The Monkey King is back with a brand-new movie for western audiences. And in this review, we’ll explore how Netflix’s adaptation of Journey to the West is also possibly the weakest version of the Monkey King.

I remember learning about the monkey king in my 8th grade English class. I’ve had some great memories with learning about the Chinese story. Not to mention that I am also very in to Chinese and Japanese theming. It’s honestly quite a shame that this adaptation of the story turned out to be not worth watching.

While I myself have heard about the Monkey King, I don’t really know much about the character himself, I honestly had no interest in watching this movie and after watching this review I don’t think I’m missing much. I think the biggest issue is that while there are some interesting ideas and some solid animation, it still ends up having a weak story that doesn’t do justice to the story of the Monkey King and characters that are just flat out mean spirited, so overall I’m definitely going to give this movie a pass. It’s kinda unfortunate because this could’ve had some potential, but this is definitely going to be remembered as one of the weakest adaptations of the story.

I know little about the Monkey King in terms of Chinese mythology, but the ones that got me familiar with this character are The Forbidden Kingdom with Jackie Chan and Jet Li and American Born Chinese that is out on Disney+. Those are the ones that I can think of in terms of getting to know that character which by the way I recommend watching those ones instead. For this movie, this was a painful experience to go through from the story, writing, tone, characters, and comedy. While I’ll give that the animation, some of the voice acting, and some action scenes try to help balancing out, they’re not enough to make me wanted to watch this movie again. Again, this movie could’ve been fun of seeing the Monkey King going on adventure in this origin story, but unfortunately it didn’t. By the way I checked who wrote this script and turns, they’re same writers that wrote movies like Chicken Little and Open Season, which explains why the tone in this movie is so mean spirited featuring unlikable characters is because writers of this movie did it already with those movies I mentioned and they didn’t improve one bit since then. I do blame the directing as well because the director of this film is again also involved with Open Season even though he had made one good film of his entire career and that is The Boxtrolls for Laika although that is considered one of Laika’s weaker films so that can also explain a lot too. I feel like this adaptation of the Monkey King would’ve been better off if they didn’t bring the Open Season people as it had great ideas to make this one of the best memorable adaptations of that character with different people to choose of. Unfortunately, they went with these guys and probably never want to check out this version again.

Now that you mention that info, the mean-spirited tone does make sense and when I think about it, does remind me of Chicken Little. I’m surprised those writers never worked on Eight Crazy Nights because that’s another animated film with a mean-spirited tone that I can see them writing.

I’m not that familiar with The Monkey King legend, other than the legend was going to be the maguffin of the third Indiana Jones film back in the 80s before it was switched out with the Holy Grail (True story. Look it up.), but this film doesn’t get me intrigued to check this film out. And I this is nothing new since this has come to be expected with today’s mainstream animated films, but it’s a shame such good-looking animation, in addition to cool action scenes, have to be wasted by this film! Really feels disappointing that all the hard work of the animation studios went to waste with a film that has a terrible script and mean-spirited tone!

There was an absurdly silly AMC show called Into the Badlands that was a loose Journey to the West adaptation. It was still better then this.
