There we go, hair bird is the First Soul. I don't think it'll swell Sette's ego too much, she doesn't really like it, and most of the side effects it's saddled her with all her life have been a bother.

"Soul" is such a fuzzy word and I think it's going to confuse people. Basically, everything in the world has a khert soul. It's their personal section of the khert that defines their Aspects, their identity, enables them to function in the world. What the Man wanted was the Gefendur religious idea of a soul, one that enables reincarnation and promises the return of all of ones memories one day. He wanted the gods, he wanted eternity, he wanted rewards, and his idea of hope. That's what he had in mind when he and Sessine created this "First Soul." He didn't want the cold functionality of the khert; he wanted story, meaning, hope, and transcendence. It's kinda uh, unexpected, that Sette Frummagem wound up the final current living embodiment of all of uh, that.

"He wanted story, meaning, hope, and transcendence" but all his dreams slammed into a big old brick wall called Childhood in Sharteshane.

Unexpected… to who, I wonder?

Stillpoint

No, no, I'd say Sette Frummagem is pretty damningly representitive of the world-as-is.

The Clag

This is so horrifying and I can't figure out why. So her soul is like a first material? Is this why she's a shaper of memories? Can she directly damage or destroy another khert soul? I have so many questions and I don't think any of them are the right one.

Most remarkable of all in this tale is what is not remarked upon at all: the lions.

The intentional omittance of the Man's name, the Father's identity, and labeling Sette as child of the king, also leads me to think there's going to be a small twist at the end. Rortide, perhaps?

CD

So many Settes... And each Sette is formed by turning the First Soul out into the world? But even though the memories are 'preserved', they decouple from the ghost in death? Am I even remotely following along correctly? 😭 Have mercy. The grey meat is small.

A lot revealed but it's adding more questions to the pile for me! I know more answers are coming, but I can't help wondering what the grand scheme is that Sette fits into. If she's just the latest iteration in a series of failures, then why work all these angles from the shadows to lead her here? I know she's "supposed" to die by age 12, but the khert isn't coming apart of anything without her. What's the harm in letting her continue to live her life as an immortal Frummagem? And how the hell does the silver fit into this picture? Is it to give Tirnasette an invincible body so she can be unkillable and immortal with all her past memories? I'm sure I'm missing bits and pieces that will fall into place soon. Guess we'll find out!

Lady Ilganyag, the omission of how Jac fits into this picture is loud. Also, Ashley- I must know, is her smallest finger hard and sharp or flexible?

CD

Aw and this opens up even more parallels with Duane too 🥺 Poor lil messed up souls.

Loving the lore dump! Wondering why was the cruelty such a crucial factor to Sette's dad... why did he want his children to suffer...

Butterfree/Dragonfree/antialiasis

Hmm. Bastion was experimenting with getting the memories to remain past death, at Ilganyag’s behest, while the problem with Sette’s soul is that the memories still decouple on death… Starting to sound like Sette and Duane are both guinea pigs in the same ongoing experiment.

Renee

Kinda funny that Sette gets the name that means child of the king when Jac just gets to be named after flowers

Nikaleles

shame duane is too busy souding the great unsouded to be present for storytime

I don't know if there's a better term, but perhaps it would help to distinguish between "soul" and "mind" – Dark Goblin Sette once had the soul that Cool Thief Princess Sette has but they clearly have different minds Or maybe, to continue with the video game and computer programming analogies that the comic all but begs for, we could say that the soul is the information in the files of a program but the mind/body is each instance of the program. Ooh! Or we might say that the soul is the main character for a game but each individual mind bearing the soul is the player. Dark Goblin Sette is basically saying "you're playing Unsounded too long, it's someone else's turn, jackwad."

They wanted a ctrl+s option for MS Life docs, but instead got an even glitchier, thieving Clippy Or souls are a floppy disc, but the hard drive is so fragmented, everything corrupts instantly. 404 Life Not Found #DefragTheKhert

Now I can't say I'm a big fan of the implied paradox but surely this pantsless man in the Khert's past must be Magnus!

Flyfly

"Your Duane" Heh.

The simplified drawings of the "First Soul" remind me of Philomena the phoenix from MLP.
