one for me.

Claire

Looks great Louise. I look forward to giving them a go.

Simi

Hey Louise, when will we learn to paint a penguin? 😊

Louise De Masi

Hi Mary, save them to your computer before you try to print them and also don't try to do it through the app. Sign into Patreon through your web browser instead and see if that helps.

Marie

Very excited to paint the seashells! Thank you Louise!

Lydia Frazier Bosley

As always, I so enjoyed watching this video, Louise! The colors in the shells are so simple, harmonious and pleasing ~ another project to look forward to. I know I will love doing this one - thanks! 💜💛💚

Kathy Wilden

Love these shells…Can’t wait to paint them and I hope they come out as good as Louise’s.

Nat Ford

Lovely video - I hope to try this one. However, I do miss the accessibility features of YouTube, such as captions, on day like today when my hearing is worse than usual.

Vee

Thanks Louise, these are beautiful and I would like to have a go at them.

jean maloney

Thank you for the shells. Now inspiration and imagination should take over with your guidance.

River

Thank you!!! The progress photos are extremely helpful!

Kay Wolfs

I am an avid collector of shells so thank you for this tutorial Louise. I look forward to applying your wonderful techniques to those from my collection. cheers Kay

BERTA IGLESIAS GALLEGO

Hi Louise! From today i'm a patron on patreon. I love your tutorials on YouTube ❤️ . Here, in Patreon, i can't see captions. I'm spanish speaker, and i'd understand better if I could read what you are saying. Thanks for your teach!!!

Simi

Hey Louise. Patreon is giving me a lot of trouble. When I try to open a tutorial it says I should become a Patron, join a tier. Or the line drawings don’t open. What could be the problem? What can I do to fix it?

Louise De Masi

Hey Simi, Make sure you are trying to sign in using the email and password you used to join with. Sometimes people forget what email they used and they try to sign in with the wrong one. If log in is not a problem it could be the app that is playing up. If you are using the Patreon app try signing into Patreon through your internet browser instead....use Safari, Firefox, Google Chrome etc instead of the app. Let me know how you go. Send me a message rather than a comment here if you can.

Simi

Thank You Louise. I’ll try to open Patreon on Safari

Cindy Roberts

Fabulous, fun tutorial. Thank you!

Monika Tawngdee

I did the first shell last night. It was so much fun. Thank you!

Edith

Hi Louise, I love this tutoral.! tried to paint the first shell but it turned out to be very dark. I think this is my worst problem in this moment. I thought to make the mix of colors and then paint small areas using different amounts of water as you showed in your video before I start to paint , and then let them dry to see the exact color I´ll get in the painting. But all this takes a lot of time. Do you think there´s a shortcut to my problem?

Katie Anagnostos

What colors might you choose for shell #3 if you wanted to paint it true to life? It looked pinkish to me, but in thinking of the pinks I have in my palette I feel they would be too vivid.

Louise De Masi

Hi Katie, When I was painting it I was thinking I'd use Indian Red instead of Burnt Sienna to make it closer to the colour of the shell.

Louise De Masi

Hi Edith, If you tend to put the paint on too dark my advice would be to try out the colour before you use it on the painting - as you said. Paint it on a scrap piece of paper and quickly blast it with the hair dryer. Add more water to your paint if you think it's too dark. Being aware of what you are doing wrong is half the battle. If you can see that you tend to paint it on too dark remember to add some more water to your mixtures. If you put it on too light (with my style of painting) that can be corrected by painting another layer or two. I often put the paint on lighter than I want it without meaning to and then I have to add more layers. I feel safer doing that than putting it on too dark at first.

Edith

Thank you very much for your answer, Louise. I´ll do that :)

Karen Read

I loved the progression of easier to more difficult!

Carrie

Hi Louise, Can you do this without masking fluid? Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Carrie, yes you could. It would be a bit more time consuming because you'd need to be careful to try and paint around the areas that are left white.

Carrie

Thanks, Louise! Would you ever consider doing a drawing tutorial on Patreon?

Louise De Masi

Yes I have been giving that some thought lately. I plan to do some drawing tutorials when I have time.

Carrie

That would be great. I find that I need to practice my drawing. I would pay an additional fee for it too. Thanks Louise!

Geraldine Lucas

Fun one and liked the way it turned out.

Devra

I don’t know what words to use!! I loved the look of this tutorial but i did not think my skill level could do it…. Holy moly… you are such a great instructor.. i did it…. I did it.. and they are so sweet.. thank you .. i feel so good.. i feel so good about painting.. in very big appreciation Louise.

Louise De Masi

Lol....that's fabulous! That's so good Devra and I'm very happy. Thank you for your message. 🥰

Jenny Foreman

Louise these are marvellous. Can I ask what size lead you have in your mechanical pencil please..

Jenny Foreman

Thank you Louise. Have a lovely day..weather is glorious on the Gold Coast

Vicki Falsgraf

I painted the two shells together, and had it sitting on my piano. My youngest daughter said it was her favorite, so I had it framed and gave it to her for her birthday (31st). She's hard to shop for and it made me so happy to paint something she would enjoy. Thank you, Louise, once again, for helping me share beauty with loved ones!

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful. I hope she treasures it. Thank you Vicki.

Diane King

I finally got around to painting the shells. As I usually do, I did the process backwards, painting the hard one first! I watch the video, but I paint it my way and then review how you did it. Actually, I came pretty close on the final product! I learn best by making mistakes! Thanks so much for the tutorials. I have come so far since I started painting with you. You are a great teacher!

Louise De Masi

That's a good way to learn Diane. Thanks so much! 💕

Debbie Maddock

Great tutorial I enjoyed the middle shell the most but pleased with all 3 how they turned out with Louise's fantastic tuition x
