Peter Pan & Wendy & Another Stupid Live-Action Remake | A Fairy-Dusted Review

For a movie that wants to take you to Neverland, this does not fly

I swear didn't Brenda Chapman make a movie vaguely like this but it replaced Wendy with Alice? I'm stunned another live action remake isn't good....

Justin Monti

The original 1953 animated Peter Pan movie was one of my favorite animated films growing up as a kid, and honestly with this remake, I honestly thought it was just meh, while I don’t think this is one of the worst Disney live action remakes out there, it’s still not that good, while the movie does stay true to the original animated film and it does has some decent acting and I do think some of the ideas are interesting like what they try to do with Peter and Hook in this version and explain their relationship and why Hook hates Peter so much, and there are a couple of things this actually does better than the original like giving Tiger Lilly a more prominent role and actually portraying the natives properly and not making them offensive stereotypes and the diverse cast, the biggest problem is how this pretty much feels rushed and everything goes by so fast, also the visuals are just dull and lifeless especially compared to the animated films which is full of wonder and color, and not to mention the fact of what they tried to do to Hook to try to make him sympathetic, it just ended up as a joke, and it’s unfortunate because I actually do think David Lowery did his best with the material he was given, I actually have to disagree right here and say that I personally really like the Pete’s Dragon remake and if we do count it in the Disney remake camp I consider it one of the best. Overall I honestly think this isn’t the worst Disney live action remake out there and even as a Peter Pan adaptation it’s pretty forgettable, even when you compare it to other Peter Pan adaptations whether it be the good ones like the 1953 movie, Hook or even the 2003 movie, or the bad ones like the live television special, or Pan, I think this is why this is gonna go down as one of the most forgettable Peter Pan adaptations out there. And this is why I feel like I really don’t trust any of the Disney live action remake that would go straight to Disney+, we had Lady and the Tramp which was forgettable, Pinocchio, which was crap and now this which was also forgettable, and this is honestly making me dread the upcoming live action remake of Lilo and Stitch coming to Disney+, if Disney screws that one up, they are gonna be in for a rude awakening.

Given that I have seen this movie, I’m on the same boat as you as I find it to be most forgettable Peter Pan adaptation I ever seen when you compare not just the animated film, but also other adaptations before hand like 2003 film and the terrible Pan movie. My biggest problem is that there is little creativity and fun throughout this movie that ends up feeling boring with lack of the whimsical and wonder that both good bad adaptation has. I mean I’ll give credit some of the acting like Yara Shadihi as Tinkerbell, music score, and some of the visuals were decent but the rest look dull from both the screenplay and direction, to the forgettable characters, to desaturating colors from the cinematography, and to the bland production design as it tries to be realistic. Also again: Why do I want to be watch this when I can go back and watch previous adaptations from before? It feels kinda pointless if not years too late you ask me. And also, is it the worst? No. I mean it looks a little better the Pinocchio remake but that not saying much. I too give it 5/10 and let hope to God that The Little Mermaid, which I’m also not looking forward to see, doesn’t come out as bad and be somewhat just mediocre. Also, it is also a red flag for this movie to have the girl who played Wendy in this film as she is the daughter of Milla Jovovich and Paul W.S. Anderson whom they work together in Resident Evil movies and Monster Hunter? Not trying to say that she did something wrong as she is only kid while wishing her the best of luck in acting career as she decent in Black Widow as young Natasha Romanoff at the beginning of the film but I just wanting to point that out in case you guys didn’t know.

Well, not really surprising that this is another subpar live-action Disney remake. Slightly better than last year’s live-action remake of Pinocchio, but that’s not saying much. And personally, I found the diversity aspect of the Lost Boys kind of irritating and forced. I’ve seen and read many comments that point out that adding some Lost Girls into the mix takes away Wendy’s significant role and purpose in the story as in the original play and other adaptations, Peter takes her to Neverland with the purpose of being a mother to the Lost Boys since they’ve never known what a mother is like or have much memories of their mothers being only infants when they were taken by Peter into Neverland, as well as the significance of the plot point of why there are ONLY boys and no girls there, which is “girls are too smart to fall from their prams”. So it’s a POINTLESS change that misses the important aspects of the original source material. It’s also annoying that they have to make Hook a misunderstood villain, thus watering down another of their iconic villains. Plus,Hook was ALREADY sympathetic and likable in the original while still being a traditional villain, we didn’t need the additional stuff to make him more sympathetic. Sure, the ONLY improvement the remake made is having a less offensive depiction of the Native Americans, but that’s not really enough to justify this remake’s existence. This is another Disney live-action remake that’s just going to be forgotten. The only thing noteworthy that this new adaptation could do is make people nostalgic and appreciative of the 2003 film adaptation, I mean this year does mark the 20th anniversary of the latter and this remake could definitely bring that version back into the mainstream consciousness and help give it more recognition and respect.

Honestly not surprised, although to say... Still better then the recent ones. Like it came as I expect, more like a blockbuster retelling and less of shot copycat. At least I can give credit the director to at least put more effort to make an actual retelling. However that ain't saying much, I only say it a week ago and even I starting to forget some elements, Better thing to say it's almost "Pirates of the Caribbean" trying to be a Disney classic. All is to say Tinker Bell is possibly the best think about it, Following the familiar aspects while adding new into her personality. The score is also something to admire, I was expecting more like a new version of the songs with pop singer singing them, but that didn't happen I think we're better off without them anyway. Overall it's just okay, but not great.

Why should the fact the actress who plays Wendy is the daughter Paul W.S. Anderson be cause for concern? I know Paul W.S. Anderson is the director of the notorious Resident Evil franchise, but is that just the reason for concern? Or is there dark secrets in his relationship with his daughter, like is he abusive to her?

Kenneth Stoddard

To be clear though, I’m not discourage anyone in trying to support this movie of the fact of a child actress alone is in this as I care more about the quality than the names attached to it. I know this film is getting attack online by racist bigots because of the diversity aspect which is uncalled for even though it not a good movie, but I’m worry that the actress name and her background alone would turn off some people would try to attack her given the history of attacking child actors like Jake Lloyd in a big beloved film/ franchise despite doing their job. Which is why I’m hoping for the the best of luck for her in acting career as she didn’t do anything wrong other doing her job.

Is there anyone else not able to open the video? Every time I try clicking on it, it always says “ sorry, this video doesn’t exist.”

Bryce Gundy

Never mind. I found a way on my computer.

Trenton Girone

I don’t know if there’s a way to watch this on my tablet. For now, I’m just happy to be back!

Joshua Copelan

Amen, to that. I still appreciate that 2003 film and the trailer that came from it as well.
