let’s be real, any time any of those anti-woke dick nuggets are calling out Halle Bailey for not being white, they’re not trying to call her woke they’re trying to call her the N-word

Alex Skrapits

Great review dude and 100% agree with you. I enjoyed it fine; still prefer the original more.

Justin Monti

When it comes to this remake, I actually do think this is one of the better Disney live action remakes we’ve gotten, which I know isn’t really saying much given the reputation these remakes have, but at best I think this remake is actually decent, I will agree that the movie doesn’t do the best of adapting the animated film into live action despite it staying true to it, on top of some of the CGI looking absolutely atrocious to look at like with Sebastian, Scuttle and Flounder and the new song aren’t that memorable, seriously after listening to Scuttlebutt I think I owe the song from Kingdom Hearts 2 an apology, and the fact they took out the chef is disappointing. I do think there’s a lot of good to come out of this movie, the updated versions of the original songs, while not as good as the original versions are still good on there own, some of the visuals are impressive and also make the film look very colorful, I do appreciate how they try to improve the love story compared to the original and give it more time to develop, and some of the actors do a very good job, some of the stand out ones are Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula who does a great job capturing the spirit of Pat Carroll and with her rendition of Poor Unfortunate Souls, and definitely the standout being Halle Bailey as Ariel where she does a great job capturing the spirit of the original Ariel and her singing is equally as impressive as her acting, and her rendition of Part of Your World is definitely a highlight of the movie. Overall I do think this is one of the better Disney live action remakes, and while not great, compared to some of the other ones it’s fine. Also thank you for addressing the issue with how you got all these anti woke and right wing influencers acting racist towards this movie because of it having a black Ariel, honestly I am sick and tired of these idiots on the internet acting like this just because they hired a woman of color to play as a character. Honestly anybody who would actually hate this movie and label it as woke because of that reason, those people deserve to be labeled as racist and what they say is absolutely racist and their opinions and beliefs deserve to be silenced, it’s one thing to go and criticize this movie for being a Disney live action remake and the existence of this movie in general considering the reputation these remakes have, that’s fine, but for people who legitimately hate this movie because it has a black Ariel deserves to be labeled as violent criminals. In fact anybody who actually thinks that “forced diversity” or “black washing” are actually things that are problems or things that actually exist, those people are absolutely stupid and their opinions are as absolutely worthless as there beliefs, and they need to be forced to therapy until they learn to act like a normal functioning human being and all of these people deserve to be labeled as racist if they think that and their beliefs deserve to be silenced.

Justin Monti

Ha you should’ve seen what Zaid Magenta said about this movie, he deadass thinks that black washing is actually a thing yeah I think we can officially label him as racist now.

JF the LOLZOR

he also says anyone who has even the tiniest positive thing to say is just “horny for Halle Bailey” …I mean I am a little but that’s just an insane dick move so basically what Zaid Magenta is best at

Justin Monti

At this point he deserves all the hate he’s getting and is nothing but a fucking joke and should be forced to therapy until he stops acting racist and stops acting like a self entitled ass hole

JF the LOLZOR

at this rate if he’s gonna keep bashing movies for casting leads of color and women, why not just label him a grifter? dude’s a massive sexist douche anyway, so he meets the requirements!

Justin Monti

I pretty much label him as a grifter and I’m at the point where I don’t give any fucks anymore and I say just let his reputation crash and burn because of how he thinks everyone else around him is the problem when his behavior is the real problem, seriously if his “hatedom” video ever comes it won’t do anything and he doesn’t scare me.

JF the LOLZOR

he just reminds me of a toddler throwing a temper tantrum about a kid borrowing his toy

Justin Monti

He might as well have the mentality of a freaking 6 year old and seriously for a person who’s supposed to be a brony and watches Friendship is Magic, the messages from that show go right through his thick skull.

Isaacarthy

If that toy is anyone having a different opinion from his own, that’s not very far off the mark

JF the LOLZOR

with that in mind I’m just imagining a LEGO figurine saying “modern Simpsons is good!” and that’s starting the temper tantrum

Justin Monti

Or better yet a toy that says “Disney Star Wars good” and pretty much go on a 45 minute rant of why people of color or women in movies are bad.

