Hello everyone,
Today we celebrate /noclip's 10th Birthday.
I cannot possibly put into words what this means to me, and the gratitude I have to each and everyone one of you for trusting us, and paying us, to do what we do.
I shot three videos trying to express it and realized I needed to write it down because, for once for us, video wasn't the right format. Sadly for you I'm a terrible writer, but I'll do my best. Just read it in an Irish accent. That's essentially the trick that made my career get this far anyway...
First, some thanks to our incredible community - without whom we would clearly not be here.
/noclip's mission is a responsibility I carry every morning I wake up, every tough day of editing, every long flight away from my family, and every time we hit that red button on the camera.
Over the years I've had the chance to meet many of you, and I hope those of you who I've hugged, shook hands with and chatted to could see my sincere gratitude and respect. I've given a decade of my life to this, but you have given your hard earned cash and trust. I've never taken that responsibility lightly.
The Legacy
Through /noclip we've been able to achieve much. We've documented hundreds of games. We've found footage of cancelled titles and brought stories that were dead-on-the-vine back to life. We've documented people and studios who are no longer with us.
Our mission is niche, and humble, but over the past 10 years we've dedicated our time and energy to it every single day. And I hope we've made a small difference to the way people talk about games development and the talented people behind the scenes.
I would like to think we at least achieved that.
I want to give a special thanks to our incredible crew.
None of this would have been possible without the nimble talent, intense intelligence, brutal honesty and fondly-felt comradery of my dear Jeremy Jayne. We hadn't work particularly close while at GameSpot - so how lucky am I to have found not just a talented shooter and editor in him, but the most inspiring comrade I could have possibly hoped for. He has made /noclip what it is in a thousand large and tiny ways.
Frank Howley whose relentless energy and dedication, often in the face of difficult circumstances, is a constant source of inspiration to me. His ability to tackle just about anything our docs have needed over the years is genuinely remarkable. His curiosity about the world and ability to find love in new places is similarly so.
To my wife, daughter and all of my friends and family - who have supported /noclip in a thousand small ways over the years, thank you. You've kept my feet to the ground and contributed to the work in so many selfless ways. I keep my family off-camera (I guess except for my brother Alan below!) so most of their contributions are publicly uncredited. Aside from the occasional fish model or drawing of a dwarf killing a mermaid.
There are so many more to mention I'm sure I'll forget somebody. Esteban Martinez who helped us greatly during my tenure in Maryland. The multi-talented, sweet natured Jesse Guarascia who arguably had more belief in me than I had in myself most of the time. Dan Silverstone who constantly gives us "mates rates" on his insanely in-demand, high-quality motion graphics work and schedule because he believes in /noclip.
The many folks who helped us film, edit, write captions, make art, merch and more over the past decade. It's been a joy and an honor to work alongside you all.
I have nothing but gratitude. And joy looking forward to another ten years. To do that though, we need to get our funding to a healthier spot.
The Reality
It's been a tough few years for us on /noclip and noclip_2 but we believe in the work and I just have to do a better job of showing what we do, why we do it, and asking for support.
We're never going to descend into paid-for videos, in-doc advertising, or any mechanized slop that promises to make our jobs easier (and less involved). We are who are and we believe in the work. If the ship goes down, it'll go down under our terms. But when I look back on our 10 years I feel like my biggest failure is ensuring that we're always able to pay the crew what they deserve.
We've seen so many wonderful YouTube channels, gaming websites, magazines, gaming non-profits and preservation efforts be swallowed by the financial realities we are all experiencing these days. Organizations that have done cool, important, essential work, simply cease to exist seemingly overnight. We ourselves saved some of that video game history from oblivion with mere hours to spare.
To most, given the times we live in, a lot of the coverage of video games is largely unimportant. And I objectively understand that perspective. But my life will always be committed to the celebration of this artform. Which is why making it to ten feels so important. And survival beyond that, even more so.
We started Secret Tape to help offset some of the financial burden on /noclip - and while it allows us to learn a lot and make some really cool documentaries, it has it's own demands and it's hard to call it a success when crew members are still having to move state to deal with the cost of living.
My promise to all of you, and to our crew, is to work even harder to ensure we all gain the financial security to lead us into the next decade and beyond.
That all said. First, Let's Celebrate.
Like any good Irish boy I will confront these material struggles with a party.
For the next month we're going to celebrate what has come, and what is coming. Below is the party plan. A month of cool videos, new docs, returning favorites, patron exclusives, inside videos, new archive tapes, and yes, a plea to keep the mission going.

What's next?
The best obviously. You don't last 10 years without being absolutely, manically confident that you can outlast the mounting obstacles that lie in your path. The real question is how we do better in our second decade than in our first. I think about it constantly, and with your insight and support I know we'll get there.
Here is to /noclip's first decade. The impact we left, no matter how big or small.
And here's to the next ten. Because the mission will never be finished.
My enduring gratitude, respect and love.
Danny
