Hi everyone,

Here is the Protea tutorial. In this tutorial I reduced the tonal values on the back of the Protea to try to create the illusion of depth and I used a limited palette of four colours.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below. I took the reference photo a few years ago when we were holidaying in New Zealand. We visited Dunedin and we spent the afternoon wandering around the beautiful Botanic gardens there.

This week I've been voicing over the Lily tutorial and the crab tutorial so I haven't had a chance to pick up my brushes. Hopefully next week I can get some painting done. I have so many subjects I want to paint! I hope everything is ok where you are. We are in lockdown here in NSW so I'm glad I've got plenty of things to keep me busy. I miss seeing my little grandson ☹️.

I've been loving the Galah paintings that you have done. Gorgeous work!

Take care and have fun.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Eleanor

I was just going to ask about that. Thanks for answering my question in advance!

Eleanor

Thanks for the tutorial Louise. I'm looking forward to starting this painting. Are proteas fuzzy? I've never seen one in person.

Linda Chiles

Just joined and did the protea as my first painting. I'm from South Africa and it's our national flower. I'm still a beginner but enjoyed the challenge. Thank you for the very clear instructions

Zoe Lau

Same here. I don't have Viridian and wonder if I can use Winsor Green BS instead. Now you answer my question. Thank you

Fiona Bateman

Hi Louise, I was wondering if you were to redo this painting using a limited palette which colours you’d use? I’m struggling to find Viridian in my local art shop. Would WN permanent rose, transparent yellow and French ultramarine be a good place to start and have a play with the different colours needed?

Louise De Masi

Hi Fiona- yes, you read my mind. That's what I would use if I was to paint it again. I'd throw in some Burnt Sienna as well. You could mix everything you need from them.

Kathy Wilden

Hi Louisa, I am sorry I didn’t realise that the paintings are not to be sold…although I have never sold any paintings….Thank you for clearing this matter. Is it ok to give it as a present? I hope this did not upset you and I just want to say sorry.

Vee

Oh this is sooo beautiful!!! Thank you very much, I am going to give this my best - right now!!! It is South Africa's national flower and definitely worth a try. It is sad that lockdown is keeping you from your little grandson because they grow up so fast. I hope that it will soon be over for you and that you will be able to cuddle your precious little one. Please take care and stay healthy xxx

Louise De Masi

Hi Kathy, yes absolutely you can gift them to people. 💕

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Vee. Have fun with it. You too! 💕

Chantelle Venter

This is GORGEOUS! I haven't painted in a year and am so scared to get started again but I think this one might just give me the motivation I needed :)

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Oooh, lovely colors, this one will be great fun, thanks, Louise!! 💜💛💚 p.s. so sorry you aren't able to see little Logan right now, let's hope this period passes soon! ... Finished watching now, I always watch all the way through once or more before even thinking of painting, just because I find you and your process so entertaining, Louise. Thanks again! 💜

Anita C. Paul

I can't wait to try this one... so beautiful. My Mother-In-Law would love it for her birthday in October.

Eleanor

Beautiful. Are you still using Sarah paper to trace your drawing onto the paper?

Louise De Masi

Thank you Eleanor. I haven't used it for a while. I find scribbling over the back of the line drawing with graphite is a cleaner method so I've been doing that.

Wendy Kelcey

Oh just gorgeous! I’m working on the rose. Where do I post it for you to view? Love your teaching style Louise! 😊

Louise De Masi

Thank you Wendy. I have a private Facebook group where students post their paintings in different albums. You are welcome to join. facebook.com/groups/118323255562001 Unfortunately there is no community page here on Patreon where we can share photos.

Kathy Wilden

It’s so lovely…I want to paint the dark pink rose again this time larger first, then I’ll do the protea

Kathy Wilden

Hi Louise, I haven’t got Viridian but have hooker’s green…will that do or a different green?

Louise De Masi

Hi Kathy, It will look a bit different to mine but I don't think it will matter. Mix some yellow with it and it should be fine.

Kathy Wilden

Hi Louise, I checked for other green and I have Windsor green blue shade and it’s very close to Viridian….just thought I’d let you know in case someone else needs to know the same thing.

Sue Pittel

Thank you for this tutorial! I enjoyed it so much!

Tonya Kortekaas

Loved this tutorial! I just finished my Protea. Do you have a page where we can post our work that we do from your amazing tutorials?

Louise De Masi

That's great Tonya. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have a private Facebook group where patrons/students have made albums of all of the paintings they have completed from the tutorials. facebook.com/groups/118323255562001

Peiying

This was my second tutorial, again an attempt to embark on something much higher level than I thought I was capable of. Thank you Louise for the detailed steps and the tips you shared along. I was quite impressed by the outcome. I was patient to let it dry between each layers. The color was vibrant, yet subtle, partially in focus and partially fuzz up. Nothing was brown and muddy. I love the effect!

Louise De Masi

Wonderful Peiying! I'm so pleased. Patience is always required when you're painting and enjoy the process of it. Sometimes I think we can be in too much of a rush to get it finished. I'm glad you had success.

Olivia Bornman

Hello Louise! When you make use of a hairdryer to dry your paper what setting do you use cold or hot? Sorry I know it's a newbie question!🙈😋

Louise De Masi

Hi Olivia, I use the hot setting. I wait until the paper is cool before I start to paint again. Be careful of not blowing the wet paint all over the paper as well. Leave it to soak in on its own and when it's starting to dry you can finish it off with the hair dryer.