JF the LOLZOR

actually, funny story, Zaid actually messaged me on Twitter saying “YOU’RE A SPINELESS CRETIN, DM ME ON DISCORD BITCH” so I replied with “oh oh scary, oh shiver my timbers-SHUT UP MAN”

Justin Monti

Also hi JF I don’t know if you recognize me but you probably remember me from the podcast, I’m under the name jmonti1025

Kenneth Stoddard

I have watch it through IMAX early screening on a Wednesday in a different city before it came out worldwide in a long Memorial Day weekend which I came in with such low expectations after going through bad mediocre remakes with Peter Pan and Wendy and especially Pinocchio and after watching it, it was surprisingly okay. I mean it one of the better Disney remakes, but it not saying much. The most positive things I can give is Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy performances as Ariel and Ursula with performances performances that are trying like the Prince Eric actor and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder despite being barely in the movie, the rendition of the original songs, some colorful moments from it cinematography, some designs like the costumes and make up, and the romance scenes as well that helps makes this experience more tolerable. I can’t the rest in terms of my criticism with this remake like the unnecessary 135 minute runtime, inconsistent visuals especially the animals like Flounder, Scuttles, and Sebastian trying to be too realistic in the veins with the Lion King remake which Disney didn’t learn their lessons from that issue, new songs by Lin Manuel Miranda especially that Scuttlebutt song which I find it to be cringe and one of his worst songs he wrote yet, some lack of heart from story quality and character wise, and dull looking moments from the production design or a dull direction from by Chicago and Mary Poppins Return director Rob Marshall. I say it a mixed bag overall where I don’t think it good nor bad either but hey, I saw it and won’t remember much any time soon. Also, great job in calling out these anti woke racist people such as the conservative YouTubers like Ben Shapiro and The Quartering as they have to express their hate against Halle Bailey all because it is not played by a white actor. Ariel has been played by different people of color throughout the years including Moana herself in the live television special and these people need to shut up with their hate speech because this is just plain wrong and disgusting. When it comes to the box office, given how the remake performed, I don’t think it’ll make a billion dollars this time due to how the original wasn’t all that big when it came out in 1989, lack of nostalgia from international countries, lack of star power compared something like Will Smith and Emma Watson as Genie and Belle in their respective remakes, competition over June such as Spiderverse and Transformers, people waiting to sit out until it comes out on Disney+ if it weren’t for the pandemic, and the reputation that the Disney remakes has become over the years. Sure it’ll do well here in North America thanks to majority of black moviegoers and families, but because how it underperformed internationally on top of a $250 million budget with $140 million marketing, it’ll have a hard time making it money back in it theatrical run unless merchandising helps to recoup it budget back, therefore won’t make a billion dollars this time around.

JF the LOLZOR

oh yeah you’re the guy who single-handedly helped mat reach his charity goal on his Cuphead stream

Isaacarthy

He sent me that exact same thing a few months ago! Damn this guy’s petty

Isaacarthy

Sorry to go off-topic but you mind if (via my alt of course) I DM you something on Twitter? I had something I wanted to mention but I noticed your DMs are off so yeah :/

Hunter O'Laughlin

I’m still optimistic about this film considering the crew do seem like they’re putting in more effort compared to the crew of the other live action remakes, and even if you weren’t a fan of the new songs by Lin Manuel Miranda, I still look forward to hearing them… although I can see why that Scuttlebutt song is annoying. I feel bad for Awkwafina and I just pray she doesn’t get the same backlash those racist trolls gave to Kelly Marie Tran for her performance in The Last Jedi and Moses Ingram for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. She definitely doesn’t deserve it and I think I’ll take inspiration from your speech calling out the racist trolls for hating on Halle Bailey just for her skin color to call out those racist trolls. At least Lin Manuel Miranda is someone who did love the original film, so regardless of how you feel about his new songs, at least he was a good choice to work with Alan Menken and hopefully the two can have future collaborations for original films. And even if it’s her first role, I have hope for Halle Bailey that she can grow as an actress when she gets more opportunity for movie roles.

Trenton Girone

Mat, I don’t know if this is on your end, but during the part where you talk about the voice acting, there’s a flickering test pattern, specifically at around 16:32.

Bryce Gundy

Trying to make the animation from finding Nemo look as realistic as possible like they did with the animals in this movie would definitely ruin my childhood!

Hunter O'Laughlin

Don’t worry, Pixar isn’t going to let Disney remake THEIR films in live action. So they’re pretty much safe.

Bryce Gundy

Good! Because Finding Nemo is my all time favorite child hood movie and where I got my love for the ocean. I also loved Finding Dory just as much as the original.

Lady Tyler Bio Rodriguez

I of course wouldn't say its better then the original but as a remake? Its pretty not bad, Bailey is definitely the best singer out of all the Disney remakes and that heart and soul matters. I wish her the best for a strong career.
