A new uncle appears! This one is surely the uncle Mikaila mentioned earlier, the one waiting for her return with grandmother in a nearby bankhouse, and the one the old lady in the crowd had her charges go and fetch in a hurry. From Will's expression, we can assume he is kind and forgiving.

Guiscard has the look of a man who has been angrily muttering to himself since he started walking in that direction. Also that of a man who probably has a dog with the exact same haircut.

I detect an undertone of ‘pray, step out of the blast radius’…

…why did Nora give Duane boogers? Has science gone too far?

Fitzy

Not "Oh my goodness is my niece alright!?" but "We're sorry now please stop tending to her" oooooh boy

Alight

(Why’s the doctor’s hand in her mouth? Checking for broken teeth?) If we recall how Duane describes his own father, we can easily infer the sort of gentle kindness the presenting uncle is likely to give. (Wait- where in the family tree is this guy?)

PotentPinion

Aww panel 7 Vlad looks so concerned!

On Leysa’s side is the family, either her brother or brother-in-law

Ashley

That is one of Leysa's brothers. Doc's checking her teeth, yep.

Flyfly

Okay TBH this particular scenario kinda does warrant the angry muttering, that was absolutely insane of her Like if I were her well-intentioned protector I think I still would be absolutely furious about this stunt, among all the feelings of worry and concern for her ( doesn't seem like he is that, of course - he isn't starting this with concern for her at all )

Rob N

I think Duane himself did that - his head (up to and including the gadget Bastion implanted in his spine) is still his own, and IIRC he had some kind of "artificial saliva generator" installed so he could still speak.

That's just a patriarch from patriarchal Alderode for you...

I hope Duane gets to escape in a cool-if-a-bit-silly way (general mayhem, pies thrown all around) and Nora is reduced to a team rocket-like villain chasing after him. In the last scene we see her about halfway through the book she slips in mud and a cartful of manure lands on top of her.

Meanwhile, in the cupboard, Lillelord enters rigor mortis.
