Hi folks,

Here we go, finally. Hope you enjoy! Let me know if you have any feedback.

The next release will either finish off Book 5 or get us pretty close to it, so I suspect it's going to take extra effort to wrangle. Since it's already November 10th, I'd guess the next release won't be until January.

WAHOO!

Ricardo Miguel Pereira da Silva

Who was the 2nd man killed along side Tomman? That being said.... please oh please i think we would all realy like a christmas present.... please!

ivyveritas

The other guy who died was one of Royal Guards, currently assigned as one of Rusol's bodyguards. Like the other royal guards who worked closely with the family, he's been under heavy compulsion since Marten's time. He never got assigned a name in the story. As for getting the chapters out by Christmas, I just don't see how it could happen. I'm going to need a two-week break to recover from this batch before I can even start thinking about it, and the next batch is going to be more complicated. Think of it as a "shortly into the new year present" instead ;-)

Great build up - roll on the next instalment!

I really like these chapters, well worth the wait. As far as the part that gave you issues my guess would be Yassi and her parents. I do have a few questions if the answers won't endanger any future plot secrets: 1) Can Razai detect Blessed Priests, or does she shy away from priests in general since it is hard to tell Blessed from Unblessed if they aren't using the Blessings? Basically, I know Sarette was assuming Blessed Priests were sent, but I was unsure if Rusol would allow that given the existence of Demonically Compelled Troops as that would be quite a risk to his own hide. 2) What is the current where abouts of Ser Jesson? If Ser Loris was keeping the knowledge of the impending attack from the Dragonslayer Knights, it strikes me that Ser Jesson being Corec's Family and that Corec had been his squire that he would have been a bigger security risk. 3) Did Priest Calwell jump at the chance to accompany the knights from Fort Northwatch to go after Corec given their past history? 4) Did Priest Tibon march with the army? 5) When Ellerie visited Terevas the first time after Melithar brought her word of her mother dying, she encountered one of the Guards named Alarein who had been part of her personal guard before she left. Did Alarien join her new Guard and if so, is he one of the Officers? 6) When Ser Kevik mentions that 300 Knights from Fort Hightower would leave it undefended, was he counting the 100 Knights that Rusol had sent from Telfort to Fort Hightower as reinforcements in case the Dragon attacked? 7) Did losing 100 Knights similarly deplete Fort Northwatch? Asking for someone else. (Ephrenia) 8) Did Captain Tark seriously have to assign guards to watch out for Toman getting booze? Or is that some baloney he told Rusol? 9) Is Branth now Ansel's heir or would he just be the Steward looking over things until Toman's son becomes of age if something were to happen to Ansel? 10) It seems that Rusol can control hundreds of people with his Demonic Magic. It that normal or is this Rusol's Warden Gift? Thanks again for the great set of chapters.

Thanks for the fabulous chapter. I can't wait to purchase this entire series. Do you know if you will also be turning them into audio books?

1. Razai can detect blessed priests. I think we first learn that in Book 3. Some of them, but not all, can detect her. It was Corec rather than Sarette who assumed there'd be priests, due to his knowledge of Larso and the Order of Pallisur--the god of war. Rusol limited the numbers to weaker priests or those who were already under his compulsion, to prevent them from saying anything about the hundred compelled knights. 2. Sir Jesson's a bit too old to be going off to war. He fought in the North Border War, which I think ended 28 years ago at this point? Unofficially (in that I haven't written it down anywhere yet), I think Georg graduated during the war and fought in it around the age of 17/18, putting him at 46 now, and he's also ready to retire from active duty. Jesson's older than he is. As for how Jesson feels about the knights going after Corec, we'll just have to see ... Note that Corec was never a squire. Sons of the peerage have free entry into the knighthood. And Trentin's father bought him a place. Of the three, Kevik was the only "scholarship kid", working as a page and then a squire in the hope of obtaining a better life for himself. Georg was probably a squire too, now that I think about it. 3. Calwell's a coward and a pencil pusher, not a trained fighter, and he knows Corec has it out for him. If he's with the army, it's not by choice. 4. No, Tibon's too old and another pencil pusher. 5. Alarein commands Ellerie's personal guard. She asked for him herself--a bit of a symbolic gesture to make up for never spending much time thinking about the servants and soldiers who worked for her family while she was growing up. 6. No, for the short period Kevik was back in Hightower, he was too distracted by his trial to pay attention to stuff like that. That said, when Trentin pointed it out, he should have said "men" rather than "soldiers". I thought they kept the extra soldiers and knights, but Rusol only mentions holding back the knights. If there's another scene where they keep back soldiers too, I don't remember where it happened. 7. Fort Northtower and Fort Hightower each have about four hundred members of the Order, though many are out on patrol at any given time. The four hundred includes priests, trainee knights, and knights who are too old to fight but haven't retired yet (usually in administrative positions). That leaves about three hundred active duty knights in each location (plus another three hundred, or maybe more, at the Telfort tower). So losing three hundred would weaken Hightower quite a bit. Losing one hundred wouldn't be quite so bad for Northtower, except they also lost 2000 mercenaries who'd been reinforcing the entire northern border (not just the fort). 8. Less "assign" and more "make sure that idiot doesn't sneak down to the bar tonight; he's supposed to talk to the king tomorrow". 9. Branth is still Ansel's steward of the lands. Toman's son becomes heir to Tarwen (he was already heir to Tammerly). If Ansel dies before Toman's son comes of age, Vena decides who'd be making the decisions until then, which might mean Branth is still just steward of the lands or she might make him an overall steward of the barony (but she might prefer Tammerly's steward for that role). She'd have to make the same decision in Tammerly barony if her own father dies while her son is still young (if Toman was still alive, he'd have become that person by default until his son was old enough). 10. Yes, compulsion is Rusol's warden gift.

I might take a short break between Books 5 and 6 to get more of the books edited and published. As for audio books, I don't know if there's a cheap way to get a good-sounding audio book, and I can't afford an expensive option. I don't like how AI readers sound, but real readers ... I don't think they come cheap. If anyone's looked into it, let me know.

Jesse

Thank You the Answers. 3) Having to walk/ride through the weather and wilderness that Sarette and Shavala have put up knowing he is headed towards the man whose mother he failed... 6) I wasn't sure if Kevik had noticed or not. I wasn't sure if that had been factored into his estimates. 8) When Rusol's vision goes red does his eyes also go red and Toman noticed? Or did the conversation just go in a fashion that made Toman realize Corec was right after all. And for once I agree with Captain Tark. Should have sent those men to arrest Ansel. Toman knew your secret, you can bet on Ansel knowing too. And you just killed his son...

8. Rusol's eyes don't turn red, but Toman's willing to believe Corec, especially once he realizes Rusol intends to kill Corec.

No wories! Hope you had a happy new yera and a mery xmas. Sory was too busy working to say somwthing earlier! That goes to every one

Aspiring Sage

Hey Ivy, as we approach Feb, I just wanted to check in to see if you might have a more accurate estimate at this time. Looking forward to the rest of your epic.

ivyveritas

I'm going to try as hard as I can to finish the first draft by the end of the month, and then I need six days for edits and beta review, which would put the release late on Feb 6 my time (Feb 7 for most people). If that schedule slips again, I'll post another reply here.

ivyveritas

Third draft is done, but I'm running two days behind my most recent estimate. Instead of posting on Feb 6th/7th, it'll be Feb 8th/9th (provided the beta readers don't find any glaring issues).
