"Inherit the ash," eh? I don't think Duane's getting any ash though. I don't think he wants anything to do with anything she's talking about. But that could very well be because he thinks he saw what this is leading to - kaiju Silver stomping his hometown to smithereens - and the only way to win that game is not to play.

(early post tonight! 🙏) This is fascinating. I had no clue Sonorie was ramping up towards even some kind of request of him, much less "flying the banner" (whatever that is code for), and I'm a little surprised Duane recognized it as well. Surely this'll all make a lot more sense when we have the full scene, and I'm far from hatin' it. Honestly this just got so much juicier.

Michael Stakely

The only thing that could be worse for Duane right now than that crippling dread about the total destruction of all Alderode is the terrifying possibility that she might be right about being the only path to save any of it.

Rifter

Nora continues to infuriate me to no end. And disobeying her Queen for more petty torture. I hope Sonorie ejects her from the meeting, though that might be too wishful. Great character, but oh man do I love to hate her! Duane may not want to play the game, but this plan likely involves a lot of his people dying, and the endangerment of his family. I know he's trying to sort out his feelings and kinda vowed to move on for now and focus on Sette, but he's just a human man with human emotions in the end. Still waiting for someone to mention to him that they've got a soud vliegeng pilot as a POW...

Ashley

Nora's just about eaten through her Majesty's good graces, don't worry. You don't outright defy a royal order in front of other people and expect no consequences.

astine

She's going to use Lemuel as leverage, isn't she? That's why Duane can't refuse.

Rifter

I think that was the reason for Duane's silence that Nora so quickly misread as him being defiant.

Ashley

Nah, Lemuel actually never comes up in this interaction :)

Rifter

Oh dang, interesting! I was waiting for some kind of throwaway line or something to tip Duane off that Lem is here. I figure there's no way he just rots in Cresce prison for all of Red Cost, so he's gotta be spring somehow. I'm sure there's a mystery option I'm not expecting though 🤔

Khyrberos

I just thought she was pounding the console in anger; didn't look like she actually hit the Torture Nexus button (but likely you are correct)

Khyrberos

OK now I've reread this whole scene from the beginning & indeed I was just missing the subtleties; she starts by talking about Copper's being the chink in the armor then transitions to Golds & some of her plans, so it more or less tracks. Still not super-obvious but hey, that's part of why I respect this comic so much. Now I'm freshly confused by her question on panel 4; surely she wouldn't be suggesting to a Ssaelit the destruction of his own faith, that would be a non-starter. And Duane certainly doesn't think so; his response (& meaningfully, his pause) indicates he knows she's talking about the Gefendur Aldish. But like WHAT??? Surely the Queen isn't suggesting they kill off all the Gefendur?? Those are her people (religiously speaking (ok well sorta, fraternal vs. sororal, but still))! That's wild! I'm sure we'll see more of what she means on Monday (eurughgh the interminable weekend wait 😩) but consider my flabbers gasted.

Ashley

She's largely trying to prompt him into a conversation. She really doesn't expect him to suggest mass slaughter of anyone like that; rather she's inviting his input with an extreme suggestion. He mostly stays reserved though. He's stonewalling her. Then she gets mad at this and calls him blind, confined (and kinda useless). Talk to her, Duane!

Alight

“All Aldishmen are precious to me”, he said, with a close-up to his stolen (unconsented) face.

Khyrberos

Fair enough! I think that's ultimately the question floating around in my skull; "why would the Queen of Cresce deign to chat with Duane Adelier?" I mean sure, it could just be an excuse to visit Nora & check in on her work, and maybe she wanted to thank him personally for his help against the Silver... or even just some idle curiosity ("conversation")? But that seems a thin thread of motivation. And obviously we're finding out, but I think that is still somewhat foggy. Can't wait for the rest.

corvicore

does Sonorie refer to herself as a bitch-queen because she knows Duane has called her this, or is it a common insult levied towards her ? either way, it's smart self-deprication on her end, shows Duane she is well aware of her detractors criticisms :^)

We're all eager to see what Lem and his huge hog are up to, but all in due time.

😬

Hmm.... Queenie, I appreciate the promise of foreign intervention(people love being promised that a neighbouring superpower will infiltrate your country and shape it to fit their vision), but you have to be working with the existing Aldish elites if you are to manipulate and mold Aderode to some stability after the inevitable civil war and rebellions. What's a dead memory of man have to offer to you?

Flyfly

You know, funnily enough Lemuel probably would agree to this offer. He doesn't seem to mind doing a deal with the devil nor sacrificing half a country to save Soud and Ssaelit.

Chantal Fournier

I was thinking at first that she would favor getting rid of the ssaelit too, but what she said makes sense too, if she can't pervert the damalhert to her goals, maybe she needs to preserve the people who don't obey the damakhert. The aldish gefendur share the same religion only by name, they worship the male twins and are as bigoted as the ssaelit. The Roger plot wasn't her idea.... imagine having to go along a plan like that for this long.

McCord Hall

I'm guessing since pymary still ultimately obeys the laws of physics as we understand them that her retinas at least would still need to have their opacity for her to not go blind if she wanted to be invisible. Side thought, I wonder if Kasslinians (Kasslynians?) even know what a retina is. Thinking out loud I guess they'd at least know it as "the part of the eye that must be opaque for us to see" if nothing more. Pymaric science is so interesting!

McCord Hall

What quote? I hate to miss something. Also lmao at Rion "Boom Crabhands" Keon

Ashley

Aldishmen commonly call her a bitch :)

Ashley

Nothing, honestly. She just wants to talk to a Soud and get his insight on that caste. And one other thing. She's already got her Aldish connections, we saw their ship in the harbour at the end of the first book.

Ashley

Pretty much~ Could also be swapping with the falling rain, a trick her dad did long ago.

Khyrberos

Well preserving the Soud isn't the same as preserving the Saaelit, exactly; there are some (few) Gefendur Soud (Tree's companion being one!) & many non-Soud Saaelit. 🤔

Khyrberos

Ah now *that* makes sense

McCord Hall

Sorry I'm unfamiliar with Wiktionary is it indicated on the page you linked that she is theorized to have coined this phrase?

Malik M.L. Williams

Um… for my colorblind benefit, who is “she” and where are we talking about? Please and thank you.

Malik M.L. Williams

Interesting that I just *assumed* Nora had hit the button. Doesn’t actually show that as fact yet, though… 😬

PotentPinion

Ah no problem: Mikkie was walking through the last page and this page glowing green, and that last panel she appears in (panel 5) has her fading back to full color. I had assumed based on the previous page that it was showing her non-literally (like, her "spirit" lost in an escalating violence where she's vulnerable but not allowed to self determine her own survival in it or something?), but this page reveals that she was literally using pymary to walk around unseen. Not that there wasn't some symbolism going on there (and someone could phrase it better than me for sure).

Rifter

Yeah I did too. It's hard to tell if it's that part of the console now that I think about it though, so she might just be pounding a random spot anger, not hitting the button. I bet we find out tonight!

Malik M.L. Williams

Ah! Thank you. I saw her, but didn’t see the green 😆
