Hi everyone,

This is the second instalment of our journal exercise videos. In this tutorial we will focus on blending paint colours.

The exercises in this tutorial will help you to create beautiful colour transitions and gradients in your watercolour paintings. It's not easy and it requires lots of practice so have patience.

Kelly Hoche

My journals arrived from The Mighty Ape au website about a week and a half ago. Looking forward to having some time to do your journal exercises. Thank you, Louise!

Linda

This is very helpful, Louise. I’m finding the more I paint, the more I feel I know how much water to leave on my brush in different techniques. Not always successful 🥴. So practising is a big plus. 🥰

Richard Diego Sander

Hi Louise! Thanks for this tutorial. Very interesting and helpful! Have a good day from Canary Islands 🏖

Donna Riggs

Learning so much from your tutorials!

Louise De Masi

That's great Kelly. Did you get a Winsor & Newton journal?

Louise De Masi

I'm glad Linda. It becomes intuitive after a while. You won't need to think about it, you'll know how wet your brush should be.

Kelly Hoche

Yes 😊 I wanted one exactly like yours, lol! I looked online countless times after you posted the first journal exercise. Finally, I decided I had to order it from Australia, because I couldn’t find one anywhere else! Since the shipping was a little pricey (not a surprise because my brother and his family live in NZ) I got two. I confess I haven’t painted in it yet, but hopefully over the weekend.

Monalisa Mackey

Thank you so so much, Louise. You give us so much helpful and beautiful content! 😊💕. Btw, in your recent subscriber email there was a lovely painting of a bat with a turquoise wash through it. Will this be a tutorial? I really like it!

Louise De Masi

Hi Monalisa, Thank you! No (I'm sorry) - I didn't film the graphite bat (other than a small amount of vertical footage that I can turn into a reel for Instagram). It was a fun, experimental, relaxation drawing for me.

Carrie

Hi Louise, how do we access discord? Thanks for your help!

Louise De Masi

Hi Carrie, Dom here. I've sent you a direct message with a link to the Discord instructions as links don't work here. Let me know how you go.

Kara Cox

I'm really enjoying these journal exercises and keep coming back to them between paintings when I have some extra paint on my palette to use up. I look forward to the next one! P.S. Do you plan to redo some of your previous technique tutorials like glazing/dry brush and add them to this journal series? Or should we go through those and put them in our journal anyhow?

Louise De Masi

Hi Kara, I'm glad they are helpful to you. I'll have a brush control journal tutorial ready soon. I would do the older ones in your journal because I won't re do them - I'd just be repeating myself I think. I wish I had thought about doing them in a journal before I started.

Kara Cox

Glad to hear there will be more technique videos! And thank you for taking the time to read and respond to our questions :)

Dianne Heaney

Louise, if you have a link to the Winsor & Newton journal please share. I, like Kelly, could not find it anywhere. All the usual suppliers did not have it.

Marie

Thank you so much for this. I painted the parrot twice and had trouble precisely where you indicated. I was going to suggest that you do videos explaining in detail the techniques you used or the challenging bits. And, here it is. Merci beau coup
